I came across this item today (Maturity Is Serious Business) and was surprised that it didn't have any on-page examples, even though it's not in Definition-Only Pages or No On-Page Examples. It's supposed to be about the tendency of fandoms to value serious stories over comedies because, and I quote the laconic, Serious = "Mature". With such a general idea, it's not surprising that the item currently has only 28 wicks or that someone unilaterally added a subverted example in 2013 (even though this is a YMMV) and no one noticed it.

So I started looking for more info and came across a few things. First, a 2022 TRS entry, which was rejected because it was submitted as Not Thriving, which technically it isn't. And second, the original TLP draft, which isn't up to today's standards, but mentions that the reason it doesn't have on-page examples is because it's a fandom trope intended to be used exclusively on Troper Tales, a defunded part of the wiki.

Yeah, not a very promising prospect. Any ideas on what to do with it?

The whole article seems pretty bad to me. Maybe this is anecdotal, but I've spent my adult life in fandoms (for comedy shows, admittedly), and I've never come across the attitude that this trope claims is so widespread.

It feels like anything valuable in the trope is already on Comedy Ghetto.

Maturity Is Serious Business should be added to TRS as Not Thriving and propose merging with Comedy Ghetto.

Yeah, it doesn't really fit with current trope standards, and Comedy Ghetto makes it a bit redundant anyway.

Well, my guess was that the trope was about the perception that serious works are more mature. And that, as years of cleanup of tropes like Complete Monster and other "darkness"-related tropes has shown, is very much a common mindset.

[up]You're right, but that's still pretty redundant with Comedy Ghetto.

I think that one would only be able to discuss the "comedy" aspect, which is a problem because the maturity aspect is often more akin "children works are not for (wannabe) adults" rather than about comedy.

Maybe we can move those to True Art Is Angsty?

Also, the concept isn't about angst so it doesn't fit into that trope.

As it happens, the drafter, ~Raven Wilder, is still active, but I don't know if they can help.

This trend certainly exists in fandoms, but this page doesn't say much about it. If some fans don't like a comic relief making jokes, it might be because they don't like the jokes rather than some standard of being serious. The title is misleading ("Serious Stories Are Mature" would work better). I would be fine with cutting or merging.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.
