Because Kinkajou told me to.
So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?
My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.
I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

Hot Take: I'd have preferred it if it had stayed a Jak and Daxter sequel.

Mega Man fanatic extraordinaireHonestly I'd argue that dark stories for the sake of being dark are worse than happiness for the sake of that.
An undeserved happy ending, at worst, is underwhelming while an equally undeserved downer ending can ruin a whole work.

This song needs more love. They can both ruin a whole work, there's a whole spectrum of factors and degrees involved as to what makes an ending bad beyond it being a downer or not. I think I might agree that a poorly-handled downer ending has the potential to be worse though.

Also too saccharine. It’s like that level of happiness that makes you feel like your teeth are rotting & you get the diabeetus.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."A good ending that doesn't make sense...reminds me of this:
Bad endings that come out of nowhere...reminds me of, well, the entire Outer Limits series. There's a reason Cruel Twist Ending used to be called "Outer Limits Twist".

Disgusted, but not surprisedI can think of many MANY works that are ruined with their downer ending but I honestly can’t think of a single one ruined by a happy ending outside of the Gecko Ending and Adventure Continues canceled works that rushed an ending.
So the JP version of Opera Omina got updated with a new story chapter and the new recruitable character is General Leo from VI. Really wasnt expecting him.
On the western side, Cid's Lost Chapter went up today and the Lann & Raynn character event should be next week
GOH! JII! RAH!Yeah, an unearned happy ending is mediocre or just falls flat; but an unearned downer ending tends to straight up ruin the work altogether.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Lightning never strikes twice, you know?
New theme music also a boxI think Tactics is the only game in the series with an actual bleak ending that’s not a cliffhanger
GOH! JII! RAH!That game ends with Ramza and his sister riding off into the sunset.
Which might be a hallucination for all we know.
I know XIV went with a bleaker ending for Ramza, but at the same time had him and Delita still friends.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Tactics actually ends with Delita murdering the woman he loves in self defense, clutching his bleeding gut, asking what his estranged best friend, who may or may not be dead, got out of it all.
And XIV is like lol fuck all that sad shit they're all just spirits who meet in heaven after all its cool
you're the real zodiac brave player

And Ultima is a part mechanical angel fish thingy thats just a alien Sin Eater-esque Anthropormorphic Magic Spell turned Primal and none of her Lucavi are demons. Just her making mockeries of Voidsent.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Tactics is the one with a huge grudge against escapism as I recall
New theme music also a boxThat was Tactics Advance, the sequel.
The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."Just FYI Matsuno has confirmed that Ramza and Alma lived and had other adventures multiple times.
I've encountered unearned happy endings before but most of them were symptoms of greater problems throughout the story - for instance, a loathsome protagonist being fabulously rewarded for basic decency.
Unearned downers by contrast are more likely to totally blindside you, and can derail what was up to then very strong.
The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."Matsuno also wrote the Ivalice storyline in XIV.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Since Lightning was brought up I feel like mentioning I dislike that guy who teamed up with her sister in the second XIII game.
His hair sucks.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Noel was....okay. Not bad, just okay.
Also getting around to doing Cid's LC in Opera Omina, its kinda hilariously cathartic to see Sazh, Yang, Galuf, and Jecht call out Cid for being a dick to Shera.

GOH! JII! RAH!But his haircut is so boring.
Not one cool person has had hair like that. Only dull boring people have brown hair.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
Well it’s just one of those critically acclaimed games that is considered in the upper tier of “That’s da good shit” classics.
