Well, in Rinnosuke's defense, I think part of what he picked up about computers was that they do calculations and react badly to water. Ran does calculations and water interferes with the shikigami bond in some way.
Actually, I wonder if Chen is any good at math.
Forever liveblogging the Avengers*tries and fails to come up with a joke about Chen's mathematic abilities*
Buahahaha, that's awesome.
Hmm, there's that. Also the fact that you need to have some money in order to employ a person...
I think aside from that, it's just kind of a subconscious pattern at work. "Important" human characters are often made to have a high position in the social network of the setting. Princesses, daughters of the village elder, et cetera.
That, and Marisa is such a rebellious-seeming girl that it's not hard to imagine her growing up under stuck-up rich people circumstances...
Bewitching Kaiseki did that, by the way.
I think it's not so much those Rinnosuke shippings are common so much as he has such little viable chance with anyone you could in theory justify any shipping with him.
You could justify shipping simply by claiming that he really is the only male available. Silly, but effective.
... Man, poor Rinnozzle isn't exactly attracting discussion like a maniac.
My train of thought about him keeps defaulting back to that time Tewi crotch kicked him so hard that his glasses exploded. Also because I don't really see him used that often outside of the context of shop guy who runs a shop. He's snarky but so are most Touhou characters. He has a penis but so does Unzan now and Unzan probably takes the role of manliest away. Its the beard, really.
You'd think that Rinnosuke would be more common as a forbidden template. Weird magical object? "Got it from Rinnosuke."
Oh, there is that thing in Life of Maid where he runs every center of commerce in Gensokyo ever.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersAnd sells things that are all without exception produced by a firm called "NITORI"?
I keep seeing stuff where he's portrayed as being a pervert who wants naughty pictures of the Girls, like in Hiroyuki's Acting on Instinct series and some pretty dark and distasteful ones which elaborate just HOW poor Nazrin paid for the Jewelled Pagoda. Oh, and Omchicken's portrayl of him as wanting to do a pervy photo album with naughty pictures of the Girls as revenge for them taking advantage of his shop, by using Aya as his proxy to get the photos.
Well, I suppose he also ends up the avatar for some of the more depraved fans in their H-doujinwork.

The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls! She kicked him so hard his glasses exploded? But... but if your glasses exploded, that would be a hail of glass shards right in your eyes. Harsh, Tewi, harsh.
His glasses exploded outwards, perhaps?
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!Yes! In my personal canon, Tewi now has the power to turn things into shaped charges!
I remember that was the previous picture in the Groin Attack page.
Re: The Kirisames. I've thought some about the Human Village relations, politics, and such before and came up with much the same thing others have already mentioned. That of a successful mercantile company which eventually worked its way into becoming one of the Human Village's major players. The idea is of the Hieda and Kirisame having major run of the town, including matters of bureaucracy, diplomacy with youkai factions, control over youkai hunter guilds, and commerce & finance. The Kirisame-ya would be just one of the Kirisame family's outfits.
It's a shame, to be honest. Just the treatment he gets in general. I won't lie, he's one of my favorites. He's one of the more interesting characters there is, with the potential for massive depth and source of an endless supply of stories, at least to me. But too many stories relegate him to joke character status.
Doesn't help that he's from a print work, either, which some just don't care about, or are even aware exists, sometimes. That along with the larger crime of intruding on the yuri paradise others hold dear, with those fans either giving him the Mannosuke role or rather totally forgetting he exists. But that's all fandom for you and Rinnosuke certainly isn't the first or last to get that treatment.
That's definitely not to say I hate all derogatory depictions of him. Acting on Instinct is highly enjoyable.

I think his situation could serve as a good indication of what life in Gensokyo is like for non-supers. Then again, freakishly overpowered danmaku probably attracts more viewers.
Yes. Pretty unlikely, though.
I guess Rinnosuke was just... lucky.
I have a message from another time...Or his eyes' survival is in fact evidence of his SUGOI POWAAAAAAAAAA
For a moment, he grimaced so hard his glasses couldn't take his stare of death.
Last time I checked, nobody on Pooshlmer could remember which doujin the picture of Tewi groin attacking Rinnosuke came from. Any ideas?
Good old Winter Scenery. This is the actual page though.◊
Forever liveblogging the AvengersFor a moment, I thought that Tewi's little sneaking face was one enormous grin.
...wouldn't Yukari already know the way through that corridor?
I have a message from another time...I was going to say this in the Touhou thread and then I remembered that we are discussing Tokiko here.
In chapter ten of Imperfect Metamorphosis Tokiko is portrayed as a back-up Koakuma to Patchouli when Koakuma is forced to gate-guard for a while.
Still, she did have one weakness: she loved them too much. Patchouli had found volumes lying open on tables and dropped under chairs. She had found Tokiko herself huddled away in corners, mesmerized by some new story when she should be performing her duties. If it weren't for the fact that Patchouli needed the help and Tokiko understood more about bookkeeping than any ten of the previous "recruits", she would have given the slacker the boot after the first week.
I like this portrayal of Tokiko. She's not a major character but its a nice touch.

Forever liveblogging the Avengers...She sounds like Sheska.
I have a message from another time...Good enough! I'm taking it!
Now imagine Tokiko, Keine, Akyuu, Alice and Patchouli forming a book club.
Marisa can't join because she never returns the books.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersThey could just hold the club meetings at Marisa's house.
Something I'd like to note: he doesn't think that computers are like Chen just because they react badly with water, he thinks that because his power describes them as "precisely following orders" and such.
And I love how he thought a Game Boy was an Artifact of Doom because his power didn't tell him that the things it controls are imaginary. That was a great chapter.
