Multiverse Corps: First Flight

You may have heard of the Green Lantern Corps, whose members wield willpower and patrol space protecting it. Or if you were lucky, the Blue Lantern Corps, wielding Hope, or the Star Sapphires, who wield Love.

What little people have heard of are the Multiverse Corps. Its members do not wield a single, specific emotion, but rather, they are chosen by a trait they have, which later becomes the fuel of their Multiverse Bands.

The Multiverse Rangers are chosen from an array of universes who you didn't even know they existed. From Peter Kord, the Blue Spider from Earth-36616 and Mae Dibny, Tsunami of Earth-11260, to Hanne Stenberg, police officer, of Earth-408.

And recently, you were chosen as a Multiverse Ranger of Sector 52. With a bunch of other people, you have to go and protect some universes, and hopefully, something more.

Welcome to Multiverse Corps: First Flight, a play-by-post DC Multiverse crossover roleplay with the basic premise of being Green Lantern in a Multiversal setting.

There is more information and worldbuilding (and stuff you need to know) in the Sign-Up Thread over here. We also have a Discord. Invites will be PMed after completing your signup.

The Space Between Universes, also known as Knabrub

A giant space station in space. A meeting room inside it, where twenty persons, of different gender, appearance and attire, were sitting in a half-cycled table, facing a man in front of them. A bald man wearing sunglasses starts to speak in a barely intelligible Scottish accent.

The entire table except one person and the man in front stare at him, having understood nothing of what he said.

"What he means is that the new recruits will arrive soon. It's your duty to meet them when they arrive, answer their questions and show them around after taking them to the Reunion Room." Explained the remaining person, a brown-haired man sitting next to the bald man.

"Yes, sir." Said the man in front, heading outside.

Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China, Earth-520

The night was, without doubt, not quiet. The night life in the streets all indicated that the city rarely rested. The stores at the Southern Song Imperial Street and the Hefang Street were open, and the small food stands had been advertising their product for a while. The Crimson Dragon hovered in a small cloud above a tea store, drinking a cup of Dragon Well tea.

There hadn't been any crime for a week, and she had been doing some small good deeds and concentrating in her studies by then. Delivering some stuff, helping kids stuck in trees, and overall making the area around the West Lake a better place.

She took off her mask, or at least, the first one. She wore half a red Beijing Opera mask, which left her mouth and part of her cheeks uncovered, over what was called a Domino Mask in America, with irisless eyes. Both made by the Carp Smiths decades ago to protect the identity of her cousin the White Dragon in her quest for justice, and repainted for her own use years later.

She adjusted her red hanfu a bit, and then put the mask on again. The nights at Hangzhou were nice. Thousands of lights were lit and shined like stars in the sky. But Crimson Dragon noticed a different light coming from the sky. Bright red, and shinier than the usual lantern. She stood up and rose with the cloud until she got a closer look at the shining object, a bright red bracelet which suddenly flew into her right wrist and started talking.

"Crimson Dragon of Earth-520. You have great kindness in yourself. Welcome to the Multiverse Corps."

Arlington, Virginia, United States of America, Earth-526

The day was long, hot and rainy, the annals of summmer and spring being recorded simultaneously by time and song. One song blaring particularly loudly from a someone's apartment window.

The sun showers that fall on my troubles
Are over you my baby
And some showers I'll be aiming at you
'Cause I'm watching you my baby

Inside there was a black woman laying in her bed with a speaker blasting a song from an old record of hers, a personal favorite at that.

He told them he didn't know them
He wasn't there, they didn't know him
They showed him a picture then
Ain't that you with the Muslims?

By the time the second verse was halfway done, a grey braclet attached itself to her ankle while saying:

"Ash of Earth-526. You have shown a strong sense of justice within yourself. Welcome to the Multiverse Corps.".

Universe #521-Indali Bowin-Lisbon, Portugal

The dinner was quite good, she had to admit. The wine was even better. And the company?

Becky was a smart young woman. The son of a notorious rascal who went by the name of the Gambler, Becky had followed in his footsteps. She'd kept her activities to the realm of casinos and white-collar crime. After all, there weren't any superheroes with a secret identity at the IRS. To Indali, who likewise tried to avoid the messy stuff where she could, this was a smart move.

Also, dining with someone who could guarantee good luck meant you'd always have a table ready. Indali cocked an eyebrow at her companion. "Quite a dinner. Why are you buttering me up so much?"

Becky grinned the grin of someone banned at half the tables in Vegas but went in anyway. "There's a trade show of financial security system companies booked for next month at the Mirage. They're looking for entertainment and they like to gamble. You put the whammy on the crowd, I clean them out at the tables, and we both steal any secrets they might have and sell them for more profits. Interested?"

