Age of Empires II: Age of Kings

AOK introduced me to history and games as well, so its always going to have place on my shelf.... though AOM had much better graphics and a rather interesting storyline

I just wanted to play AOK but I seem to have misplaced my cd... CURSES!

And after playing like two games with Mapi, as well as several more against a meatspace friend years ago, I realized that I suck at these games, because I suck at micromanaging RTS armies.

On the other hand, unlike Mapi, I find other ways to entertain myself.

Such as discovering that the computer does not fight back against boars that attack them, by controlling nature in cheat mode. Even though they fight back against wolves. Strange.

@Mapi: Not really, walling is somewhat overrated.

You're best off exploiting a Glass Cannon strategy with the Goths (strike fast, strike hard, that they don't have time to gather an assault)

Just a request for all you guys.

I have too many games that have yet to be played in my backlog. DON'T. TEMPT. ME. I won't reinstall Age Of Empires II, you evil spirits!

^^ The problem is, if you don't keep the assault consistent enough, better armed troops will defeat you (that happened to me a couple of times).

Think of it as a failed Zealot rush.

The Goths get enough Troop upgrades, though.

And if you rely on cavalry with then you're DOIN IT WRONG.

I'm not! I'm just saying that not sending an endless stream of Huskarls will be your undoing, so you need to protect your villagers gathering food and gold for them.

That's the entire point.

Fortunately, you are the fastest troop producer as the Goths, though.

Yeah, and you need those Halberdiers too in case you get a Cav swarm.

Fortunately, their Barracks prod is diverse enough.

Champs = eat other infantry, tear through structures, and are your best bet in general.

Halbs = counter-cav.

Huskarls = useful if you encounter Elbows.

And the best part is, once you've researched the tech that allows Huskarls to be trained at the barracks...

Surround and do a multipronged attack while keeping up zergling esque streams from the main base.

Anarchy more than makes up for your lack of Stone Walls.

And Perfusion makes you into an Imperial Powerhouse.

Is it a good idea to use houses as line-of-sight outposts?

I think so, but I usually play wierdly. I make bad decisions that somehow end up working. Or ruining everything.

So, yeah. I always used houses as outposts, because they are expendable.

The problem for goths and their all-barracks setup can be spelled in one word: Onagers.

Heck, scorpions work too, although not as well. The trick is splash damage and lots of it.

EDIT: Also, if you can bother microing it: Horse Archers. Won't take out the 'karls, but if you can get those damn halberds...

I still play Age of Empires 2 from time to time. It's just that awesome. Age of Empires 3 is... different. It's definitely a Love it or hate itgame.

WMG: Aliroz's computer contains an Alternate Universe.

Re: Mongols vs. Goths: Is that because infantry can't catch properly coordinated cavalry archers?
