Yeah, I would say that BOTW and Tears have too much freedom in some respects. Gating things like the photo memories/dragon tears into two or even three chunks would go a long way toward fixing that.

It's been fun.

I mean I don't see why it doesn't just unlock the memories linearly regardless of which tears you find first.

I would like a dlc to gives a Ganondorf dragon boss battle but this time Ganondorf still has his mind and can do more things in battle and battle with strategy.

Well, that's kind of annoying. The four helmets you can get (that the Sages send you after during the Fifth Sage quest) are modeled after the Divine Beasts, but if you put them on, the avatar of the corresponding Sage will wear the bronze helmets the old Sages wore.

What that implies is that even the Divine Beasts were just Zonai tech to begin with, which annoys me for some reason. At least Breath of the Wild went with the argument that Ganon's break-out and the corruption of the Beasts and Guardians was unexpected. It felt like the Sheikah did the best they could with what they could put together (putting the 120 minigame shrines aside). But if it was all Zonai tech, then it feels like not only did the Zonai have thousands of years to prep for that, it didn't even work.

It's been fun.

Nah, the divine beasts aesthetics are way too similar to other sheikah tech for that to be true

More than likely they were inspired by the masks and powers of the sages

Yeah I think the Zonai and Sheikah are similar in that they are advanced, but are otherwise independent of each other.

And with this being very likely its own continuity now, also possibly whom they were named after. So their names might be Ruta, Rudania, Medoh and Naboris.

Though I have to say that I was a bit dissapointed how lacking the old sages were in individual characterization, with all of them being just exposition machines.

Sad that they don't get scenes with Zelda. The champions in the last game got characterizations because of their proximity to Link.

What's maddening is that it's the same exposition 4 times. They give the exact. same. speech. Changing a few words here and there. Like, was it just too hard to have them cover different aspect of the war?

Or add some additional personality to them. Like giving the Sage of Lightning regret because, even if they weren't directly involved, they did side with Ganondorf, whose lust for power and conquest led him to killing Sophia. A sense of helping to fix the mistake they did.

One thing I noticed, talking to a friend about it - almost all the plot is backstory. It takes until, assuming you do a healthy amount of shrines and so on in each region after you finish the main quest there, 70% of the way through the main game before the story acknowledges that Zelda is in the past, the Demon King is back, and the Zelda illusion is fake - all things the player already knows, and maybe the first thing you learn if you happen to pick up that Tear first off.

But then you spend the rest of the early game following "Zelda" because the game lets you and Link learn that fact as early as having Snowquill gear, without accounting for the possibility at all, storywise.

It's been fun.

Yeah the fact that Link is a silent protagonist and can't acknowledge information that we already know from seeing the tears really hurts the game's storytelling.

Not content in stealing from Xenoblade, now Zelda is ripping off Fire Emblem too. For shame.

I prefer to think the entire game was secretly a coup orchestrated by Purah so that she could become queen. She is effectively Hyrule's leader with Zelda missing after all. Tulin is cool, and Sidon/Riju are bros like always. I always knew Yunobo was evil. Once again Zelda herself has the most interesting story beats, but it's undercut by her not being properly around. Thank goodness last game convinced me to not care about the story. I will admit the Zelda = Light Dragon twist was cool. I was wondering where that dragon came from, and then why it had the Master Sword. Then I got the sword, remembered the dragonification memory, and was actually impressed for a moment.

The ascent to the wind temple was amazing, though I think the lightning dungeon was once again narrowly the best. Fire is arguably the hardest, but more because of the annoying navigation than anything else. Probably the craziest thing I did was make my way up to Thunderhead Island before the main story sent me there (gonna have to look up how to get there properly), then run around the island blind. Even managed to beat the big asshole up there while blind and having to constantly unequip my weapons to avoid the lightning. Gave up eventually because I couldn't figure out what to do, but I did leave a fast travel point, so that came in handy later. Another good point was at the end where I'm trying to figure out where Ganondorf is. So I was doing other stuff in the meantime, including fighting Kohga. Josha pointed me in the direction of a hole I was having trouble finding, where I found final Kohga. Dude was nice enough to tell me the rather obvious location of the G Man. Thanks Yiga Clan. Couldn't have done it without you. Final boss was so much better than BOTW.

I kind of want to go for 100% completion. Definitely won't actually do it, but I'll see how far I get before getting bored. Now to see how to actually play the game, because I'm stubborn and refuse to use vehicles and mechs beyond the bare minimum.

Your preferences are not everyone else's preferences.

I dont find the sky too bad (Though it's bullshit how planes and balloons will just despawn after a while irrespective of battery).

I wish the depth were less annoying? Like yeah it's just Hyrule's height map reversed but feels like every other meter is a long ass climb. And Link climbs so slowly. Sure can use springs and rockets to fasten this but it's _alot_.

I had heard that every lightroot corresponds to a terrestrial shrine, but I didn't realize that that means that every shrine has a lightroot.

Definitely not spending the time down there just to light them all up.

