I mean I was assuming a bad faith idiot, but that’s as worthy of a hollar as an actual troll trying to get a rise.

"...haven't even denied Turkey committed so-called war crimes".
There's an immediate self-contradiction for you.
"Any campaign world where an orc samurai can leap off a landcruiser to fight a herd of Bulbasaurs will always have my vote of confidence"I tend to find that nothing good comes from people who say “so-called war crimes”.
They should have sent a poet.Sometimes we attract the crazies.
Poor bastards on the bad end of that though. Wish our President wasn't such a walking cluster fuck. Then maybe I could have even a shallow hope we would do something.
Who watches the watchmen? He'd been talking about a withdrawal for over a year. Nobody really managed to do anything about it.
But I'm wondering what this is going to mean to the Russian operation. Putin is just as anxious to withdraw and doesn't really want to commit more boots on the ground than he has to, but the new frontier is going to need a good deal more manpower and resources to secure, far away from the main Russian bases in Tartus and Khmeimim. That plus Assad's upcoming Idlib offensive and the possibility of a fresh insurgency in Rojava means that the intervention isn't winding down anytime soon.
Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)Russian "mercenaries" are already crawling around the bases we abandoned. I doubt they're going anywhere
Oh really when?Wagner isn't a good counterweight against Turkey. Putin will have to deploy at least a few battalions' worth of MP and several long-term bases to properly secure Rojava. The Russians tried to avoid deploying ground troops into areas with high risk of insurgency in the past, but they don't have many good alternatives if they don't want the Turks to gobble up the northeast.
Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)I think it was confirmed that some 500 M Ps are getting deployed.
Si Vis Pacem, Para PerkeleBeen a mass shooting by a Russian soldier in Gorny.
Six officers and two conscripts killed immediately. BBC mentioned that the shooter was a conscript and may have mental issues.
Analysts are suggested bullying.
"Exit muna si Polgas. Ang kailangan dito ay si Dobermaxx!"More news on the shooting in Russia:
The ministry said the attack happened Friday at a military base in the town of Gorny, 150 kilometers (93 miles) north of the border with Mongolia.
Two of those killed were officers and the others were enlisted men. The two wounded soldiers reportedly were in serious condition.
Russia's Investigative Committee said it had opened a murder case against the suspect, whom it identified as 20-year-old Ramil Shamsutdinov.
The Defense Ministry said the soldier apparently opened fire in a "nervous breakdown over personal problems unrelated to his military duties." A deputy defense minister was heading to the base to conduct an investigation.
Shootings and other violent outbursts plagued the Russian military in the 1990s and early 2000s when it suffered from desperate cash shortages and low morale. They have become relatively rare in recent years as conditions in the Russian military have improved.
Tragic but not unexpected in a conscript military - I've heard of similar cases in South Korea and Kazakhstan. RIP.
Newsweek: US targeted Islamic State's Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. All the other news sites are quoting Newsweek on this and Idlib is a longtime HTS stronghold, so I'd be surprised if it turned out to be true.
Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)There's an old essay that examines the psychological and sociological aspects of military conscription. If I can find it, I'll post it.
tl:dr: If you have more than 12 years of time-in-service, your enlistment will be auto-extended to match with your High Year of Tenure date. This way airmen don't need to go through the admin hassle of re-upping if they get an overseas assignment or a promotion near the end of their contract. Per the article (and comments CMSAF Wright has made on Facebook), airmen can still separate or retire before their HYT provided they've met their active-duty service commitment.
Why the heck wasn't that in place years ago? <scratches head>
Updates in the Syrian theater via NHK:
Kurdish forces have announced they will withdraw from the Turkey-Syria border area at Turkey's request.
Turkey launched a military operation in northern Syria earlier this month to remove Kurdish forces from the border area. It regards them as terrorists.
But Turkey said on Tuesday it would not initiate further military operations, after it struck a deal with Russia to cooperate in the removal of fighters from the area.
Turkey and Russia agreed that Russian military police and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's border guards would enter an area outside Turkey's field of operation.
They said the personnel will work to remove Kurdish forces from the border area within 150 hours from Wednesday noon.
Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said on Sunday that they will withdraw from the border area. This is the first time Kurdish forces have publicly acknowledged their decision.
A local TV station reported that dozens of cars carrying Kurdish fighters and weapons were pulling out of Amuda, a town near the border in northeastern Syria, as Russian military personnel looked on.
However, the Kurdish forces say they will continue to control the area after their military sectors pull out. It is unclear whether Turkey will acknowledge the withdrawal and tensions will be eased.
Euodiachloris, it's like this:
- The US Military Personnel system as it stands was developed for the Cold War. Officers and enlisted moving around the world from assignment to assignment with "up or out" moving people along.
- The purpose was to always have fresh troops at any given station. The reality was that, even in the draft era, people found ways to extend their assignments, game the system or just get the shaft by the DOD.
- The old "up or out" rules for the enlisted Joes were all about making sure "only the most qualified make rank". Again that is so far from the truth and I coudn't type that with a straight face. Many vets will tell you of the fat, lazy, dumb waste of oxygen they served under who somehow made high rank.
- The Air Force has it worse than the other services as only 1% of their enlisted can have the highest rank of Chief Master Sergeant.
- Officers across the DOD have to make rank at certain times, with fewer being selected for promotion the higher up the rank is. At the O-5 level and above, the frackin' US Senate must approve promotions.
- Obstructive Bureaucrats infest the DOD - sometimes making a simple job or task more Film/Brazil than Band of Brothers
The result is that Arabic language speakers get orders for Korea, enlisted servicemembers are forced out because they can't be promoted but to see their friends make rank next month due to changes in the promotion scores, a civilian with a degree in history or computer science enlisting for infantry....I could go on.
A hearty HOOHA! from the Army vet for the Air Force finally breaking from the Cold War era management.

All night at the computer, cuz people ain't that great. I keep to myself so I won't be a case on The First 48A question about laser-guided munitions: can they move in the water for anti-submarine warfare?
Not exactly. Visible light gets mostly absorbed by the water beyond a few hundred metres. Blue-green wavelengths are less easily absorbed, but they still wouldn't travel far enough to guide your weapon beyond knife-fighting range. Even within that distance, local gradients in temperature and turbidity can mess up the transmission of the beam, so don't expect to be able to paint the target reliably. Most ASW weapons in real life are acoustically guided for that reason.
Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)Also, missiles don’t really enter the water. Anti-submarine missiles usually release a depth charge or torpedo, they don’t dive in the water themselves.
They should have sent a poet.Meanwhile in Finland, Non-EU and non-EEA buyers need permission to buy real estate as of 2020
With the new legislation, the Ministry of Defence will become the permission authority; it will process permission applications and make decisions on permissions in entire Finland, with the exception of the Åland Islands. Buyers from outside the EU and EEA must apply for a permission either before a real estate transaction or within two months after it. In the initial phase, a permission is applied for by using a form and later in an electronic service system.
From a Certain Point of View, regulating the transfer of real estate is technically every military's job description.

I mean hey, sometimes we just get idiots who come in here and not just weird shills.
I tend to assume the former before the latter.
Oh really when?
