moving misplaced/disambiguated tropes to the correct namespace vs. deleting them - official policy?

hello

1. i have seen a lot of editors outright delete misplaced tropes (e.g.: non-YMMV in a YMMV page or a Character trope in the workspace page).

when i inquire about this, i am told by said editors that it is not their responsibility to move the trope.

it does not appear to be official policy, but one mod did weigh in that they should be moving the tropes to the correct page

2. not sure if this should warrant its own thread, but i feel it is in a similar vein: i notice TRS cleanup would often delete a trope that has been disambiguated instead of selecting the right trope

in the past, TRS editors would often just say "trope was cut" which was not helpful when it turns out there was a replacement trope

i have not joined a lot of TRS cleanup threads, but in my experience, there are often enough context clues to figure out which one is which, but TRS editors can weigh in on this

some TRS editors have told me they do not want to accumulate "trope is misplaced" notifiers, but if i recall, something done in good faith for TRS would not warrant a ban even if these notifiers are accumulated, right?

i notice some TRS editors would leave a canned reason with a link to the cut trope and a "do not readd" while others would only post "trope was cut/disambiguated"

the former is far more helpful than the latter, but some TRS editors have similarly told me that it is not their responsibility and that anyone else can do it on their own time, but canned edit reasons are copy-paste, right? i see no issue in making a "(linked trope) was disambiguated, please see the trope page before you readd" canned message as part of policy

Speaking from experience, a lot of the time it's more work than it's worth to try to figure out which trope to replace a TRS'd trope with, especially with older tropes that got ZCE'd a lot.

No, a good faith effort doesn't mean that bad cleanup isn't still bad. We have an entire thread discussing the issue of people being sloppy and lazy with TRS cleanup, which does include moving things that should have been cut. Minimizing misuse takes precedent over salvaging examples. It's not about racking up notifiers; it's about not leaving a worse mess. If editors genuinely cannot figure out what to do they shouldn't asked to come up with a solution anyway.

In some cases, sure. The context is obvious. But it isn't always and we'd rather have a clean wiki than examples moved all willy-nilly.

Also a lot of trsed tropes end up having examples that straight up don't fit a valid trope, because that might be part of why they're tred in the first place

The bare "trope was cut/disambiguated" is still good information to future editors. You're suggesting a more descriptive linking of the un-trope (so someone can click it from edit history) and an additional note not to put it back, right? The former would save a step to those curious enough to check, but is the argument for the latter that too many users are confused and won't heed "trope was cut/disambiguated" on its own?

Like I mentioned on the general policy thread, such a notifier would require re-doing every time you do an example since the auto fill is gone. Unless we get a custom option, it's not realistic to ask everyone to do it all the time.

[up]x4: which makes sense; i remember inquiring and it turns out commented-out examples still show up as wicks

that said, my problem isnt with the instances where the trope is completely cut; for examples that can be clearly moved and are not under TRS action, they should be moved instead of deleted, and for the latter, i'm fine with the tropes getting cut, but a better edit reason would work

[up][up]for the latter, yes — using "trope was disambiguated (link here)" instead of "was cut/disambiguated" would be far more clear

[up]hmm, let me see if cut and paste is too annoying; i do not mean that passive-aggressively, but i am used to having a canned reason placed in notepad and the copy-paste board, esp. since im used to this process:

find wick
delete trope
paste edit reason

I used auto fill pretty much exclusively, and using copy and paste doesn't work if I already have something important copied. Like the example I'm trying to move to a new page.

ahh, got it. i generally have a document open for copy-pasting edit reasons as needed in case i need to pause to move an example or page. obv that isnt for everyone, YMMV