So to me, Ganondorf's backstory. So Ganondorf is born into the Gerudo tribe and made king. As Hyrule is being founded, a lot of Gerudo want to conquer it and take its prosperity for themselves, and Ganondorf is only happy to help them out with it. He could be a great conqueror, ready to rule all of Hyrule! Only problem is, the Gerudo don't really got the numbers, but they are able to control monsters so they pad their numbers with them. Ganondorf becomes particularly successful at capturing and controlling monsters, so he puts together an army of Modulga to smash into Hyrule. Only problem is, they were thwarted by the secret stones, which Ganondorf now wants more than anything.

Ganondorf announces he's going to swear fealty to King Rauru and most Gerudo are relieved. They recognize there is no way to win and if you can't beat 'em join 'em. They look forward to taking part in Hyrule's prosperity and praise Ganondorf for his wise decision. Little do they know it's just a ruse on Ganondorf's part. Ganondorf in preparation continues to recruit and control monsters and comes into contact with a Phantom that is able to take on people's forms, which he takes control of. He uses it to distract Queen Sonia and Zelda long enough to murder Sonia and steal her secret stone.

With the secret stone in his hands, he no longer needs the Gerudo. The secret stone can just massively strengthen his control over monsters; he even is able to create Gloom now, which he can use to make more monsters. And that's how the Demon King Ganondorf came to be.

This Ganondorf betrayed everyone basically. Pulling You Have Outlived Your Usefulness on your own people is a special kind of evil.

OOT Ganondorf by contrast actually managed to remain a Villain with Good Publicity with the Gerudo for a little longer thanks to Twinrova brainwashing Nabooru (one of the only Gerudo who realized Ganondorf would lead them to ruin) and making her a puppet leader.

Oh... oh wow. The Spirit Temple leadup with Mineru's construct is... I'm sorry, it's embarrassingly bad. They couldn't make the place properly story locked, so they had to (presumably) nerf the construct into the ground so you don't just get it and then run around the Depths with it; the result is a big target that eats energy like nobody's business and has weapons that do basically no damage... and then break.

Absolute embarrassment of an 11th-Hour Superpower rampage-type moment. I spent the entire enemy gauntlet dismounted, using weapons that worked.

It's been fun.

Mineru's construct is mainly for utility. It can cross gloom and lava, you don't take fall damage riding it, you can use it as a platform for arrow shooting, and equipping it with a frost shooter lets it lock down enemies really easily.

So, I mentioned that Tears of the Kingdom had given me a bunch of ideas for a Zelda story, so Iā€™d figure Iā€™d outline some of them here. Theyā€™re a bit fanficcy in places, as some are just character ideas that are unlikely to be replicated, but some are at least based on things that Iā€™d really like to see them do in the next game.

This list basically assumes a game that takes place in the same Hyrule as Bot W and Tot K, but could theoretically work for a completely new version (albeit one that drew heavy inspiration from it). A lot of these will also assume a game that takes place centuries after the last two, so not all of them would really work for a direct sequel. Iā€™m also not really trying to cohere them into a single story proposal, this is more just a collection of things I think would be cool. This is pretty lengthy, so Iā€™ve put it all in a folder:

