Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.

I'm... not sure they should be listed at all. It's not like we do it for writers or directors. It's information that sometimes comes up in the description of the Creator, but we don't have a segment for "influences" that says George Lucas borrows from Akira Kurosawa.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here. That's a good point. There is an Influences box on the majority of musician pages, though, and they've been very helpful to me in finding similar artists.
Artistic influence is easier to track in music than in other media, and I think it's helpful to understanding the style of the artist.
kissed by aliensOut of curiosity, can you link to an example or two of music pages with an "Influences" box? I can't say I've ever seen that, but then I don't hang out on music pages much.
Sure thing! My Chemical Romance, The Smashing Pumpkins, even The Beatles. The page I was asking in light of is the new Billie Eilish.
kissed by aliensYou know how you said "on the majority of musician pages"? My Chemical Romance cites 10 influences, but only 2 of those do the same. The Smashing Pumpkins cites 13 influences, but only 1 of those do the same. The Beatles cites 18 influences (only 11 have current pages), but 0 of those pages do the same. That's 3 of 34, a far cry from a "majority". Even adding in the 2/8 ratio from Billie Eilish, that's only 5 of 42.

Edited by TheGreatConversation kissed by aliensOf course! :)
But you made a claim and I challenged it because I don't think the box is needed. What we need is more music tropes, ones that can be used for linking artists with similar styles.

How are the "Influences" listed on Music pages determined? Does it have to be an artist the creator has specifically stated to have influenced them to be listed?
