Do you know the American Girls Collection - the makers of the dolls with the "historic" theme (1880's, The '60s, etc)? They are out with a series of American Girl dolls with a "historic" The '90s theme....

Isabel and Nicki Hoffman (1999): Live in Seattle at the Turn of the Millennium. Twins who have very different styles and interests (Isabel likes pink and parties, Nicki likes grunge and skateboarding), but still love and value each other. The second paired historical release, after Marie-Grace and Cecile.

....and now my joints ache....

Since going back to the office, I've had to tote my company laptop to and from every day. The company issued laptop bag tore a strap within a month, so I started using a Swiss Gear backpack I bought years ago. Now that has a tear, right by the zipper.

After researching laptop backpacks, of which there are many fancy "adult" models and brands, I ordered a Jansport. What can I say? They were good enough for highschool.

Double post, but I've reached a real "you are middle aged" milestone: I had my first mammogram today.

Ow.

How are folks doing? It's finally getting niceish here in Omaha, NE. Which for me means more strange folk wandering into the store on my shift.

I'm pretty good, just working and gaming and coming with stuff for my now-2-years-long-running Cyberpunk RED campaign (of which Drunk Scriblerian is co-GM and part of)

Planning on getting back into school in the fall and instead of just doing the gen-ed stuff at Macomb and then transferring to MSU, I'm just gonna aim to get the bachelor's in Microbiology at Macomb and then transfer to MSU for postgrad stuff.

Good plan I hope that works out all the way in. It's nice when you have a long-running game. It is so easy to lose track of time. I hope your players set stuff on fire less than mine do.

Moved to Turkey with a 3-month old baby, solved the issue of walking him in winter. Now we're waiting for the summer to come, as the locals say it hasn't been this cold in April in the years before. Probs we brought the cold with us.

Still, it's plus 18-19 degrees Celsius here in Antalya over minus 25 in Astana in winter. Great exchange, no matter how you look at it.

Spiral out, keep going.

"With Maximum PC and MacLife’s abandonment of print, the dead-tree era of computer journalism is officially over. It lasted almost half a century—and was quite a run."

I fondly remember buying PC Accelerator, PC Gamer, Maximum PC and Computer Shopper and dreaming of computer gaming goodness. Alas, this will be no more.

At the end of it's print run, Maxium PC sounded more like fanboys than the "call them as they see them" magazine they started out as in The '90s. They rarely panned any hardware and they raved about a lot of gear that the average computer user couldn't afford. Okay the "Dream Machine" was PC excess that would make Slaneesh blush but that was the point of the "Dream Machine". The rest of the mag was supposed to be about PC hardware in general.

While I agree that between Youtube, Reddit, various sites and forums -coupled with the speed of advances in PC hardware - the print magazine was a victim of Time Marches On.... I'm still gonna miss'em.

The sheer joy of going to the store and picking up a print mag that was only about PC hardware. Just the celebration of PC's and what the average user could do with some time, money and lots of patience.

Funny story time.

A guest comes up with her kid to buy a breakfast sandwich and a bottle of soda.

I ring her up and she says sandwiches are on sale.

This instantly confuses me. There was nothing about the sandwiches being for sale in notes or memos and we tend to advertise specials like that pretty openly. Like signs on the warmers and/or up at the counters.

I told her I hadn't heard about it. She said it was on one of the windows.

I look outside at the usual spots and see nothing mentioning sandwiches. This further confuses me I have no idea where she got it.

I tell her as much, she insists she is right but doesn't fight me on it and pays and leaves.

I'm watching as she is walking to her car with her kid and she points to the sign she saw. At that moment it clicks into place for me.

She was pointing at a sign for something completely different. We have leftover 70lb sandbags from winter in a pile for sale. The sign read "Sand Special $3 or 2 for $5. "

Coincidentally those bags are now on clearance for 1 buck plus tax.

Hey Tuffel, did you hear about the Elvis superfan who wrote to a Burger King in Ohio back in The '80s because she believed that Elvis was alive and worked there?

The letter was sent back to her marked "Return To Sender".....

x-posted from the Computer thread:

Microsoft-branded mice and keyboards are going away after 40 years

Here's the money quote:

“Going forward, we are focusing on our Windows PC accessories portfolio under the Surface brand,” Microsoft's Dan Laycock said. “We will continue to offer a range of Surface-branded PC Accessories—including mice, keyboards, pens, docks, adaptive accessories, and more. Existing Microsoft-branded PC accessories like mice, keyboards, and webcams will continue to be sold in existing markets at existing sell-in prices while supplies last.”

The biggest question is whether Microsoft intends to keep making cheaper, more budget-friendly accessories under the Surface brand or if it wants to discontinue these products entirely and focus entirely on higher-end, higher-margin devices.

NLG - I'll miss Micro$oft branded keyboards and their ergonomic bluetooth mice are kinda nice. I hope the Surface branded mice and keebs work with PC's.

When I was in college, there was a small tech expo at the library where Microsoft had a touchscreen table called Surface. It was a big comedown, but it still made sense, when they brought the Surface tablet to market. And then it still kind of made sense when they called their convertible laptop Surface. But 14 years ago I thought by now we'd have tables and walls called Surface, not mice and keyboards.
