Bump. Shouldn't let this die. Rather silly name, and I'm pretty sure it's covered by other tropes.

Rename to Press X To Shout if nothing else, current name means nothing unless you're familiar with Heavy Rain.

It probably could do some example trimming, too, since some of the "Press Button do Do Stuff" things in there actually does stuff (like the call your horse example).

It is my opinion that some action needs to be taken here and I wouldn't be averse to just cutting Press X To Jason, though I'd be fine with changing it to something that A) Makes sense and B) has proper grammar

Title made me think of Friday The13th. Definitely needs a rename.

The title made me think it was about having a key to quickly switch to the chainsaw. Definitely needs to be renamed or cut.

This Button Is For Yelling

Also Taunt Button should be about leaving yourself vunrable like a character standing in one place doing an animation.

X to Jason Should provide ambience without leaving yourself vunrable.

Page action crowner, since this thread has been going on for months.

I'm for cutting, myself. It's a mix between Taunt Button (atmospheric action) and People Sit On Chairs (action whereby somebody makes a noise), and it doesn't look like there's much worth merging.

I think there's a trope in here of "Press X To Holler", wherein one uses a vocal action to perform some function. Pulling examples from Press X To Jason-

  1. In Shadow Of The Colossus you can have Wander call for his horse, Agro.

  • Likewise, in Ico by the same company, the titular boy can call out for Yorda, a girl he escorts around. Before you find her or if she's far out of range, he'll just make an odd yell. Unlike most examples, Yorda will react and come to you.
[Also, whistling can attract the attention of Collossi.]

  1. Can be done in Dead Rising to herd survivors.

  • Oddly, it also works in Infinity Mode, where it is completely useless (all the survivors are trying to kill you.)

  1. The up button in Red Dead Redemption calls your horse. As an Acceptable Break From Reality, you will always call a horse even if the one you legally own has died. This can be abused for a source of income.

  2. The Maw has a button so the main character can yell "Maw!", usually to call him to you.
  3. During battles in Pokemon Colosseum, if a Shadow Pokemon goes into Hyper Mode, there is an option available to use up a turn to call out to the Pokemon and snap it back to normal.

  4. In Samurai Warriors 2, Keiji can call for his horse, and so can any player character as long as they have a horse equipped in Dynasty Warriors 5; Warriors Orochi expanded it so anybody could call a horse.
  5. In most of the Harvest Moon games, there are buttons to whistle for your dog or horse. In some games this also catches the attention of nearby {=NP Cs=].

Another example that I can think of: In The Legend Of Zelda Wind Waker, during the various escort missions of statues and characters ( Medli, Makar), the Call button (I *think* it's L, not sure) causes Link to shout "Come on!" and causes the character to follow you.

Bump.

Whoa, this is old! Still, crowner is clearly for a rename.... Which is unfortunate, because we were having trouble deciding what the difference was between this and Taunt Button.

[up][up] This has a gameplay function. Taunt Buttons don't.

I say rename. It's not the same as Taunt Button - there are a lot of games where calling actually does something, usually summoning your pet/ally or getting people's attention. And of course in multiplayer games without voice chat, it can be used to communicate.

Yep. Where as a Taunt Button is required to have absolutely NO gameplay function beyond maybe doing a small amount of damage.

Ahh, sounds like we do have a good definition, then.

Now, for a name...

Press X To Holler
Holler Button
Push A For Ambient Action
Press X To Shout
Press X To Speak
Press X To Call
Press X For Atmosphere

And some others, but they suggested the button did nothing, or was just another name for Taunt Button.

@shima: Rather, a Taunt Button should have no tangible effects on gameplay, period, but if its only effect is obviously trivial, that's close enough. (I'm taking out the reference to Finger Poke of Doom because that's something with genuine power underneath its trivial appearance.)

I can't believe we never actually got around anything with this.

I'm still for a rename.

[up][up] Ah, either way, this often has a tangible effect. Summoning your horse, back up, or having it be the search mechanic are all possibilities. There's enough places where they can't overlap by definition that we can't merge them without things losing tropiness.

I would rename this and rework the wording a little. The trope namer brought awareness to this trope, but it is has been in video games for a while now. It is sometimes a staple of escort missions, where this is used to call over the person you're escorting. Make it a subtrope of Escort Mission. Most examples already fit, so not much needs to be reworked.

You see, I thought this was that thing that happens in some slasher style games. You have a button that screams, and it actually can get you away from your attacker.

At least, there was some game with a scissorman and clocktower I remember from my youth.

I like the title as it is. However, if a change does go through, my vote is for "Press X to Call/Shout" or something similar to "Call/Shout Button".
