Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword are, in my opinion, perfectly fine games. They do however suffer from a very, very slow start, what with all the forced tutorials.

Breath of the Wild was so refreshing in that regard. "You want a tutorial? Fine, press B to climb and shit. Now get out of this cave and save the world already".

Breath of the Wild had an incredibly long tutorial. The entire Great Plateau is one. But it's such an open-ended, enjoyable experience that you barely even notice it's one big tutorial.

Only other game I can think of with such a well-integrated "feels like you're already playing the game" tutorial like that is Metroid Prime.

No, Zelda game is bad (unless you count the CD-I games), but all of them have their individual issues.

It's already been pointed out, but TP's tutorial and pacing at times are it's worst features, but it has the best dungeons and the most consistent bosses.

I kinda forgot how small Koholint Island is compared to other settings in the series.

I'd still argue that SS is bad. I don't think I've ever hated the controls of a game more than when I played SS.

Conversely, many people (including myself) feel that Skyward Sword’s controls are very simple and easy to use.

When I picked up Skyward Sword I struggled against the controls constantly, until I was about halfway through the Fire Sanctuary, then things started to click, and I had little trouble after that.

Skyward Sword has a decent speedrunning scene. I recall one of the runners was at AGDQ a few years back and he said the motion controls are not nearly as bad as a lot of people think.

To be quite honest I think people blow them way out of proportion when the game has much bigger issues.

Fi made me miss Navi.

Honestly, even without comparison to Fi Navi isn't even that annoying.

Thank you! "Navi is annoying" is a bad meme that got way out of hand. I agree that her frequently chiming in to remind you of your next objective can be mildly irritating at times, especially since Saria's Song does the exact same thing, but it's super easy to ignore.

And, frankly? I don't think even Fi is that bad.

I find Fi's autotuned voice blips to be oddly soothing.

And also, there's another game where the tutorial level makes you feel that you're already playing the game: Mega Man X.

Twilight Princess has a special place in my heart, but honestly, that's true for every mainline Zelda game I've played. I loved what Skyward Sword did with the setting and the mythology, it's just that the motion controls were maybe a little too ambitious for the hardware, perhaps? I remember walking around with a sore elbow after the last Ghirahim fight because of the start-stop motion needed for the sword thrust.

It's been fun.

There are a couple of points in the first two dungeons where you're just walking along and Navi stops you dead in your tracks and talks for several text boxes, and the text seems to move much slower than usual. Those moments are really bad, but outside of those instances she rarely bothers you at all.

Maybe it's a function of when you played the game; I was only eight when Ocarina of Time came out, so I needed her tutorials, since I'd never played a game of that scope before.

It's been fun.

The tutorial thing is kind of annoying, but imo the biggest issue with Fi is that she's boring. The game tries to set up some emotional moments with her and Link, but...they don't work. She's just sort of detached and impersonal the whole way through.

Midna was the best partner character by far, because she had a clear arc and character, a relationship that slowly built with Link, and it was all presented with good pacing. And this is coming from someone who thinks Twilight Princess is good, but not great.

I unironically love that Tatl mocks you for not knowing the weaknesses to Ocarina enemies and was sad when they took that out of the 3DS version.

Tatl is a much better partner than Navi in general. She actually has something of a character arc and while I maintain that Navi isn't that annoying, I prefer the bell sound Tatl makes over "HEY LISTEN!!".

Yeah, Tatl was pretty good. She's a symptom of Majora's Mask as a whole going with the expanded characterization and deeper plot route in comparison to Ocarina. They knew the main game would be short and they knew they had limited development time, so they were smart in focusing their scope.

My biggest issue with the remake was the Zora swimming. The one time water levels are actually fun in games, they had to take it away...

I don't get it. Zora have always been portrayed as super lithe and acrobatic in the water, so why make Zora Link's swimming so stumpy?

I liked Fi well enough, though her percentage joke gimmick did get pretty old after a while. She was definitely a huge downgrade from Midna, though.

Honestly, if we get Twili in Breath of the Wild 2 like some of the imagery seems to hint, I hope we get a Twili champion and not just because I want to see the result of Ruto:Mipha::Midna:???.

It's been fun.

So I'm looking through my copy of Hyrule Historia again. Looking at the timeline graph they have, it looks hilariously like they just decided to group the timelines by the boxart. Admittedly this is justified with Windwaker because the next two games are actual sequels to them, but they shoved all the nineties art into one timeline.
