Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up][up] Is it just endless shock factor or not? Because there's this on the FAQ

I just saw this Torture Porn work that was so sick! The villain here is an easy keeper!: OK, there's one thing you need to consider: Does the film have a substantive plot? By this, we mean a plot that's more than "depraved person tortures people For the Evulz."

Creepypasta follows the same rules.

EDIT: Actually even if it doesn't follow that rule I'm [tdown] for being way too mysterious. How are we suppose to qualify it if we don't understand why it's doing these actions? Even For the Evulz is a reason, but if there's no understandable reason for why it's doing what it does, there's moral agency issues, possible Blue-and-Orange Morality or it could be a GDV.

The original story itself is about the protagonist trying to resist the insanity while trying to uncover the mystery surrounding the possessed photo (though failing at both).

Read "Ghost Stories of Remnant" here.

Smile Dog is an absolute no. No character. No discernible motive. It fails the clause for the trope for the exact same reasons as the Rake. We don't upvote a character based on what we assume it is or what it wants; under that logic, we might as well put up the bloody Blair Witch.

Funny; I actually conversed with Scraggle over Smile Dog. I agree; it doesn't count.

I don't think you're breaking any rules. It's been more than 2 weeks since this episode was released, and Riddler is dead.

[tup] Riddler

I think Ravok's reserved discussion of this series. If he has, leave the effortpost to him, please.

I can confirm that Ravok's got the reservation, so we shan't be voting on your Effort Post. Just make sure to check in the future.

The rules state that for video games and tv shows, if the villain dies and the arc is clearly finished, than the villain can be discussed after the two week rule. The episode is almost a month old, and Riddler is dead at the end of it. So I didn't break any rules, and I was unaware that Ravok had settled on discussing it.

I would also like to point out the rules state that anyone can bring up a potential candidate and the rules aren't clear on whether or not someone reserved a potential media item.

[tdown] To Smile Dog.

I would also wait on Riddler till all the episodes are released, Riddler claims the government made him the way he is and I want to see what Joker and other villains end up doing.

'No' to Smile Dog.

I'm of the firm belief that we should have NO further proposals of Dreamworks' Dragons villains until the series ENDS. Because until that point? The chances of a villain getting an Ass Pull Heel–Face Turn will ALWAYS be there.

As for Riddler? I would kindly ask you to remove the effort post. Now. You have been here long enough to know how the Discussion Dates work, and Riddler was a MAJOR one I had on my to-propose list. As such? If you don't remove the EP, I will be calling in a mod to do it for you. This is a blatant violation of rules we have set, and this isn't the first time someone has pulled this crap not just with me, but with others.

Excellent. Don't do this again, please, and keep these policies in mind for the future. I can chalk this up to obliviousness for now but we won't be so lenient on another incident like this.

[tdown]for Smile Dog. It was good Effort Post but as other’s have pointed out, the fact that we don’t know its motive disqualifies Smile Dog. Which is rather common among supernatural creepypasta creatures. It's also the reason why most CM on the creepypasta page are humans.smile

Ok, soooo...to entertain myself for a bit...I have a proposal from a poor movie or two!

What's The Work?

The Juror was a poor film starring Demi Moore as a woman named Annie Laird selected for jury duty in a high profile murder case implicating Mob Boss Louie Boffano for the murder of one Salvatore Riggio...and his entire family, child included. However, as the trial begins, Annie is approached by a charming man named Mark Cordell played by Alec Baldwin...who is the hitman known as The Teacher who performed the hit, who attempts to force Annie to persuade the jury to vote Not Guilty on Boffano...

Who is Mark Cordell and What Has He Done?

A cunning, ruthless psychopath and deadly mob hitman, Cordell opens the film by killing Riggio and his entire family...a young child in the house sees the murder, only to be stalked by Cordell who without a hint of expression stalks the child into a corner, raises his gun and pulls the trigger. Riggio's death wouldn't have been worth much of anything to law enforcement. The kid made it something else. Promising Boffano he can deal with it, Cordell begins stalking Annie, growing obsessed with her as he gives a very clear threat: have the jury acquit Boffano or she and her 12 year old son Oliver will die.

Stalking Annie further, in an attempt to isolate her for himself, Cordell meets with Annie's friend at a club, a nurse who's a recovering drug addict. After seducing and sleeping with her, he holds a gun to her head and forces her to take a fatal overdose of her pills. Annie, realizing how insane Cordell is, uses a sympathetic mobster named Eddie to help her incriminate Cordell talking about his ambitions to take over the outfit, and sends Oliver to Guatemala to protect him and gives the tape recording to Boffano. Boffano calls Cordell for a....'chat' and prepares to kill him. Only for Cordell to turn the tables, revealing he was already planning on killing him at the meeting, blowing up Boffano's rigged car, killing his men and slashing Eddie's throat for good measure. He then calls Annie, furious, blaming her 'nature' for everything and saying Oliver has to die as a result. Annie manages to intercept Cordell when he gets to Guatemala to go after Oliver. Annie manages to shoot Cordell who feigns repentance...only to pull a gun, resulting in Annie emptying her gun into him and finishing him off for good.

Heinous Standard?

Worst by far. Boffano is all offstage villainy, and has standards. The other mobsters are just professionals and there seems to be a strict "no kids" rule, if only for pragmatic reasons. Cordell has a large bodycount, some really vile cruelty and has no compunction murdering kids.

Mitigating Qualities?

Cordell at one point claims to love Annie, but it's more an insane obsession. He stalks her, threatens her son's life, murders her friend to punish and isolate her and when she 'betrays' him, he tries to murder her son and tries to kill her at the end. Eddie, by contrast, has a daughter of his own and is disturbed at Cordell's psychopathy. so, yeah, no real mitigating quality here.

Conclusion? Easy keeper says I. Ye?

[tup] Cordell. His love sounds too obsessive to count and not proper love, kinda like Frollo's "love".
