No big shocks beyond the Best Supporting Actor category going with both Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield. Both deserving of a nomination. Though Stanfield was clearly lead. So that I don't get.

Close while unsurprising is bit funny as she also got a Razzie nomination. I personally wouldn't have nominated here for either. She's not bad in the movie, but she's far the best of the year.

I have still got to see Borat 2 and Promising Young Woman. So I can't really comment on those.

I thought it was standard Award Category Fraud to avoid duking it out with Boseman (and Ahmed/Yeun/Hopkins in the wings) but WB campaigned for Stanfield as lead in their FYC materials so it was the voters who put both in Supporting.

I have yet to watch Minari.

It is pretty funny this comes hot in the heels of me talking about how I expected this to happen in some fashion with Judas and the Black Messiah. Looks like I was right.

I imagine Kaluuya has this in the bag.

Speaking of which. While I am not surprised that Maria Bakalova got nominated here, since literally got nominated everywhere. I am surprised a comedy like Borat 2 got acting nominations. The academy is usually very uptight in not nominating comedy performances, unless it's an established actor.

Well it wasn’t just acting she was doing. It was acting with real people including Rudy Giuliani.

I am not saying its underserved. Just not what you would normally expect from the usually uptight Academy.

I haven't watched the movie yet, but I plan to. I was already planning on watching the movie anyways, as I was a fan of the original.

I imagine Kaluuya has this in the bag.

If Stanfield hadn’t also been nominated I’d maybe agree but isn’t there a chance they’ll split the votes?

It's possible. But while Stanfield's performance is aces I think Kaluuya's is a lot more eye-catching (particularly due being a more public figure) and I figure it'll still clinch him the win.

Birds of Prey not in Best Costume Design or Makeup and Hairstyling is a travesty. :/

It had... a lot of costume design and makeup, at least.

Good to see Chadwick Boseman got a nomination, though.

If I had a nickel for every film where Emma Stone falls off a balcony... I'd only have two nickels, but weird that there's two of them.

Yeah Boseman is also currently the favorite to win on most sites, and having seen the I think it is a deserved one if he does. Though it's a shame he died before he could get a deserved Oscar for a great performance.

Really the Actor categories are pretty much locked down on who will win. The Actress categories are more up in the air.

Well. The SAGs we're last night and I am noticing something weird happening. The Actress categories have been different everywhere. While the Actor categories have been consistent. Not sure what it means for the Oscars. But it's definitely weird.

[up]Something something something Pixar wins Best Animated Feature. tongue

To entertain myself I've been looking at Oscar "who will win vs. who should win" lists when they show up on my TL. It looks like Nomadland is a lock for BP, and Boseman and Kaluuya remain highly favored to win the Actors. (As noted, Best Actress is anyone's game, although people seem to be favoring Yuh-joung Youn for Supporting a lot more than they were a month ago.)

Soul will probably win Best Animated, but unlike many Disney-umbrella films that have won by virtue of being released by the mouse house, I think this one deserves it.

I haven't seen any of the documentaries or short films, so can't say there.

Also, Sound of Metal will obviously win Best Sound, and Visual Effects should go to Tenet for sheer effort.

Oh. yeah. Nomadland is definitely the front-runner for Picture and Director. Those and Soul for Animated Feature are probably the easiest categories to predict.

For Animated Feature, I'd love for Wolfwalkers to win but I'm not even gonna be upset if Soul wins because it's just that good.

I love how so many people are confused that there was a Pinnochio movie that came out last year and it apparently passed like a ship in the night.

Welp, I'm hearing Chadwick Boseman got rooked.

Times like this make me wish a seperate posthumous award existed.

we need to find and hunt down the Oscars intern from the 2017 Ceremony who wished on a monkey's paw that people would forget about that year's Moonlight fiasco

Chadwick getting robbed was a sour note that threatened to damn the whole evening (namely because it was also last in a ill-conceived idea). Particularly with the fact Kaluuya and Stanfield quite probably ducked under the best actor (running both as best supporting in that famously confusing decision) to clear path for Chadwick Boseman and avoid splitting the vote.

Otherwise, it wasn't a bad night. Chloe Zhao is historic (second woman to win best director, first asian woman, third asian person) and Kaluuya got his just rewards, but that really soured affairs.

Am I only one who thought it was weird they gave out the Best Picture award before Actress and Actor?

I wanted Boseman to win. Frances McDormand was a nice surprise though. She became the seventh actor/actress to win three or more acting awards.
