This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

~Hiikamaru: Actually, you have been rude and offensive. Your edits on Thomas the Tank Engine complaining about the introduction of new (female) characters indicate hostility towards gender equality and have no place on our wiki, nor indeed in society. You have also complained about racial diversity.

That aside, our articles aren't to be used to vent complaints about things you don't like in media.

Been trying to get my editing privileges back by using the Grammar forum but I still haven't yet regained them. Which is getting annoying whenever I have something to contribute to a page. It has also led me to question why I was recommended the Grammar forum in the first place, when the chances of what I type there are entirely at the whims of whoever else reads them.

Can I please be allowed to edit again to demonstrate the progress I've made in my writing by contributing to this site?

~ Fighteer I knew you’d ban me for political reasons and my supposed anti-diversity stance. I do care for women’s rights and minority rights, but the way that series is handling it is in a very blatant manner that just alienated me big-time. I don’t mean to come off as bashing on minorities, but I absolutely hate it when any piece of entertainment drastically changes itself to cater specifically to minorities. Lift my ban, and just lock that page down so that it’s for staff only and that my political beliefs can never find their way into it. I want to contribute, but with me having a mental disability and how much the media tries to favour minority groups, I take it very personal to the point I come off as hating on diversity in general. I don’t hate diversity as a whole, only when it’s handled wrong.

"I have X" is not and will never be a get out of jail free card here.

In addition, you're pretty clearly demonstrating that this ban will not actually result in you modifying your behaviour, as well as the fact you are trying to dictate terms to us.

So no, for the time being your ban will not be lifted.

~ Deadbeatloser 99 So you believe I am playing the excuses card? I only threw in that political stuff regarding women and minority groups because I got alienated and overreacted as a result, because it is getting altered to please overzealous feminists. I overreacted and threw the political stuff because I know how much the media overglorifies minority groups. I support gender equality, women’s rights, and rights for people of colour and the LGBT community, yet you instead believe I’m nothing but vulgar towards minority groups. My problem is not just online, but also in real life.

After reading this, I request my ban get lifted, but due to the “no politics” rule and my beliefs being very extreme, and while I want to reconcile and do promise to keep political subjects out, I’m just going to cut ties with TV Tropes and just stick to reading.

[up] No, I think your ban will remain. You aren't trustworthy. To say that you're in favor of equality but against equal representation is oxymoronic.

~Aneyh: I'm afraid that promising to do better isn't good enough. You need to demonstrate understanding of what is adequate context. Taking the examples I cited previously, please write an adequate description for Trickster Twins in Characters.Arthur. I'll leave aside those appearance tropes because they're garbage anyway.

~Avenger09: Our requirement that you use the help topic has nothing to do with punishing you. Rather, if we release your suspension and you keep making mistakes while editing the wiki, you will be permanently banned. We'd like to prevent that if possible. I looked at your posts in the Help with English topic, and there are enough errors to make me concerned. There are also errors in the post you just made.

  • "Grammar" is not a proper noun and should not be capitalized.
  • "when the chances of what I type there are entirely at the whims of whoever else reads them." You omitted a phrase, such as "the chances of what I type there being read", but honestly I'm not sure what you meant to say.

You also seem confused about what the English thread is for. We make the thread available as a courtesy, to allow other tropers to give you proofreading advice, but the end goal is that you improve to the point where you can write well without help. Writing correctly on the wiki is your responsibility, as it is everyone else's.

I understand that my suspension was due to a combination of complaint-edits (on the "Captain America: Civil War" YMMV page), and indentation errors. In other worse, I edited impulsively, without doing much proof-reading, or thinking over whether my edits were necessary or appropriate. That was childish and selfish of me and I am more than old enough to know better.

I would love to be able to contribute to this site again. Over the months I've amassed several (positive) observations about subtle details in various movies and books that I would love to be able to share on Fridge Brilliance and Wild Mass Guessing. If allowed to edit again, I will treat my edits seriously and objectively, proofread them, and double-check guidelines.

