After watching the finale again, while not really missing much in the way of details the first time, that ending montage really worked charms the second time.

[up][up][up][up]For a cast that big, open ended is really the only way it's gonna be...

We still don't have any certainty on what exactly led to the Lich existing, or more accurately at what point the Lich became conscious. He was clearly self-aware before the Mushroom Bomb went off given the knowledge Farmworld Finn exhibits. Where exactly did his sentience arrive from? It can't be from the human host since Farmworld Lich is just as intelligent and he took over a normal dog

Course Golb doesnt really have a mind so Lich seemed to have decided to do whatever he felt was in glory of Golb.

Extinction of all life kinda goes against the embodiment of Discord and Chaos after all.

[up][up] But Golb's creatures were like it; practically mindless. The Lich is intelligent. If he's the result of Golb's spit mutating someone, how is it that he has knowledge of what is happening in parallel universes? Why, when it mutates a normal dog, that Lich has all the knowledge the regular Lich has compared to the human-based Lich of the main universe despite being a 1000 years younger

I'm disappointed the finale didn't end with the Lich as the final boss. Golb was creepy but the Lich was just so much more entertaining.

The lich has been defeated enough times that he's lost his threat level to me.

The lich's soul arrived with the calamity commit waaaaay before the mushroom bomb. I feel like he studied GOLB rather than was created by it. He does describe himself as a "scholar of GOLB" which makes me think his powerset resembles GOLB's mutants because he taps into GOLB's power, but is otherwise unaffiliated. Heck he might have used that power to cause or at least benefit from the mushroom bomb.

I still see some hostility in way they marketed the show. Like, "the only way we would ever pay proper respect to Adventuretime again was if it was really ending." :P

I find it gutsy how the writers never shied away from explaining that Finn and Jake are basically dead in the time period from the book-ending scenes. Either that or they are permanently lost someplace no one can find them. It goes along with this show's message that change will always happen.

Oh wow ... I got the joke. Ice King has spent the majority of the show trying to have a princess fall in love with him, but it took Gunter putting on the crown himself to become Ice Thing and then, all of a sudden, marry one in the epilogue! :D :D

One question I have is why did the crown fuse with Gunther when it could be taken off with everybody else who wore it?

Everyone else who wore the crown was just affected by the original wish made...

I don't think Gunther wished to be a new Ice King, I think it just went back to it's post wish status once it was no longer inside GOLB.

It looked like it fused before the beard grew all over his face...

Also...prestablished rules say that Gunther wouldn't look like this if it was just the Crown acting normally.

I keep thinking about how Cartoon Network screwed over Adventure Time. The finale should have aired in 2016 when the hype was at it's peak, not years later after Cartoon Network strung out the new episodes.

Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult.

I think they aired the final so late into it's lifecycle because they didn't want the show to end,it was too profitable to end it so soon in their eyes anyway

The crown is defective and just repeats it's initial wish whenever anyone wears it. Betty's wish fused her with GOLB, maybe Gunter trying to use the crown caused it to malfunction and fuse him with the crown?

Interestingly, Gunter!Ice King looks even more like the original Ice Elemental than Ice King did; he even has the feet.

I think the show's rating peaked way earlier—probably like 2012-2014—though that doesn't mean they were particular bad afterward.

More to the point, the show ended because the network decided not to renew, not because any significant member of the staff wanted it to end.

Betty's wish was to "have the power to keep Simon safe."

So, that being her wish, and the crown apparently retaining that wish... I guess Ice King might be obssessed with protecting Simon - he was in Simon's house during the final montage with PB and Marcy.

finale

Welp.

...

That tied up some things I guess. I guess watching a bootleg copy at 8pm sort of takes away from the emotion of it all - I guess if I'd watched Adventure Time consistently all these years (or at least as much as Cartoon Network would allow) I'd have been more afflicted.

It was a sweet, anticlimatic ending stuffed with little details. But unlike Ed Edd n Eddy Big Picture Show, or the final episode of Powerpuff Girls, or the final season of Samurai Jack, or the series finale of Kids Next Door - I guess I'm just desensitized to things from my childhood/adolescence coming to an end now. Or maybe I was emotionally detached from this show some time ago. I don't really know but this didn't hurt me as much as I thought it might.

Hmm.

Highlights:

  • PB and Marceline kissed
  • Jake: (with Brooklyn accent) They're gunna talk about this fight for yee-urs! [lol]
  • Fern getting planted at the base of the tree
  • That moment when PB looked at Finn and saw Shoko's arm - out of everything I think this hit me the most
  • Holy crap so that's Golb
  • A giant, future Snowpea with a purple-black sword and hair covering his eyes. Bad-ass.
  • Music Hole singing the show's theme
  • More quotable, philosophical dialogue from Jake, the show's most unorthodox, funniest, and deceptively simple character
  • That giant monster battle between the Golb-monster, the infected Gumball guardian, Vampire-Mist Marceline, and the Giant Cake Robot
  • Flame Princess becoming a rapper amuses the heck out of me
  • Everyone is here - Huntress Wizard, that psychic elephant thing Jake and Finn summoned long ago, Scorcher, Finn's mom, Lemonhope, those weird chimera things locked in battle that I totally expected to come into the fray

