...what nationalist undertones?
So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my TumblrLike, from the articles posted in the Unfortunate Implications page of the film.
You can't kill art.(Unfortunate Implications is Flame Bait now, so I pulled the entry. Here it was:
- Unfortunate Implications: Several commentators have argued that the film is, at least, uncomfortably close to Hindu nationalist ideology.
However, this is also the same year that people I trusted had to preface their glowing Maverick reviews with "I know this movie is uninhibited US Military propaganda on steroids. BUT".
And also the same Oscars that gave Navalny the Oscar.
So...I think as long as you are able to critically think about the things presented that shouldn't stop you from enjoying a movie.
People are just happy that an Indian and Tollywood film got an Oscar and a live performance.
Hindu nationalist themes are the unfortunate norm for many Indian films atm. Saffron flags and evil Mughals everywhere. Especially pervasive in Bollywood specifically, much less so in Tamil, Telugu films.
Deepika Padrunone, the lady who announced RRR, got in trouble with said Hindu nationalists a while back for wearing an saffron bikini for less than a minute in her new film.
The context of Naatu Naatu is that the two Indian revolutionaries are the only two non-white, non-British guests at a garden party (filmed in Kyiv's Presidential Palace), and they get immediate racist bullying from the male host. They outdance him and get all the British women dancing with them.

Just to clarify: RRR is not a Bollywood film. It’s a Tollywood film shot in the Telugu language. India has several film industries separated by language and culture. Bollywood films are in Hindi.
Thank you very much, I'll correct accordingly.
Oh, now you tell me...
You can't kill art.@Ultimatum: Here you go. This one includes the audience reactions too, including my boy Ke Huy Quan applauding.
Should we make this a general Academy Awards thread or just make a new one. That way we don't have to make a new one each year.
Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadI think it would make sense, since these kinds of events don't usually tend to get relitigated afterwards. Eurovision sticks to a single perennial thread that is active for roughly a month around the event every year, same approach could work for the Oscars too.
Richard Dreyfuss, not happy with Academy's new diversity rules.
If I had a nickel for every film where Emma Stone falls off a balcony... I'd only have two nickels, but weird that there's two of them. His reaction was seriously "now I'll never get the chance to do blackface"? Why was that something you were looking forward to?

Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonAlso I understand that he can still do that, but not expect an award.
Why would he want to do that?
Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadI sort of get where he's coming from with "you cannot legislate hurting someone's feelings", but lamenting the loss of blackface roles is not really helping his argument.
Man told not to put his hand on hot stove because it will burn complains he is being denied freedom.
I just got finished analyzing this alt right dude's rants about how not being able to deny the holocaust happened is proof of the liberal elite censoring freedom of speech.
I wish I was joking.
I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult.Next they'll be saying that criminalising murder is the first step towards criminalising non-vegan diets.
Just a note, I changed the thread title to 'Academy Awards' per a request a few posts ago and now that we're discussing the Oscars in general.

Between Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Wish (2023), which do you think is more likely to win the best animation award in 2024? I was initially expecting Wish to win, given it is the Milestone Celebration of one of oldest and most prominent companies in animation, but Spider-Verse's highly positive reviews and further exploration of animation styles may put that into question, considering its predecessor won last time.

oh hey how are you doing?Across the Spider-Verse is a shoe-in unless Wish or (unlikely but possible) Elemental are good.
It's been 3000 years…I swear if Across the Spider-verse isn't nominated for Best Picture this year, we're gonna have a problem here.
Heh, I just learned that the “Best Popular Film” debacle had an antecedent - at the very first Oscars, there were two Best Picture awards - Outstanding Motion Picture, for big studio spectacles, and Best Unique or Artistic Film, for smaller artsy offerings.
The really funny part though? In a direct reverse of the 2018 incident, the former was actually considered the big prize and the latter the condescending consolation award!
The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."Anybody heard all three of the film songs Diane Warren put out this year? Apparently only two of them got submitted for eligibility for the Best Original Song category though.
In spite of the nationalist undertones?
