Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
It does sound at first glance like the whole "a woman works until she gets married" deal which you see often enough in Japanese culture and less so here. So on that basis I'd say it's a valid entry. Is there any kind of Values Dissonance cleanup thread that this can be taken to? If not there's always the Is This an Example? Thread or a Tales of Graces/General Tales thread, if there is one.
Regardless, whether it be through forums, discussion on the page itself or with the troper directly, try to make sure there's some kind of consensus before considering re-adding it.
Edited by sgamer82I didn't see a "Values Dissonance" cleanup thread. I remembered right after I posted this that there is a Tales Series thread but posted here first because of edit reasons and stuff. I'll post there and see what comes up.
In the meantime, I sent Dr. Peace a rudeness notifier.
135 - 169 - 273 - 191 - 188 - 230 - 300I... dont know what to say. I feel that yes, there may be some values dissonance...but I kind of agree that its weird to want the party to object it. Like, if the party doesnt scream that its wrong its a terrible thing and Values Dissonance?
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.I posted in the Tales series thread.
I was under the impression that Values Dissonance trope is more often used for out-of-universe audience reactions. In-universe, I don't remember any deep commentary about gender roles or society at all. The minor NPC is part of the Amarcians, which is not analogous to Japan. Furthermore, the main party was under the impression that the Amarcians were a race where they're more of a group of people who work with technology and science.
Edited by apathetictalesI think Values Dissonance is a weird fit, this is definitely something I've seen in works outside of Japan, hell we have a trope for it. Maybe Unfortunate Implications citing Stay in the Kitchen would be a better fit?
Edited by BlackMage43Isnt Stay in the Kitchen more when a character spouses that in a blatantly and aggresively sexist way?
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.I don't think it needs to be blatant or aggressive, just expressing the belief that a woman's place is at home. Since in this case, it's just the narrative that's implying it, and not the NPC or NPC's husband, I though it would fit Unfortunate Implications better than a straight Stay in the Kitchen example.
Edited by BlackMage43Unfortunate Implications needs genuine off-wiki verification.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.Yeah, that's the main reason why it couldn't go to Unfortunate Implications. No one besides Tumblr users would write about a niche JRPG. A troper on the Tales thread agreed that the entry should stay in Values Dissonance since the game was made in Japan.
Dr Peace deleted a "Values Dissonnace" entry in YMMV/Tales of Graces with a harsh edit reason. I sent the standard "deleting YMMV" PM. I got a response PM back saying that entry was drivel and used a strawman to justify the reason.
The deleted entry stated that it was odd from a Western perspective that a leading researcher would decide to retire to become a housewife as soon as she got engaged to another man. The character is a minor NPC that helps the party in the main quest. I don't remember if the sidequest happened in the main story or the post story, but I do not agree with deleting the entry. The NPC works for a Russia-like country that continuously has energy problems and possible food shortages, and the people are starving and cold. The whole world was close to dying because the Big Bad was stealing all the world's energy.
How do these YMMV deletions get solved? Like I said earlier, I'd rather keep the entry but it's unclear what is considered "factually correct."