Things I question:

  • Everyone is here - except Finn's dad, The Lich, Fionna, Cake, Vampire King, Marceline's mom, and Billy. We did get Lemongrab, Flame Princess, Cosmic Owl, Lemonhope, those weird chimera things locked in battle that I totally expected to come into the picture at some point, but they were fleeting cameos. Still, better than what Demongo and the Scotsman got in Samurai Jack.
  • Fern sure changed sides quick
  • Someone else mentioned how they called Gumbald getting dealt with early and, while I agree, still - the whole "war" basically being a crazy dream sequence just doesn't sit right with me - biggest blue-balling since Father got angry at Grandfather in Operation ZERO
  • The antics with Germaine were lost on me
  • Finn sword was buried in the tree for a reason and... Shirley and giant-not Jake just rip it out of the tree meaning that the Adventure starts over with them carrying on Finn and Jake's spirit, or that they just desecrated Fern's grave?
  • Is BMO just going to live forever? Did all of his adventures with Finn and Jake mean so little that he can't even remember their names? Sure aging is a thing but it seems kind of... either it's weird that he would forget their names while living inside of their tree house. Or maybe its just dark that his memory is so faulty.
  • I would've gotten a bigger kick out of Simon/Ice King retelling the Great Candy War than BMO telling it to two new characters. Though, what with Finn's past lives being previously established, I'm not exactly opposed to Generation Xerox with Shirley and not-Jake
  • After all of this build-up this "and then everybody lived the rest of their lives" type ending leaves me somewhat unsatisfied. I guess that's what happens when you're expecting this big fight coming up" then the fight is half dream sequence, and then this big demon space donkey shows up out of nowhere and is apparently the biggest threat to everybody and everything, but then gets assimilated and flies away to parts unknown and everybody just deals.
    • I'm guessing Golb's return was signaled episodes earlier which is why his appearance here was so... well abrupt
  • Why exactly did Gumbald's... sister? Wife? Why did she trip him and reduce him to nothing? I'm assuming he really couldn't be trusted but, in that moment, it actually seemed like he could have been trusted. PB even seemed hesitant about splashing him with the dumb-dumb juice.

I find it gutsy how the writers never shied away from explaining that Finn and Jake are basically dead in the time period from the book-ending scenes. Either that or they are permanently lost someplace no one can find them. It goes along with this show's message that change will always happen.

I was a little disturbed by that. Obviously the world is still there, but what happened to Finn and Jake? Given how "experimental" this show liked to be I was almost convinced they were about to Kill Em All - or at least kill Finn, Simon, and Betty in Golb's stomach and just force Jake and the others to live with that trauma. The world moves on and Finn eventually reincarnates - plus this show's already shown "future Ooo" a couple of times - so yes our heroes "died" but life ultimately continued.

Adventure Time

    Hrh-hrm

Good lord do shows like this make you feel old. I still remember being on CN and seeing the first commercials where Finn would ask what time it was - and me thinking, "this is replacing Chowder and Flapjack? Are you kidding? This isn't going to last a season! Who wants to watch some dumb show about a dumb kid and his dumb dog! Or a show about some dumb raccoon and a bird working in a park! These shows are so stupid!"

Those early episodes where Finn and Jake would go bonkers over Billy, or when Ice King's heart came alive and tried to date Princ... speaking of which where was he in the finale... those early episodes like The Jiggler and Business Time. They were just so weird and seemingly disconnected. I just couldn't get into this show.

I got sick of seeing the second zombie episode on TV so many times and stopped paying the show any mind, but it wasn't until a friend of mine from school tipped me off that Adventure Time was post-apocalyptic that I really got interested. I did some google-spelunking and my mind went nuts - people were posting screen shots of little background details in each episode, like wrecked cars and planes, old cities, signs of some kind of nuclear war. I had recently gotten into Fallout 3 and New Vegas mind, so this kind of thing was awe-inspiring.

Somewhere in the past few years I ended up watching the backstory episode for Marcy and Simon and hearing the song "When I Don't Remember You". I abso-fricking-lutely started to fall in love. Pretty much any Marceline episode was mandatory. I went back and reviewed her introductory episode and that, that was when I really started to think "this show is deeper than I gave it credit for." I must have listened to "I'm Just Your Problem" thirty times. If these episodes didn't seal it, the follow-up to Flame Princess's introductory episode certainly did.

Cloudy remains my favorite episode, with What Was Missing, Evicted, City of Thieves, Freak City, Wizard Battle, the one with the Snow Golem and the Fire-pup, the one with Goliad, the King Worm... okay I have a lot of runner-ups.

The point is this show gave me a lot of good memories of a much simpler time in my life. A time when I'd thought Cartoon Network dead and, thanks to this cartoon, was beginning to believe in cartoons again. Adventure Time was the first cartoon where I realized, "woah, other people watch this too, and it's actually really popular" and the first cartoon where I'd actually seen a fanbase develop around it online, as opposed to me discovering old fan sites for the show years after it ended.

It's.. odd how numb I was watching this finale, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to look back on this show fondly.
