Oh also, I watched the movie with my dad. Upon the second or so appearance of the Wolf, he actually said out loud "oh, so he's meant to be the Grim Reaper then?" Still unsure how I feel about him figuring it out so early, not sure I could've done it if I was watching it alone.

I'd like to apologize for all this.

I feel like it's pretty easy to figure out the first time: a creepy wolf in a black cloak with sickles that pokes ominously at the Dead part of the poster three times.

Is he visible to just the victim he hunts down? or just depending on where the victim is?

[up] I'm guessing he's visible to whoever he wants to see him, that's why nobody saw or heard him in the first battle but they did during the fight on the wishing star.

I actually thought he was visible. The crowds tried to give him space in the coin spill.

I'm pretty sure he was, at the very least, visible in the final fight. Kitty clearly saw him and noted that she didn't realize Puss was being literal about Death coming after him.

It must be repeated that the movie manages to give all three antagonists something memorable and actually do something without feeling like they're wasting space. Can you just imagine Spider-Man 3 pulling this off? Holy shit.

Also I commend all three of the protagonists getting something to do and have meaningful development. I love The Bad Guys but it was clearly a Wolf and Snake show (much like heist films).

Yeah, not gonna lie, part of me was expecting Jack Horner to be the weakest part of the film but they actually did a good job of making him really fun by virtue of going hard on how fucking awful he is. The cricket just losing his mind over how evil Jack was had me laughing in the aisles lol.

[up][up][up]I mean Diane gets a lot to do as well, making it three for three, just her Character Development is kinda quiet and offscreen most of the time (you could argue the same for Kitty, who is very similarly in an active but mostly supportive role besides her background and light lampshading that she's a hypocrite). Webs, Shark and Piranha being the less focused ones also kinda fit because they were "the kids of the group" being impacted by Wolf and Snake leading them different ways and they still got key individual moments of importance and Heel–Face Turn with them.

And let's be fair, BOTH of them juggle protagonists better than Kung Fu Panda (seriously I love those films, but the Furious Five are dramatically underused).

I'm sorry but there is only one protagonist on Kung Fu Panda. As much a fucking loathe to admit the Furious Five are barely extras at this point.

Well I mean this film is called Puss In Boots, and the Bad Guys is called the Bad Guys. None of them have an "And Friends" at the end. tongue

I get this still looks worse on the Bad Guys, but I gave my reason why I don't think it was that bad, and really in both the books and movie, it felt like Wolf was the main character anyway.

It doesn't bother me that much in The Bad Guys since heist movies tend to always focus on the point man and his number two. And even then the rest still got big roles.

But man The Last Wish really knocked it off the park.

[up][up][up][up][up][up]Horner wasn't even advertised I think.

He was briefly seen in some of the earlier trailers during the big meet-up on the Star (which also features an unused version of The Bears huddled as a trio, rather than each bear take a spot on three of the Star's tips).

I recently found a promotional Tik Tok ad focusing on his character.

Unrelated, but the theater concessions ad for the film was uploaded recently.

Yeah, Horner wasn't even in much of the promotion I remembered seeing.

I'm genuinely surprised he turned out as well as he did. Once he showed up, I was thinking it'd be something more...I guess harkening back to the old animation style of Shrek, with the ugly human designs and stuff...but then the comedy of just how much of a selfish bastard he is turned it around. I'm already seeing a lot of memes about that one shot of him holding the crystal ball during one of the montage scenes (sidenote but holy FUCK the scene transitions in this movie were so good).

Jack Horner was hilarious. I love how much of his humor came from how awful of a person he is. [lol]

We don’t get villains like that much

The film has it all: The love to hate Card-Carrying Villain, the sympathetic Anti-Villain and cool Noble Demon villain.

And all of that without the story being cluttered or the lead characters being overshadowed.

This film is honestly the perfect conter to the argument that the lack of memorable villains in recent Disney films is just the ligical result of them putting more focus on the development of their protagonists.

Thinking of other Dreamworks films, now that I remember How to Train Your Dragon never could figure out what to do with the other dragon riders beyond Hiccup and Astrid.

After the first film they for the most part just devolved into terrible comic relief.

One thing I'd like to point out is that I do agree that the film did very good balancing it's three villains. Crucially that's because Death really isn't in it that much, and Jack isn't a very deep character, just as horrible and funny as possible. Most of the development went to Goldi, while the most memorable moments were given to Death. Still he technically got the short end of the stick, but it was made up for it by making the most of his screentime.
