It's not so much that they're over-running the subforum as it is that they are consistently on the top of the list where everyone checks the most. Other forum games don't update as fast and thus get pushed downwards where fewer people will notice them.
There's also my personal opinion that the avatar games are indicative of the subforum being bereft of creativity.

They're constantly at the top because they get a lot of posts. Which in turn means that they appeal to people enough to accumulate a lot of posts. There's something crosseyed about getting wanting to rid of threads because they're popular.

It really appears that the problem is the avatar games are a large-ish clump of similar games. The others are all over the map — you've got "ITT:"s and "Count to X without Y" games and meme-based games and trope-based games and troper-based games and "X character does Y" games and question-and-answer games, and so on. The "avatar" games are the largest single group, but the numbers simply do not support the claim that they are over-running the whole games forum.
