Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.

This thread is for discussing the following topics:

  • Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
  • If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.

This thread is not for any of the following:

  • Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
  • Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts (reply to the relevant moderator via PM).
  • Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread in this forum).
  • Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote  or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages").
  • Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread and other banned OTC topics is here. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
  • Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here).
  • Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes', as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Query Wishlist, and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread.
  • Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
  • Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
  • Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread for discussing inactive users.

Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

My apologies if this is not the proper thread for this, but I would like to bring your attention to this herald list (I couldn't find the proper herald forum). It has a missing herald for the World Building subforum. Any idea what's going on? Or has that list been outdated for a long while?

Hey, say what you want about Blanky Mc Blankerson, but you gotta admit, they have the best greeting. (Yes, this is what comes up when you click the button next to the blank).

Seriously though, that's bizarre.

This also reminds me that us new heralds never got our badges. RIP.

Like, is there or has there been a herald for World Building? Or there was never one to begin with? It's very strange, considering all other subforums have their positions occupied.

Speaking of missing heralds, Brainulator9's last edit was on May 26th, 2020, and their last forum post was on June 12th, 2020. I haven't seen them anywhere since, so I think they've gone completely inactive. Does this mean Short Term Projects needs a new herald?

I don't think so. All we really do is send out automatic PMs. It's very rare for anyone to actually reply to the PM and even more rare for that PM to be something we have to respond to.

(Just reminding that there is a dedicated herald thread, so this discussion's better there)

I agree that bans (temporary or otherwise) for people who panic too easily is a better response than a lock.

I feel that the problem isn’t just the people who panic easily, it’s also the people who push the conversation towards talking about worst-case hypotheticals.

Even if all the panicky people were removed the thread still won’t be conductive to health conversation if we keep having tangents around ideas like permanent lockdown.

I hope it wasn't me. I tend to go on tangents sometimes, but I don't mean to fan the flames or anything.

Maybe a cooldown lock? Permalock may be a bit extreme, but locking it for a few days or a week and firmly stating why might help get everyone's heads straight.

I don't think that is really necessary any more, things have already cooled down and moved on.

I think that as long as the mods calm things down, it will be fine.

And locking the thread temporarily might be a valid way to cool things down; force everyone to stop talking and thinking about it for a bit (at least on here) and open it back up after enough of the "cool down" period has passed. A few days at most should be all that's needed to get the message across. Sometimes the best way to calm things down is just to walk away.

If people had been breaking established rules I’d agree on that, but right now the thread doesn’t have explicit rules about dragging the conversation into unsubstantiated hypotheticals.

My hope is that if that was made an explicit rule the thread would stabilise and be okay.

Hey I was one of the people who got panicky on that thread. I took a temporary hiatus and I'm back early and feeling a bit better. Here's the question—since I apologized and will not try to panic people again, could I (or anyone else who makes genuine efforts to be calmer after that) still be banned for having made things worse?

Typically, the mods seem to suspend people to force them to listen and change their behavior. If you've already realized and want to make an effort to improve, I think you should be fine.

[up] Thanks, good to know. I think I'll just avoid this and the other thread, too drama-filled for my sanity.

I believe Red’s post was made before the mod action.

May I please request for the removal of the sticky in the "Fire Emblem" thread? I think, long before now, we've managed to keep extensive Fire Emblem: Three Houses talk in the proper thread so the sticky seems unnecessary at this point.

Can mods "un-thump" posts, or are they stuck like that permanently? This isn't about any particular post, I was just curious if mods have that ability.
