Woo! Finished Meat, not done with Candy yet but I'm basically spoiled on everything. Meat is really good, I'm not sure about Candy yet.

Holy shit I now realize...

The ghosts being sucked into the black hole are being shot out in the Candy route. That's what happened with the younger Jade! We saw her die in the Meat timeline and now her corpse appears in the Candy timeline!

...shit makes sense! Or at least I think it does.

Just finished both routes. I still need to figure out whether the ideas were good or not, but the writing is still amazing.

And now I'm fucking depressed. At least their is one timeline where John lives.

Just finish Meat and, of all things, I wasn't expecting a cliffhanger. Alright, ok, guess I will die before Homestuck actually ends for real.

Anyway, liked it. I can see why many didn't, though some complaints I have heard are a bit silly. At any rate, it is definitively not for everyone. Off to Candy now.

EDIT: And now I've read the first chapter of Candy and, ok, alright, sure. That is already going places. That is fast.

I kinda feel bad for Dirk tbh. He's long realized how much of an asshole he was before Meat and regretted if, but by merging with every version of himself to become Ultimate Dirk, which would include the parts of him in Lil Hal, Lil Cal, Doc Scratch, Bro, Lord English, and ones who didn't learn a lesson, he's effectively become the worst version of himself.

Some of his dialogue is pretty Doc Scratch too.

So, a bit more into Candy and I understood a recommendation I read before starting. I read that supposedly you should choose a route, any route, and stick to it to the end, before reading the other. They were written with they in mind and each become a completely different experience depending on if you read first or second.

And, yeah, that is totally true, I think. Five chapters into Candy and a lot of what is said have a very different meaning now I read the entirety of Meat. Make me want to reread it after Candy, to know what I missed.

Attempting to read all the pages in this thread is so... irritating :/

I love how the subreddit is freaking the fuck out. No one knows how to react, so all they can do is theorize and piece everything together.

One such theory is that meat timeline results in Caliborn and Lord English while candy timeline results in Alt-Calliope.

Considering all the cosmic fuckery I bet its the opposite.

I also notice people trying to create the design for Meat timeline Roxy after his transition.

It has also been noted that Hussie has been setting up Dirk's Face–Heel Turn for a long time.

My favorite title: "The Epilogue is good and I still kind of hate it."

(Spoilers for both routes, I think?) Wait, Roxy's what? Huh. I would not have guessed that. Especially if Roxy only goes by he in one of the two timelines, because if I followed along with some other stuff correctly, they're nonbinary in Candy, but I guess I could be wrong.

Personally, I've got nothing against the development itself; it feels out of nowhere to me, but I'd imagine it works well in its actual context, or at least that it could. The Epilogue sounds long enough to develop that kind of story arc, and it's definitely plausible somebody only comes to that sort of self-realization a while after sixteen. From personal experience, even. Still, the Epilogues are basically fanfic to me, and so my conception of Roxy-in-general is as a girl, and I'm hoping that doesn't lead to like, offending somebody whose conception of Roxy-in-general reflects the Epilogues? Maybe I'm worrying too much.

I can definitely see it causing issues in how to refer to the character in question on the pages, as the epilogues themselves are pretty dubious insofar as their canonocity is concerned, and the fact that it seems to be different in different timelines only makes it more complicated.

Part of me is wondering if it might be a good idea to create separate character profiles for pre-existing Homestuck characters that appear in the Epilogue. What do you guys think?

For clarification it’s only in the Meat timeline. Roxy starts out female, then shifts to gender neutral with Calliope, and then is male by the end, and he looks like Dave. In the Candy timeline, Roxy remains female and marries John and gets pregnent though apparently she had a period of uncertainty before hand. I think Roxy as a whole is genderfluid from what has been shown.

Just read Candy. My soul hurts, and I love it. There may be certain characterization decisions that I don't quite agree with, but I thoroughly enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Now to see how Meat destroys me!

(Also, I know that Hussie is a Ship Sinking master, but what he did to Dave/Jade was brutal even by his standards.)

So, would you guys say that Candy counts as a Bad Future (in that it qualifies as "future" and not "present").?

I gotta say, I can see why HIC wanted Jade and Jane as her heralds now. With Jane in particular as her direct apprentice.

Yeah I'd definitely say so. The original profiles would get pretty confusing with some of these character changes.

man some characters just got shafted hard in both timelines. jade got left by her husband who ascended to ultimate dave in candy and is comatose in meat not to mention game over jade being a puppet for alt callie. jane is a xenaphobe who goes full hitler in one timeline and will probably have an easier time to do it in the other. and thats not even getting into dirk. most of the others at least kinda sorta ended up good in at least one timeline but those three just got it bad

im not saying its not but still if you were attached at all to dirk and his struggle to not become his worst selves its kinda sad to see

I've read Meat, and am partway through Candy. Is it just me, or is the Candy narrator being a lot less subtle and restrained about fucking with the character's heads than Dirk was in Meat? I've noticed a few times when they abruptly change their minds about sometimes just because the narrator said so; pushing them all into 'happy endings'.

Which leads me to believe that the Candy narrator isn't Calliope; in Meat she understood that inserting thoughts into their heads was A Bad, even if you think it's for their own good. And then the narrator called Dave and Karkat 'pitiful beta boys', which made me think it was Dirk again, but that rather emphatically turned out not to be the case. So idk, but there's definitely something fucky going on here.