Thank you for your time, and for explaining to me why I was suspended so I could move towards correcting my behavior. And thank you for all the time and effort you all put into this site.

"being posted" is the missing phrase. Sometimes when I write, I sound it out in my head and think I've typed it in.

Banning somebody because of honest mistakes seems disproportionate. We are not machines. We are going to make errors. Sometime we will realize and correct it, sometimes others will correct them first.

In my opinion, It's also not very fair to give us occasional blunderers the same punishment that trolls and other troublemakers get. Their completely different.

Side Note- I typed the previous post and this one using my PS 4, so the interface has a extra layer of complexity that a keyboard doesn't have. I'm not denying I make errors just that sometimes its for different reasons.

[up]You use a PS4 to edit the wiki? ... Okay, whatever.

Our policy is clear. Proficient English is a requirement of editing, period. If you can't meet that requirement, you can't edit. Your contributions aren't worth it if other people have to trail behind you fixing your mistakes. This applies to everything: indentation, use of markup, example context.

Hi, it says I've been suspended?

Only thing I can think of is I deleted some spammy posts by someone who looked like they were promoting a video series and Entry Pimping it to the point of Square Peg Round Trope. Did I delete something I shouldn't have then?

~Sally Shears: Sorry, I think I missed your appeal. What you wrote sounds good, and I appreciate your desire to work constructively on the wiki. We take style seriously, even as we try to be informal in terms of how we write. Thus, I have a couple of things I'd like to make sure you understand, and then we can let you get back to editing.

  • YMMV subpages are for subjective tropes and audience reactions, but that doesn't mean they're for you to complain or vent. While the context of such examples may be subjective, the examples themselves should be written without sounding like you're trying to persuade the reader or get something off your chest. You may also not argue with or contest an example by writing stuff beneath it.
  • Fridge and WMG subpages are fun, but they aren't our core purpose, and it doesn't matter what you contribute there if you're making problems elsewhere.
  • Example Indentation in Trope Lists: When writing multiple examples for a trope (or for a work on a trope page), all of them should be indented beneath the trope name. Do not ever put an example after the trope and then indent additional ones.

Got it?

~Fighteer,

I think I've got it. Just to be sure...

1.) The YMMV page is not a forum. It's for listing opinions held by large groups of viewers/readers. Appropriate: "Many readers and critics find Edward's behavior towards Bella to border on abuse, because (short list of examples)." NOT appropriate: "Edward is abusive, because (long rant)."

2.) Asking to be let back into TV tropes so I can WMG is like Tom Paris asking to be let back into Starfleet so he can make more holonovels for the crew. Not relevant to the main mission.

3.) Proofread and use the Preview button, and double check Indentation guidelines. (When I don't, I find that's when I tend to have indentation problems.)

I think I've got it. (I hope.)

And thanks again for your time.

~Keybreak: Is that an appeal or are you just self-reporting about your feelings? Congrats on "discovering your psychic powers". I'm sorry that we're "too SJW" for you here. Also, talking about killing someone is not something we tolerate, and nobody here is out to get you. Did I cover everything?

~Sally Shears: You seem to get it, so I'll let you go. Also remember that if someone contests your edits, you should discuss it with them.

~NOYB: For an Edit War on Recap.Steven Universe S 4 E 10 Stevens Dream. First, you should already know how to properly indent examples; second, you should already know about natter. I mean, you've only made fifteen thousand edits on our site.

I wasn't meaning to Edit War, just to add in a valid example of the trope that was improperly removed once two months before that. If the other troper had removed it again, I would have talked with them about it. I don't normally indent points under other points; in this case, I did it naturally because it was an expansion of the previous point revealed by a later episode of the show. I don't mind if the example is indented differently than that.

I was unaware at the time that the example had also been re-added by Chrome Fyra.