    Zelda Ideas
  • First off, I previously mentioned in the main Zelda thread that I think it would be cool if there as a recurring enemy that hunted you throughout the game, either in semi-scripted encounters or perhaps even randomly-generated events in the overworld. Taking inspiration in particular from Metroid Fusion, I figured that a new version of Dark Link would work best here, perhaps formed out of any Gloom thatā€™s leftover. Naturally this would work well if you were playing against Link, having to face an enemy thatā€™s essentially you but at full strength, but I also think that it could work really well if you were playing as Zelda, an enemy that is the spitting image of your protector.
  • Iā€™ve also been thinking about my own collection of Sages. A full-on quest for them might be rather repetitive after just doing one in Tot K, but even if they didnā€™t go that far, I still think that thereā€™s some stuff that could be done there, particularly with Rauru and Mineru gone. So, as follows:
    • Fire Sage: Starting off the ones that are essentially my versions of the ā€œmain fourā€, since I kind of prefer Evil!Yunobo to the good version, I think itā€™d be fun to have a Goron character whoā€™s kind of a delinquent, but ends up maturing and becoming worthy of being a Sage. Kind of like Groose, but a bit rougher around the edges.
    • Water Sage: A male Zora who was once a great warrior, but renounced the sword and has become a hermit after some kind of traumatic incident.
    • Wind Sage: young Rito woman who wants to be an archer, opposing her parents (and perhaps Rito society? One can get the impression that the Rito have rather set gender roles, but perhaps this isnā€™t meant to be that clear-cut) who want her to be a singer.
    • Lightning Sage: A rather eccentric but ambitious Gerudo (perhaps the chiefā€™s daughter) who wants to enact several changes to their society, particularly allowing voe some degree of access to Gerudo Town (provided theyā€™re respectful, of course). This ties into a larger idea I had for a Gerudo storyline with a tradition vs. progress themeā€”in particular, if the Sage character was indeed the chiefā€™s daughter, I think the chief would eventually realize that the whole argument was some sort of proxy for their strained relationship, and (taking inspiration from the Hateno Village quest in Tears), decides to hold an election on whether to open up the town to voe. This could also lead to a sidequest where you have to find Gerudo who live across Hyrule so that they can come home and perform their civic duty.
    • Moving on to stuff that could theoretically work in a direct sequel to Tears, Iā€™d like to actually bring the Korok back into a Sage role, after theyā€™ve mostly been relegated to out-of-the-way comic relief. Not sure if the current arrangement has space for a Forest Sage, so Iā€™d instead suggest giving them the Spirit Sage slot, perhaps rethemed a bit to give it a forest flavor. I donā€™t really have any solid character ideas here, but Iā€™m thinking a Korok who actually prefers a bustling city life to nature might be fun. They could also bring back the Kokiri in some formā€¦perhaps this Korok appears as such when amongst normal Hyruleans.
    • This last one is a bit more complicated, and parts of it rely on the idea of this being set well after Tears, although some of it could also work for a direct sequel. So I figure Zelda would be the leader of the Sages as the Sage of Time, and a final, seventh slot (side note: Rauru counts as a Sage in this game, right?) would be the King of Hyrule as the Sage of Lightā€¦at least initially. See, I figure that once it seemed like you had awakened all of the Sages (but before they can actually unite), the villains attack and not only mortally wound the King, but destroy his Secret Stone (or other corresponding artifact). In his dying moments, the King directs Link and Zelda to a hidden temple that could awaken a new Sageā€”a dark, foreboding place with connections to the sordid history of the Sheikah Tribe, with a terrible past known to only a few. This is the Shadow Temple, and should the Sage of Light suffer an untimely demise when the need is most dire, this place can be used to awaken the Sage of Shadowā€¦and who else should this be but a young woman of the Yiga Clan, who has begun to doubt in the professed mission of her people, one that for millennia has become nothing more than an empty quest of hate and destruction. Perhaps she will be the one to finally heal the wounds of millennia past, and reunite the Sheikah tribe as it was it was always meant to beā€¦(alternatively, if this seems unbalanced, then perhaps the Sage of Shadow could be shared among two different people, one Sheikah and one Yiga. Twins separated at birth, perhaps? I think I actually like that idea more, but I figured Iā€™d share my initial idea first).
    • A recurring theme I noticed while coming up with these characters is people who, for better or worse, reject their societal role and try to chart their own paths. Where this will lead, exactly, Iā€™m not sure, but I think it does tie into my final ideaā€¦
  • It might also seems a little soon to do Ganondorf again, but this idea is pretty different. Basically, after Riju learned of the rise of Ganondorf, she took steps to ensure that if there any male children of the Gerudo in the future, they would be closely watched to ensure that they didnā€™t give rise to the Demon King once again. However, when one WAS finally born, they mysteriously disappeared, kidnapped by a cult led by the Twinrova, Kotake and Koume (taking inspiration here from their very brief cameos in Tears). Their plan, as you might expect, is to raise the boy to become the Demon Kingā€¦but is he truly destined for evil? I basically want to explore the idea of a Ganondorf who has the potential to be good, but must struggle against the legacy of his past incarnations. How that struggle ends, I couldnā€™t sayā€”I think itā€™d be fair to call Twinrova the Big Bad this time, but whether theyā€™d be the final boss is another matter.
  • Deviating a bit, it hasnā€™t escape my notice that the Triforce has not actually been mentioned in these past couple games. Whether it actually exists here is an open questionā€”itā€™s still represented on Hyrulean iconography, at leastā€”but after thinking about it, I had an idea. The Triforce DOES exist, but it is beyond the reach of humansā€”millennia ago, its bearers decided it was too much power to leave in the hands of mortals, so they transformed themselves in immortal dragons, so that it would stay with them forever, never again to be passed down and reunited. Naturally, circumstances will not permit this to lastā€”perhaps the villains would seek it to obtain ultimate power, or perhaps a situation becomes so dire that only the Triforce can save Hyrule. As for what became of these dragonsā€¦well, I think you can draw your own conclusionsā€¦
  • This is rather minor compared to previous points, but I figured it was a question worth askingā€”if we had a title set in this version of Hyrule with a new Link who DOESNā€™T start the game waking up in an unfamiliar place, what would be a good starting town for him? A rebuilt Castle Town, where heā€™s once again a knight in service of Zelda? Hateno Village, an agricultural community where our current Link has set down roots to some extent? Tarrey Town, which Link actually had a hand in founding (perhaps you could be living in his dream house with your uncle or something)? Even Lurelin Village, where Link is renowned for having saved and rebuilt it (if so, would he an appearance closer to that of its residents, who seem to on average have darker hair and skin?)? There are many potential options here.

What do you guys think? Anything you this is interesting? Any ideas of your own?
