This thread is for quick questions. A "quick question" is a question which has a relatively quick, generally factual answer; a question which is not likely to inspire an extended discussion.

e.g.

Quick Question: How tall is an average ten-year-old boy?
Not a Quick Question: Why are Americans obsessed with guns?

Quick Question: Why is ALS sometimes called Lou Gehrig's Disease? Who was Lou Gehrig?
Not a Quick Question: In Alan Dean Foster's Thranx Commonwealth series, is Pip a Mary Sue?

Get the idea?

Are you just putting the video id, or the whole URL?

youtube:dQw4w9WgXcQ, not youtube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

Though apparently using the escape characters and the youtube embed code also breaks the embed somehow.

Just the video ID. I typed two opening square brackets, then "youtube" then a colon then a space then the video ID then two closing square brackets.

Try with no space between the colon and the ID.

~Will Keaton (#9815):

I'm not an automobile engineer or otherwise any sort of expert, but you have to consider a number of factors when making cars go incredibly fast.

  • Cost. The market for a production, street-legal vehicle with that kind of power would be very small, and so the manufacturer would not expect to make much profit if any.
  • Safety. I don't see how a car can go that fast and remain anything near safe, even on the Autobahn. Maybe on race tracks, but those are designed with physical limitations as well and may not be able to accommodate such high speed. And good luck surviving if you crash, no matter how well designed the car is.
  • Physics. There are fundamental limitations on how much acceleration tires on asphalt can provide. As speed increases, wind resistance and other forms of friction increase with the square of the velocity. There are lots of tricks you can apply to overcome this, but at a certain point, the coefficient of friction of the tires even with downforce simply cannot overcome aerodynamic drag, no matter how much power the engine can provide.

I would assume that there are also limits on how much power you can generate from internal combustion: a curve of power-to-weight ratios that eventually peaks for some theoretical maximum of efficiency, but I have no idea what that looks like and don't feel like researching it.

Much, much faster ground vehicles can be made with rockets, jet engines, and similar technologies, but there's no way they would ever be considered street legal, nor put into a production car.

300mph raises questions of survivability - that's more the speed of an airplane and if you hit something at that speed the deceleration force will cause serious internal injuries. There's a reason why "there are no survivors" is such a common outcome of a fatal plane accident - and steering - how do you make turns at such a speed, and how much time do you have to change direction if something forces you to make a sudden turn?

Dangerous? Yes. But they're making cars that go that fast now. Or they're trying to. Not because it's a good idea, but to prove they can. No one is saying people would drive a car at 300 mph on a road. They just want to prove that they can build a car that can hit that mark.

I've since done research into this, and the engine of the Blue Bird, the first vehicle to break 300 mph, was 36.7 litres. That is a massive engine, one that would not fit into a car that is remotely street legal. The size of the engine of the upcoming Koenigsegg Jesko, which hopes to break the 300 mph limit, will have an engine that's 5 liters. That's seven times smaller than the Blue Bird's. So, the biggest engineering issue seems to have been making a powerful enough engine that is also small enough to fit into a street legal car, which people are just doing now. Also, I've heard it said that it's hard to engineer tires that can withstand the g-forces they would endure at 300 mph. Obviously the Blue Bird, and other record breaking vehicle, had wheels, but I don't think they had "tires." At least not the same kind a street legal car would have to have.

Who first invented colored emojis like these: evil gringrinsurprisedsmilesad?

[up]The yellow smiley-face was created by a graphic designer named Harvey Ball, the text-based ":-)" was suggested by computer scientist Scott Fahlman, and the first pictographic emoji were invented by japanese artist Shigetaka Kurita. I'm not sure exactly when the yellow faces merged with the emoji format (such as the ones on TV Tropes), but it was sometime in the early 2000s. Later on, Google became involved with standardizing emoji into the form we have now.

It's far from standardized. Everyone who wants in on it takes the Unicode description of what the character stands for and comes up with their own design.

The icons you can put in your post like in [up][up][up] from the forum post box aren't emoji. They are emoticons, emotes, or smilies. Emoji are encoded as actual characters with Unicode codepoints. 😛 is an emoji. tongue is an image that the forum parser inserts to replace the markup of the bracketed word "tongue"

An emoticon is specifically an image made by putting characters together, like the original :)

"Emoticon" is also used to refer to graphical emotes and smilies used in forums, messaging services, and social networking services, especially where by default they convert recognized text emoticons like :) into graphical emoticons. There's even a Unicode block named "Emoticons" that was created for much of the original emoji implemented into Unicode for compatibility with Shift JIS encoding.

Basically "emoticon" can mean a lot of things but "emoji" are specifically characters with a pictographic representation.

Generally white-collar jobs whose duties can be performed at home- I'm a web developer and we're allowed to work from home, but even though nobody really minds as long as you're visibly getting work done, people only do it occasionally, like if they have someone coming over or have an appointment. We're not yet to the point of having any employees who work remote most/all of the time.

Googling around for "jobs that can be done from home", in terms of entry-level positions that don't require prior education, I'm seeing mostly data entry, customer service, copywriting/transcription/just plain writing gigs, and certain in-home businesses. See if your friends or family know anybody, just start Googling around for work-at-home jobs in your area, and see what works for you.

The company that I work for has recently (within the past two years) implemented a program allowing employees, with their managers' approval, to make remote work days part of their regular schedules, as well as to use "flex time" (different working hours) as long as they are meeting the requirements of their jobs.

Most employees can already work remotely on-demand, so this is more of an evolutionary state than a revolutionary change. Excluding field staff (sales and service personnel), office employees that only work remotely are much rarer, and we have run into productivity and management issues.

You upload through the image uploader accessed when editing a wiki page. It gives you the markup to embed the newly-uploaded image in a wiki page. Take the image's URL from that markup and just paste it in your post.
