Removed the entry for Notes on a Fridge, the website has died and the domain gone to hell. Original entry preserved below.

Notes on a Fridge (on a spaceship) Vol. 1, Vol. 2 & Vol. 3 by Arwen Bijker

  • Recommended by Pistis Sophia, seconded by JET73L.
  • Synopsis: A fancomic depicting notes on the fridge on the Serenity.
  • Comments: River's notes in particular are very disturbing/amusing. A very funny read.
    • JET73L: The Call Backs and running gags are wonderful, and the author gives great voice to each of the characters. The final installment (as of this writing), the "Chinese New Year" gift exchange tickets at the end of Volume 3, are a must-read. While they don't require the continuity of the previous installments, and are a Crowning Moment Of Heartwarming (and a funny moment) for fans of the series and movie who haven't read any of the others, the entire series is well worth reading for anyone who has business being on the Firefly Fanfic Recs page in the first place.

Browncoat, Green Eyes: Not sure about the recommendation. Harry seems too much of a Mary Sue, he seems to be able to do just about everything, he can fight anybody, help River's mind, cure someone who's ill whom Simon can't and doesn't have any real setbacks. He even manages to make Mal rich. There doesn't seem to be much that goes wrong. I feel its more 'Harry Potter curing the ills of the 26th Century' than living a life on the edge only just managing to be still flying. The storytelling is okay, but its not amazing and doesn't want me to see what happens next. However, I'm not doing anything on the page due to the Rule Of Cautious Editing.

You might want to post that as a review if you really want to get your feelings heard.

Changed: "Do warn when a fanfic may head into homosexual or non-canon territory. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business."

To: "Do warn when a fanfic may head into non-canon territory, and for shipping fics, please list the pairings involved - as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business."

Warning for slash and not het is offensive - and I don't think either are necessary as long as the pairing is stated.

That's the standard top-of-page warning for Fan Fic Recommendations. I don't really see what's so offensive about noting that some folks don't like slash, either - I mean, I'm fine with slashfics existing, but that doesn't stop them from being a niche interest that not everyone enjoys reading.

Also, the issue with listing pairings and not whether there is slash is that it doesn't tell us which of the pairings is explored in particular detail. See, the difference between 'Pairings: Mal/River, Simon/Jayne, lemon' and 'Pairings: Mal/River, Simon/Jayne, lemon, slash' is that one implies that yes, we're going to get intimate detail of Jayne and Simon boinking, whilst the other leaves it more ambiguous. Meanwhile, a note of 'mild, occasional slash' tells us that the boys are probably going to be restricted to kissing and references to off-screen sex whilst Mal and River get inventively freaky all over the ship. Given that, let's face it, a majority of people read lemons to get their rocks off, and different people are going to be turned on by different pairings and orientations, it's useful for them to have as much detail as possible about whose sexytimes they're going to be reading about. You follow?

Given that this is such a common warning on the recs pages, though, changing it wholesale would be a big deal, and that means you probably want to Take It To The Forums where we can have a more general discussion.
