I want the Sonic The Heghog series to go back to Shadow/06, even SATAM level darkness after the light and fluffy Secrert Rings, Riders, and Colors.

I am completely, utterly, and thoroughly done with Sola Sonica and 2D

<Mod Hat ON>

This thread is about Sonic. Not about what a bad idea the thread is.

Meta-comments are not funny, or constructive and making one doesn't do anything but make you look childish.

Considering how well that went last time they attempted that, how would they make it dark but still Sonic, since it seems Sonic games tend to go badly with the fanbase whenever they stray from the norm?

I admit, I did enjoy Shadow The Hedgehog...and some of Sonic 06. I mean, the storylines were interesting, and despite not feeling that Sonic-like, I couldn't help but be entertained by them.

{Not the value of the topic. The topic. —Madrugada}

Personally I think this is a bit uneccesary and did not lead Sonic down a good path.

Never played Sonic '06, but Shadow The Hedgehog was actually pretty fun, if hammy.

It's not so much the darkness of a plot that interests me, but a game having enough of a plot to have meaningful development between levels. I think the Adventure games were a good balance in that regard; a lot of the later Sonic games I've played feel more like a grind.

Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?

{Not the tone of the OP. —Madrugada}

Okay. What's wrong with Lighter and Fluffier Sonic, particularly when those Lighter and Fluffier Sonic games (Unleashed, Rush, looks like Colors and 4 will be as well) have been the better ones in recent years? Sonic stories seem to work best when they're cartoony and not taking themselves completely seriously.

I don't think it'll matter either way. Even if this proposed idea does turn out to be good, people will complain. LOUDLY.

I was serious in the last thread on this (for a while at least) I'll be serious in this thread too. (for a while at least.)

Sat AM was a good example on how you make a good Darker and Edgier program while still keeping things appropriate for the kiddies.

The question is how to make it work. But first of all, we've got two potential settings: Mobius and Earth. Only we don't. Why? Because Sonic Team has pretty much put its foot down on the matter: we're not going back to Mobius. We're not using Mobius. Mobius, in the direction we are going in, does not exist. So, that leaves us with the current continuity.

There are the usual tools of Darker and Edgier; Deconstruction, Fridge Horror, and introducing a new element and villain. Or, making the old villain, or his dragon, a lot more intimidating. So, any ideas?

I have to admit I was afraid of where this thread would go. Glad to see Madrugada got her teeth into it.

EDIT: I mentioned Sat AM as an example of how to make a kid-oriented yet dark program. I also neglected to mention a far more important point: its a good example of how to make a Darker and Edgier setting believable and engaging. Which other attempts seem to have failed at to varying degrees.

The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.

One particullar Frige Horror i want to see is the question of what happened to Mighty. I think he died gorily.
