Visual Editor Feedback

Go To

Another programmer created this custom editor some years ago and it never got finished due to other bigger projects the company had and lack of man power. Now I'm dusting off the cobwebs and trying to get a basic version out to everyone as soon as possible. It's currently in the beta-testing phase and our engineers and moderators are the current testers.

We will use this thread as the main hub for reporting bugs and requesting more features for the editor. Check the Formatting Rules for a list of everything that can be done on TVTropes.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

  • the Visual Editor is on about 85% of pages due to compatibility issues with certain markup and certain markup combinations. We will be working on getting it to 100% of pages over time.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_03_15_at_124418pm.png https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2023_10_20_at_100726_am.png

CURRENTLY KNOWN ISSUES:

  • Putting wikiformat as a caption displays it verbatim. Switching to Source and back fixes it.
  • Adding indent on plain text turns it into a quote markup
  • Missing common markup buttons:
    • Indexing ([[index]][[/index]])
    • Redirects
    • Tables
    • Small text ([-text-] and [--text--])

    Fixed Issues
  • When clicking on links it doesn’t always show correct link until you click “ok” or “cancel” then the correct one appears. Have to click cancel or okay twice to close.
  • You can't add pothole (link) into an image.
  • Keeping increasing indent makes text progressively smaller even though on the wiki only 3 sizes in quotes are possible. Switching to Source and back fixes the text size.
  • If a quote is at the end of input, you have to switch to Source to type after it.
  • Applying both Bold then Italics only saves Italics. It works correctly if it's Italics then Bold.
    • Partially overlapping Bold and Italics is the other way around. If Bold then Italics, it works correctly. If Italics then Bold, the overlapping section uses only Italics.
  • Folders aren't properly spaced
  • Open/close all folders is full length of screen with same padding as regular folders
  • -- doesn’t convert to — emdash
  • Need option in profile to set TV Tropes editor on or off by default
  • Switching editor off and on can erase progress sometimes. (should be fixed. report if it does again)
  • Folders won’t open and close
  • Can’t click after or before folders if there isn’t text already there.
  • 500 error when trying to save after inserting folder
  • Duplicate toolbar floats over current toolbar
  • Clicking Visual Editor & Toolbar text changes button but does not activate or deactivate javascript
  • Folder control works but doesn’t appear as a folder until you refresh editor
  • Special characters don’t convert properly when sent to htmltosource.php.
  • Spoiler markup works but is invisible.
  • Label notes are being inserted incorrectly and existing label notes won’t work.
  • Spoiler opens more than one after saving
  • Strike formatting, Headings 4 and above, floatbox formatting and right to left have been removed since they aren't supported
  • If labelnote is at the end of the line, you can't type after it. You'll be typing into either note display or note contents.
  • Pop up boxes for all modals take up the full width of the screen.
  • Night vision text blends in. Bg should be dark.
  • The note for img modal says "Images should go through Image Pickin' before being added to a wiki article". Adding is free but changing or removing an image without approval is forbidden.
  • Removed maximize and faulty “check spelling” buttons
  • Folders don’t work on every-other activation of the editor.
  • Putting folders in folders causes 500 error. (Prevented from inserting)
  • Folder icon doesn’t change when opened.
  • fixed link modal showing Type and source editor switch not parsing links correctly.

The visual editor is consistently screwing up line breaks for me

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_03_22_220849.png

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_03_22_222333.png

I hit enter on the VE and it indented properly with new a bulletpoint, but checking the page it not only didn't properly break up the line, it also removed the next line break. I tried fixing it with the VE but it keeps putting the asterisks on the previous line despite showing otherwise

For some better visual clarity, here's what it looks like in the Visual Editor:

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_03_22_225505.png

Here I added new examples under Dead Cells and Hades for Pain & Gain. It appears to be indented and broken up properly, but according to the source:

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_03_22_225530.png

It doesn't appear to actually break up the lines when you press enter despite adding new bulletpoints visually.

The visual editor doesn't seem to work on mobile. Here's my proof:

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_03_25_20_08_26_330_comandroidchrome.jpg

Now, I understand why you may wanna get it working on PC first but I thought I'd let you know.

It does work on mobile. The monospace filter also disappears so it just didn’t activate properly. Sometimes that happens due to a Java Script timing issue, just refresh and turn it on and off again. If it still doesn’t work then list your browser.

Editted the Guilt-Free Extermination War page to correct formatting. It showed, in addition to the edit i made, that i had deleted the word “justified”, the quotations and colon around it and moved them forwards or put them back in or whatever its trying to say.

P Kofthelibrary,

It’s just saying it removed the space after the colon. As the confirm changes modal says, it will remove or add spaces to make it look like the live page.

Editted the page for https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/YMMV/TheSurprisingAdventuresOfAGlaceonInUnova To move the Stoic Woobie YMMV from the main page to there. When i did so, it deleted a pair of square brackets and put them back in exactly afterwards.

If it didn’t actually change anything or is only a space correction then it isn’t worth reporting.

[up][up] This edit having the brackets highlighted is possibly a rare behavior of the edit history treating "]]" and "]] new line break" as words. Maybe the visual editor added/removed an invisible linebreak symbol, but it's more a question for the history to not highlight these than something to the editor.

It looks like the Visual Editor doesn't show up on some pages.

Yes the editor only shows up on pages that don’t have conversion problems. It currently works on about 85% of pages. Over time we will solve more of the issues to get it on more pages. For 10% of that 15% it’s only minor issues that a mod or engineer can check and potentially activate the editor for others.

When trying to alphabetize examples in Visual Mode, I've noticed it's very hard to move bulleted lists and/or quotes without messing up the formatting.

EDIT:[down] I'll try to screenshot an example.

Can you be more specific, like with copy-pasting them around? What exactly happens?

Ok, here's a current example: https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_04_03_122757_9.png

If I try to cut and paste it in Visual Mode, it ends up like this: https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_04_03_122839.png

Check to see if it handles commented out lines - Lots of the pages that don't work have them.

I noticed that the visual editor does not appear when editing certain pages (E.G.: The Alleged Computer, Wiki Sandbox, The Spongebob Square Pants Movie, Etc.). Why is that? Do those pages have certain features that currently aren't compatible with the visual editor?

[up] That's correct. Maybe it should be noted in the pinned.

What do you mean by "noted in the pinned"? Is that a feature in the forums or an exclusive feature for engineers?

When editing the page for The Magic Christian in the visual editor, I added a few tropes and therefore links to them. In the preview before confirming the changes, everything looked fine, however they didn't save correctly.

I've since gone back in and fixed the link formatting, so I'll provide a link to the version with the messed up links https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=Film.TheMagicChristian&page=2#edit40381752

That's because you forgot to include the groupname. The modal shows you the correct format you need to put in order for all links to work. If its Main, it will be removed in the markup after the fact, but it still needs to initially know the groupname in order to work.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_04_21_at_34452pm.png

NOTE: I'll add an exception next week that when the display text is the same as the link ill remove the [[link display text]] formatting so the markup will just be the wikiword.

HOTFIX:

  • Creating links now properly creates Wikiwords when the display text is the same as the title of the page.
