Find a Trope:
openA certain kind of inconsistent translation Anime
SPYĂ—FAMILY has a character that is only known by their title, referred to by this wiki as the "SSS Lieutenant." However, this title is inconsistently translated in official translations: while the anime's subtitling and dub calls him "First Lieutenant," which is a military rank in both the US and the Commonwealth for the IJA rank of Chuu'i in the original, the manga's official translation makes him a "Captain," partly due to length, and also presumably questioning how likely a First Lieutenant gets to be the commanding officer of a Second Lieutenant.
I don't think this counts as Inconsistent Spelling. But what does that count as?
openObscured face of someone hanging Anime
I often see this in many different Japanese media, where the face or upper body of someone who hanged themselves is obscured from the audience. Is there a trope for this?
openCharacter's subtitle appearing in big bold text Anime
(The hero appears) Text appears behind him, in large letters SAVIOR OF THE SOUL AND SKY
(Antagonist rises from his throne to fight him) Once again, the same text, but could be a different font, color and styling as an artistic choice END OF ALL MANKIND
Is there a trope for that kind of thing?
openStore Owner's Pet Anime
Pops out frequently when the characters come to a store. The pet would likely bark/meow/quack/anything-that-still-animal-sound towards the character, either giving a sign of hostility or hospitality. It almost always the first greeting the customers before the store owner realize there's a customer.
It usually shows up in school-life comedy anime, involving the pet being missing or attacking the characters.
openAnime White Crack Background Effect Anime
It's an animation technique usually found in anime in which the background of a character is completely black and a white flash that looks like it's breaking the screen in two flashes by. It's done to indicate shock and/or surprise, but in a comedic way, not a serious one. This is the only example I have off the top of my head (the last panel):
openI like girls but I’m still straight Anime
You know when a girl in a show who likes women and talks about her love for women and there body’s but still bring up she wants to date men despite showing no interest in men?
openThe mask is there, but not drawn Anime
So the manga Shuukan Shounen Hachi has this girl who's constantly wearing a panda mask around people because she's too shy to show her face. But sometimes the author draws her without the mask so that we can see her expressions − even though she's actually still wearing it. What trope would that fall into?
openBoobs Cross The Finish Line Anime
Girl with bigger boobs cross the finish line first with their "protruding endowment".
openBarefoot Ninja Trope? Anime
Is there a trope for it? 'cuz it's pretty common in anime and especially fighting games.
openHigh school Superstition about love Anime
It's something that pops up a lot in romance anime and visual novels. It's a superstition among teenagers that if you do X with somebody, you're going to end up with them. Variations I've seen include holding hands during fireworks, confessing your love at a certain place or time, and in a non-school example sharing a particular fruit.
openThen... I'm Going With You! Anime
This happens often in shounen (shonen) anime, but also happens in western TV dramas and movies (I'm thinking maybe Fast and Furious). One character in the protagonist group is initially against the idea of going on a particularly risky mission, but it's the only way (or perhaps not). In the last moments, he or she declares that if everyone is set on going then, "I'm going with you!"
openEveryone;s granddad Anime
There is a person who was so, er, virile that most of the people in a certain circle are actually his (or her) descendants. Is there a name for this trope?
openCompetition for a Wish Anime
Maybe this one is too broad, but some sort of (generally battle royale-ish) competition where the prize is a wish? Mostly thinking of anime / Japanese works like Fate, but I'm pretty sure there's others.
openMagnificent Armor...in the wrong hands Anime
There's a scene in Konosuba season 2 where the protagonist commisions a grand suit of armor, puts it on, but discovers that the armor is completely useless since he can't so much as properly exit through the door because of its weight compared to his strength, played for comedic purpose. Is there a trope for when someone is given a mighty tool or weapon, whether it be armor or anything else, but it's discovered to be useless for that person in particular?
openForgotten Insobriety-Based OCC Anime
Is there a trope for when a character is either sick (e.g. a high fever) or not sober and they act out and typically have some plot-related progress only to forget it once they recover?
openCharacter meets (voice) actor Anime
A character meets their own actor or, for animation, voice actor. Happens off-screen in Lucky Star, where Konata is an outright fan of Aya Hirano. Happens on-screen in Excel Saga. The character may be aware of the connection or may simply know the actor for other work.
Is there a trope for it? Other than "Celebrity Paradox averted" which is how it's handled for Last Action Hero.
openIssei hyodo Anime
Issei is a highschool, perverted guy with a power of the red dragon emperor
openCensor water? Anime
In numerous anime, the surface of water is used as an effective censor for nudity. This is also sometimes used to tone down nudity in live action film, e.g. the brief swimming scene from Ohlahoma!.
In reality, the tendency of water to reflect and refract can significantly conceal things below the water line, hence the existence of live action examples. In anime (at least, the ones that I usually watch where fanservice is kept low key), this is usually exaggerated by some combination of art style, lighting, and viewpoint, rendering the portion of the character underwater a faint silhouette or entirely invisible, probably for some combination of better censorship and easier animation.
While we frequently see a ring of froth immediately around an animated character at the water line, this isn't soap or bubbles (I am not aware of any examples in a western bath, where soap bubbles are usually used - in live action, it's a pond; in anime, it's an onsen or ofuro; in all cases, people are soaking or swimming, not washing) and in any case isn't necessarily effectively placed to itself conceal (usually) nipples. Therefore, this is not censor suds. Similarly, steam is not typically present, so it is not censor steam.
So what is it?
Title self explanatory, usually a shot of the cast one by one either falling out of the sky or just moving in a forward trajectory in the sky with no ground beneath them
