Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

Pretty sure the assets or whatever for 8 don't exist anymore. So in order to port it they'd have to rebuild it from the ground up, like what happened with KH 1 HD. Except, 8 wouldn't make nearly as much money as KH did, so not worth the effort. Might be some other issues as well.

But yeah, as far as mainline titles go its those ones. Counting spinoffs, theres also XV Pocket Edition, World of Final Fantasy, a Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon, and Crystal Chronicles if I'm not mistaken.

Can't they sort of reverse engineer their own source from the PS 1 or PC versions?

I'm confused that they have the assets for both 8's successor and predecessor, but not 8 itself.

Why did that one get lost in the shuffle?

But IV is so popular they made a sequel to it

and it's probably the 2nd most ported and remade FF

IV's sequel is "helped" by the fact that Iv's plot isn't all that good to begin with. It's pretty simple to begin with, and fine for it's time, but the sequel doesn't feel like it's shitting all over your childhood to begin with.

I actually like IV TAY more than IV. I also like Advent Children Complete, but don't care about generally more loved Crisis Core.

The way I've always put it is that IV feels like a skeleton of a more elaborate, fleshed out script that doesn't actually exist. It has some interesting themes and ideas, but nothing is really fleshed out enough to have much impact.

IV has Rydia tho, probably the best summoner in the series not just because holy WOW is her design amazing as an adult/late teen but also because she spent a lot of her life actually living with the Eidolons after Leviathan "ate" her, which is all sorts of cool

i might be slightly biased

not just because holy WOW is her design amazing as an adult/late teen

It's a shame she trades her personality for the design. Adult Rydia is way more bland than her younger self.

I feel like removing Genesis from Crisis Core, or at least lessening his importance to just being a baddie that Zack killed before VII, would make for a better game.

Well it would, but it'd also cut down the game's length by 2 thirds and leave it in a weird narrative hang up where not a single thing gets resolved.

IV isn't very popular though. They just kept making stuff for it in the 2000's because the old staff who worked on it liked it and considered it the "standard" for FF, having learned from making the first three games.

IV's sequel is "helped" by the fact that Iv's plot isn't all that good to begin with. It's pretty simple to begin with, and fine for it's time, but the sequel doesn't feel like it's shitting all over your childhood to begin with.

I can't really agree with that. I don't particularly care for IV and never played it as a kid, but TAY's plot is so bad that I'm pretty sure it only doesn't get more shit because barely anyone cares enough about IV to be offended. Too much of it just a blatant retread of the original game, to the point the characters point it out, and the villain is terrible, I'd say maybe even worse than Genesis, though not as annoying. They also somehow gave some old characters like Rydia less personality than they had before. They only good point is that some of the new characters are alright.

I do see people speaking fondly of IV, but it's mostly older SNES-era players who grew up with it, so there's likely some nostalgia involved (not to disregard any of their opinions because of it, but it is a factor).

Also play the PC or DS versions. Graphics aside, it's the only translation that doesn't borrow from the SNES or PX censorship/truncated translation.

The PSP version was weird because even though it still used the weird PSX and GBA translations it had modern DS terms like Feymarch in there.

IV's love has a bit of a generation gap in there. It was the first RPG to really try to tell a sprawling, character driven operatic story instead of just shunting you from one quest to the next. A bit of Seinfeld Is Unfunny is inevitable.

So here are some things about the XV novel Dawn to the Future. Luna came back with Daemon powers, Bahamut was to be the final boss, and his goal was to cull humanity via aniihilation. Also that he's actually pretty finicky on what he desires since Fate "is the Whims of the Gods" or rather Fate is to the Whim of one God(Bahamut).

It also adds a Both Sides Have a Point in regards to Somnus and Ardyns actions, though Somnus was motivated by jealously despite him and eventually Imprisoned!Ardyn realizing it would never work trying to save everyone.

Also Aera did indeed receive the vision of Ardyn as King, which means it was a Frame-Up the entire time.

Bahamut also tried to wipe out all life during the Gods war back them, but the other Gods took the Teraflare hit. Because the novel has Ardyn decide to defy his fate(with the idea him accepting it is what lead to the game) Bahamut now seeks to use a Daemon turned Luna against her will to empower his next Teraflare with the Starscourge so the Other Gods cant stop it this time.

Evil Bahamut is official, huh? I do believe thats a first for the series (non-sentient summons like in VII don't count, and primal Bahamut in XIV is basically like Sin to my understanding, and not at all like the original Bahamut in Eorzea - lacks the agency to be evil).
