If Oscar Wilde had lived in our time, he would be a /b/tard.

Actually, scratch that. He does, and goes by Jethro Q Walrustitty.

Sometimes jokes get funnier when you explain them.

It's a longshot, though. I'll admit that one was a miss.

Clarke was good for his insane humanist mysticism and Asimov was a chemist writing about robotics.

I think I liked sci-fi better when it wasn't authors speculatively wanking over science and refusing to enjoy it when it's not 100% realistic.

Exactly! They're interesting when they're writing about science they know jack shit about!

So has Pipman ever done anything but make unfunny shitposts?

Yeah, s/he's occasionally seen posts that seem insane even to him/her I guess, and attempted to respond seriously. Doesn't work that great.

Myrmidon, you're good at reading. Could you help me figure out what this means?

It has a living interest only for two classes, and firstly for those who believe (a) that a Secret Religious Tradition has been perpetuated from the past; (b) that the literature in question has served as one of its vehicles. It is customary to describe such persons as esoteric or occult students, because in most cases they are so denominated by themselves. One purpose among others of this initial book is to shew that their equipment in respect of textual and other knowledge is not only insufficient to maintain the claim but is of a kind that their claim implies.

I think it's trying to say that the books that people claim have carried on a secret mystical tradition aren't understandable to the people who claim to study them.

Oh, a "All these other guys are dumb, but I know what I'm talking about" thing. That would fit, certainly.

Thanks.

I think it would be funny if every "thy" in the KJV Bible was replaced with "thigh". Maybe on the Bible Gateway online version. Not forever, just for April Fools Day.

My wife and I started randomly watching the latest show that’s about Gordon Ramsey screaming at people who make non-five star restaurant food. This was our local FOX affiliate and afterwards the news came on.

One of the stories was a bout a young woman who swindled about a quarter of a million dollars from a 95 year old man that she pretended to befriend. Money was spent on drugs mostly, from what I an tell.

Now, I am all for the person being removed from society for a long time but one man interviewed thought “homicide” was the closest possible comparable crime and a woman who was interviewed thought the woman should be “publically hanged.”

I’m not sure why networks show sit-coms on primetime when they could just reair random interview from people on the street.

Well there is some hard sci-fi that's good, like Stross. But most don't seem so bold as to have communist space lobsters.
