Cleaning Up To Eleven sinkholes.

If you’ve ever been on this wiki, you’ve probably seen Up To Eleven sinkholed somewhere. That’s always driven me nuts that’s it’s everywhere and yet barely anyone has done anything about it.

Up To Eleven is about options to go beyond the normal maximum, like on a gauge. However, it’s misused to pothole whenever there’s an Exaggerated Trope happening.

I really wanted to take this to TRS, suggest a name change and cleaning all the misused wicks, but in my ATT thread about this trope, one of the mods said to make a thread about it on Short Term. So here I am right now about it.

Honestly, I have no idea what this trope even means anymore.

And since this is so embedded in wiki culture, I think we need a long-term thread. This may become another I Am Not Making This Up but even worse, since it's also on Administrivia pages.

What I hate about this trope is that this trope is so ridiculously misused due to its unclear name that I’d say the only way to end the misuse for good is to bring it to TRS, but at the same time, it has so many wicks that I don’t know how we’d be able to get thought them all. At this point, I kind of want to just completely nuke this trope and restart from scratch.

Maybe change the name to Gauge Inflation.

We could also rename the trope and delete the Up To Eleven redirect, making red links that could be deleted by anyone who sees them.

That won't work unfortunately; we'd still need to move proper examples to the correct name.

I think the issue requires a TRS thread, since at least one user mentioned that the Up To Eleven sinkholes don't reflect proper usage of the trope. I'd also like to clean up the Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking sinkholes, so maybe we need a broader Pothole Magnet cleanup thread.

Ignore the suggestion in the previous post; I think that it should be sufficient to rename this trope and retarget Up To Eleven to Exaggerated Trope. I think opening a Pothole Magnet cleanup thread is still a good idea, however.

My idea? Make Up To Eleven Just for Fun like Egregious is and move the old definition to a much more indicative name.

But we'd need a TRS thread for that, of course.

There are 27753 wicks, so a wick check requires at least 167 pages. I think the Wick Check Project in this forum will be of help here, owing to its unwieldy size. It will be at Sandbox.Wick Check Up To Eleven.

We should probably also add Up To Eleven (as well as Sarcasm Mode) to Tropes Needing TRS just due to their excessive sinkholing.

That was what first came into my mind as well.

Sarcasm Mode is meant to be used as a pothole to indicate sarcasm, since it's sometimes hard to tell if you're being sarcastic in text.

Except for the literal fact that tropers are using it to pothole their own sarcasm. Sarcasm Mode is more for forum use and for when fiction denotes someone is being sarcastic.

By the way, I'm going to start a wick check for Up To Eleven to see how many of its uses are for potholes. See if TRS can fix the problem.

EDIT 2: Now I'm not so sure if this is possible since there's over 100000 wicks... Is there an easier way to do this?

Also, I want to point out that the number of wicks has grown by so much since we started the check^note if my quick calculator math is correct, it's gotten around 800 new wicks in three months that the target number increased by three. The longer we wait, the more out-of-hand this will become.

We must request the mods for a moratorium against adding the trope Up To Eleven so that the wick check and cleanup can go smoothly.

Okay, but how would they enforce that? We can't get any tech changes at the moment, there's no easy way to figure out what the newest wicks are, and we need permission from TRS to dewick it.

Yeah, the mods aren't omniscient. How are they supposed to enforce it?

No, we just need to get in gear and finish the check. If we want to get this fixed it's on us to do the work in time.
