Does Not Illustrate: Homing Projectile

The image shows a projectile, although it's kind of hard to make out. What it doesn't show is that the projectile is homing. I'd say we should pull this.

A better example, or this one.

[tdown] to both; 1.1 is essentially a stock photo and 1.2 is watermarked.

Current isn't great, but it's still better than both of the suggestions; 1.1 is a boring, texty technical explanation and 1.2 is watermarked.

I have to agree that both the suggestions and current aren't great. In particular, 1.1 appears to be demonstrating Lead the Target rather than this.

I did some searching, but all I came up with is this. I mean, I suppose that it's better than nothing — it shows a projectile following a fleeing target — but I was hoping to find a clearer image.

clearly things are going well.

The trope made me think of this.

[up] That's pretty good actually.

First thing that came to mind was this Despicable Me scene. It's the main focus of the image to comedic effect, and the lasers also imply they're automated in their pointing at him.

^ Was there a second scene because the one I found didn't have this shot. Anyways, alternative combo:

[up]It is a different scene, IIRC, way earlier than the one you posted. The collage looks nice but makes no sense in context.

To me, 7 looks like a huge mecha is pointing its weapons at that guy, not that the rockets are flying towards him. I prefer the current.

[tdown] to 8. Neither image is illustrative on its own, but they don't work with context because they're from two different scenes. I still vote to pull the current, however.

clearly things are going well.

Not a fan of random images from google search. Any work-related examples?

I still prefer 12.1, it's much clearer than the other suggestions.

We really get too many votes in this forum that say it's a great image but let's not use it because it's (1) the simpsons, (2) a webcomic, or (3) in this case google.

Seriously people, look at image quality.

Is there a source for 12.1? It's my personal choice, but only if there's no legal hurdles to its use.

[up]It's hosted in and is supposed to be somewhere on this webpage on guided missiles, but it's not visible on the page. That said, the site "ABCScience" is an educational resource for sharing science facts.

It's got a handful of other online uses I can find, the most "good news for our use" is this Department of Defense challenge on using radar absorbing materials that was approved for public release.

It has no clear attribution, except for this one guy's site who has copyrighted "everything that appears there." It feels a bit sketchy but I'm not a lawyer.

I don't get the complaints against the Despicable Me one.

Y'all are familiar with This Image Is Not an Example, right? You're aware that images just need to illustrate, and don't need to literally be the trope in-universe, and that the actual context of the work means shit if the image illustrates the trope?

Like, sometimes you guys just baffle me.

12.1 works fine and I also like 18.1, but seriously guys, what the hell?

[up] A key point of a homing projectile is that it can alter its path after being launched. The Despicable Me pictures don't show any flight path, much less an altered one, while 12.1 shows a clear contrail.
