Can we just move this to Sugarwiki?

Sugar Wiki and Darth Wiki are not dumping grounds for problematic tropes, they're merely subjective and likely to start an argument. This trope, however "broken" it may be, is not subjective.

You know, whatever happens, happens, but making a trope Awesome Yet Practical that is merely Exactly What It Says on the Tin is not going to work. The fact that this trope is in the repair shop is because everyone has their own idea of what the trope name means. I would say it's either agree on a definition (something that actually tries to give meaning to it as opposed to a random list of cool things, which we already have in So Cool Its Awesome) or just delete if you think it's too broken.

[up] The definition for "Awesome" would be the same as whatever Awesome, but Impractical uses, and the definition for "Practical" would be the same as whatever Boring, but Practical uses. Seems okay, right?

^ Neither tropes actually try to define the terms, just makes a vague approximation of what the tropes mean. If you were to speculate based on how they're worded, Awesome means "A weapon, device or skill that is a nuke in comparative power" and Practical means "Useful for a common occurance or a variety of circumstances." The only real difference with how the trope is now is that the Awesome part has a stronger focus on skill and doesn't have to be a nuke-level power (ie a Game-Breaker).

I would like to suggest Simply Awesome for the new trope. Also, the split is winning and is unanimous.

Fight smart, not fair.

Looks like a consensus to split. Any volunteers to write up the new description for the redefined Awesome Yet Practical?

I like Simply Awesome for one of the split tropes as well, unfortunately, I can foresee that suffering widespread misuse for anything awesome.

So we go through all of this and no one is interested in actually fixing the trope?

I say that we take this line from the description "To be awesome yet practical is when there is an attempt to avoid a more complicated solution in favor of a practical one." and make it the yardstick to judge all other examples. We cut anything that are holdouts from other ideas like "realism" or "this is useful and cool" and we hack it away. Any references to the skill and talent of an individual can be kept, as an untrained individual is more likely to be inefficient.

We then comb through the wicks and clean it up the best we can. It seems that no one is interested in putting in the effort to split off a new trope or even clean up the trope as is, so lets just make the trope work somehow and get the trope repair banner off it. If nobody has any complaints I'll start work on it on February 7th, two days from now.

(Sigh) There it is, I removed all of the "this thing is AWESOME" examples I could find, but my eyes are fried from sorting through all the examples, I likely missed one or two. I also removed anything that used the "this is realistic" criteria as that is no longer part of the description (merely referred to as a possible side-effect). The description is now solely about solving complicated problems with simple and practical solutions. I'll see what I can do about examples around the wiki, but I imagine this will be a very difficult clean-up process.

Awesome Yet Practical is supposed to stay the trope for subversions of Awesome, but Impractical, where the awesome thing turns out to be practical after all. The bit about simplicity is the one we decided to split off.

Did you even read post #70 before you agreed it to be a good idea? I don't think I was misleading in my intentions in any way. No one is interested in putting forth the effort to split the trope, and I've stated repeatedly in the discussion that the proposed redefinition is even more vague than the original. If no one is interested in fixing it according to the crowner, the trope is kind of at the mercy of anyone who wants to clean it up.

I assumed you were talking about the new trope to be split off. tongue

The crowner is 11:1 in favor of the leading option with the next-closest option 25 points behind at -5. That's consensus.
