Because Kinkajou told me to.
So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?
My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.
I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

I've noticed Spoony's Final Fantasy reviews aren't very well received on this thread. What's the deal?
Edited by superboy313 on Feb 24th 2019 at 12:59:39 AM
He was a Caustic Critic basically and some of his complaints felt like they were a bit too mean-spirited, or just plain silly. I associate him with a lot of the cynical attitude towards JRPG conventions that started to pop up around the mid to late 2000's, along with LP'ers like The Dark Id (who's chilled out quite a bit since then, thankfully). I don't think that attitude was entirely baseless, but it got to be a bit much.
That being said some people grossly overexaggerate how much influence his stuff has these days. Do I think he may have turned people away from FF 8 and influenced the reception of the game for a while? Certainly. But FFVIII was always a more controversial entry in the series from what I understand and many people who don't care for the game these days don't cite Spoony or any of his talking points. In other words I don't think he's very relevant anymore and hasn't been for years.
Cause Spoony doesn't really offer any real insight or useful criticism
He's basically whining Aesthetics, trying to do the whole snark thing while acting like he's being forced at gun point to play something. overuse of angry hyperbole
Essentially He's reviews are trapped in an era of generational angst that has not held up. Blind subjective hatred with little substance to back it up.
and frankly despite the ones that are rather ABRASIVE with their opinions here in the thread... none of them have come close to acting like You DESERVED to die for daring to like a video game they didn't.
IE I quote " My fans need to hunt down FFX fans and KILL THEM!!!"
Spoony whole Schtick that propelled him into the limelight was He'd attack popular but not flagship aspects of the Fandom. 'but he'd never dare attack the sacred cows VII and VI'
VIII was basically after VII when it came to FF Fandoms... atleast till FFX 'IX is of course lost in the shuffle of the next console wave'
and a large chunk of his viewpoint was well the Western side of the fanbase, Thats who he was playing too so the mass majority at the time would guys who played I, IV and VI, and then the PS generation who came in majorly with VII and VIII

In fact I remember that he specifically said that he liked VII in his review of VIII.
Whenever I see Spoony's quotes show up on this wiki I tilt my head because I've never seen a single one of his videos.
Although I think I can credit him with popularizing one thing very deserving of widespread acclaim: MOTHERFUCKER SUPLEXED A TRAIN!

I remember in his FFXIII review he vowed to find whoever made the game and kill them.
I still maintain that XIII is not the terrible piece of shit many people make it out to be.
XIII is flawed but great. I complained about the battle system a lot back then, and maintain most of those complaints... It's weird that it strikes a balance between "Plays itself" and "Easy to lose if you're not paying attention"... But I will never call it a bad game at all.
I do agree that FFXIII is no way a bad game. But like I said before it is surreal to me seeing so much praise for it nowadays.
Speaking of Spoony, here's how he vented his rage over failing at Dark Souls:

So much for being an "Old school gamer"

I haven't seen anyone particularly praising FFXIII either, to be fair; it's not a bad game, but it's pretty mediocre by FF standards. Then again, as is often discussed here, there's been so much re-evaluation of the games lately that maybe it's rated higher than others now.
Also, I don't really know who this Spoony guy is, but he seems like a tool. Either he really hates the FF games and then just shouldn't play them anyway, or he's playing up the negative aspects and his reactions; either way, seems to me he's making a thing of being angry to attract viewers. Also, anyone who gets that mad at Dark Souls (again, assuming he's not playing it up) shouldn't be playing Dark Souls.

Apparently Spoony loved 6. Infact he owes his whole name to Edward from 4. I think. I dunno, he barely mentions 4 apart from having stickers of Edward and Tellah on his bookcase sometimes.
Besides we all know the best character in 4 is Rydia.
Acting insanely angry over something and trying to tell jokes over giving constructive criticism was every internet reviewer from about 2008-2012. Because they were all copying AVGN and the Nostalgia Critic (who was copying AVGN). Spoony wasn't anything special in that regard, it was just what was popular at the time.
I never watched Spoony's videos but I couldn't help but hear the drama that came from him
New theme music also a boxI guess I just on the bandwagon back then but my brother liked it and I want to play XIII to see if I liked it. It could also be that many people are getting older and that we are getting better reviews from other people.
"We are just like Irregular Data. And that applies to you too, Ri CO. And as for you, Player... your job is to correct Irregular Data."Nostalgia Critic (who was copying AVGN)
What makes you say that?
De Romanīs, lingua Latina gloriosa non fuī.Frozen Wolf 2: "At least the forums here don't have people threatening others for liking something they don't like"
Not anymore on my case. Not that anyone cares, given I'm still avoided like the plague, but... Needed correction.
There are other kinds of problems in this community, but it's not worth (or cool) discussing it here in this thread.

Growing up, it's like a civil war, don't turn away, it's something you can't ignore...> There are other kinds of problems in this community, but it's not worth discussing here in this thread.
Sounds like your blaming other people a little too heavily I think
New theme music also a boxMy main problem with XIII is that almost all the game's scenes feel like they come from a stilted japanese soap opera.
Not saying that the Nostalgia Critic is an exact rip-off of AVGN's style, but AVGN made his videos early enough, and he got popular enough that him and the early people that did exactly rip him off pretty much established the whole "angrily make fun of bad media" thing as a trend on Youtube.
Spoony's original You Tube videos, which includes his first few vids on FVIII, are really nothing like AVGN. It's comedy more than deep analysis but it's not ARGH RAGE comedy.
Like, WHY would you give a lamp with the devil in it to your new recruits? The game itself warns you about saving instead of Cid. Cid really is the greatest villain of FFVIII.
Also Spoony liked FFXII. He recommended it to me on his forum. Noah was cool by me.

> Like, WHY would you give a lamp with the devil in it to your new recruits?
maybe it was test to weed out stupid recruits?
New theme music also a boxMost optional content in FF doesn't have a lot of context and VII and VIII had a whole lot of random ideas thrown in for the sake of having them.
The magical lamp housing Satan was probably one of them.
Geez its almost like FF constantly gives out items that should kill you if you didn't happen to be the the player party
Then again The lamp has a GF in it, and Squall had already beat one before and Gfs are VIII's source of power
Its a weird way of saying here is an emergency power boost
If its the same fake-"HD" smoothing filter I'm thinking, its an optional ugly-as-sin filter in the Megaman X collections too and I hate it. Those types of filters should be outlawed because they're always ugly.