Virtuosa paused. If they didn't hit the place, someone else would. Someone without their restraint. "All right, but I have an added wrinkle. Call in a third party anonymously. Someone wild. Tip them off about something else going on in Vegas one or two days before. Then we also let the Flash know. He fights the distraction. We clean up while he's busy and a dangerous person is taken off the table at the same time. "

Becky paused, then nodded. "And if things go sideways, we can always jump in as good citizens." She nodded and got up." I'll send you the information about the conference tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of the wine."

Indali leaned back, enjoying the view. I'll probably end up donating half the money to the UNCF anyway. Wait, is that star moving? Before she could react, it slipped in an open window and hovered before her. Shining with a purple light, it spoke: Indali Bowin of Earth-521. You have shown great efficiency and strategic thinking. Welcome to the Multiverse Corps.

'Earth 523, Evening'

With a sigh, Caitlin plugs her wristband back into its charger. She still can't stand it- feeling completely dependent on a machine just to keep herself alive.

Although she's able to use a portable charger, it's still beyond annoying; it dangles from her wrist and keeps hitting her legs.

A quick knock at the door. Caitlin rises to her feet; it's an open secret her home is open to those in need.

A girl stands in the doorway; she couldn't possibly be older than seventeen. She has a hand placed on her stomach; Caitlin quickly realizes she's pregnant.

"My parents kicked me out when I told them," the girl explains. "I...I was told this would be a safe place for me to stay."

"Of course. Please, come in."

Caitlin leads her in. "It's nothing fancy, but there's a spare bedroom on the first floor and more food in the fridge than I could possibly eat on my own. Which reminds me, I should probably take the garbage out." She drapes a blanket over the newcomer's shoulders. "What's your name, by the way?"

"Ava."

Caitlin nods. "Alright, Ava. I'll be back in just a few minutes."

Briefly stepping outside, Caitlin breathes in the cool evening air. For a brief moment, she sees what she thinks might be a comet of some sort...only to realize that it's coming closer...right towards her! Too frozen with fear to run from it, she's rather surprised when it turns out to be something else entirely. It shone with a brilliant blue light, and in a voice she didn't recognize, it spoke to her.

"Caitlin Snow of Earth-523. You have demonstrated a deep desire to help others, even at a cost to yourself. Welcome to the Multiverse Corps."

Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China, Earth-520

The Crimson Dragon screamed and tried to take the bracelet off for a few minutes before realizing it was stuck in her hand.

"What sorcery is this? What is the Multiverse Corps?"

And less of a second after she finished, the bracelet spoke again.

"The Multiverse Corps is an organization dedicated to the protection of the Multiverse. Its members, the Multiverse Rangers, are chosen for their special trait, which serves as fuel for their Multiverse Band, such as myself. When the Trait fuel is considered not enough for sustaining a misson, an energy battery is provided for it. I will take you to the headquarters in the Space Between Universes, also known as Knabrub."

"Wait!" Said Crimson Dragon, still overwhelmed and shocked.

"What if I don't want to do this?"

"Unless there are more candidates for your universe, you have no choice but to join. The specifics change depending of the person, but usually, if you really don't want it, you will be allowed to leave after a week of work."

"It can't hurt to try... but what about my life in here and my hero business?"

"The missions you are assigned will be as short as they can be made and adjusted to your schedule. You will be able to continue your life too."

"Well, it's Friday, and the latest days have been quiet... I suppose I could be doing this. When do we start?"

"Right now. More explications will be given later."

And without further notice, the bracelet shot a blast of energy that formed into a portal and dragged Crimson Dragon into it, and then closed.

The Space Between Universes, also known as Knabrub

What Crimson Dragon saw next was what appeared to be an enormous space station, floating in space with stars in the distance. To be fair, it looked a bit like the Hall of Justice, the Justice League headquarters at Earth, with the front part and everything.

Three people were waiting near the doors. One of them resembled the hero Blue Beetle (the second one), although he had a spider motif and had different googles and his hair was loose. Another was clearly an alien, and she was blue-skinned and wore a classic Coat, Hat, Mask costume. And the last one, way burlier than the rest, was a tall black man in a bright red costume and a bird-like mask.

"A teenager? The recruits keep getting younger and younger every batch!"

"Oh, shut up, Blue Spider! If you had payed more attention when the Guardians told us to see the newest recruits, you'd know she's an immortal dragon older than you!"

Cut it up, you two. Welcome to the Multiverse Corps. I'm Hawk Flame, but you can just call me Jack. These are Blue Spider and Skarmir Jan. I suppose you didn't hear anything about sectors by the Multiverse Band, right?

"Uh, yeah. I imagine it's something similar to the Green Lantern Sectors?"

Oh kid. You have no idea.

Indali Bowin of Earth-521

She'd appeared in front of the strange building alongside the other two women, and the first thing Indali did was to take off running. Clearly this was some kind of trap or interstellar alien thing, and she was not interested. She had a big job planned! And money! And a nice bed in a penthouse suite!

Purple light flared on her wrist, and she was dragged back before the others. Complaining. "What is this? What's going on?" She reached for her violin, but it was..gone? Moved elsewhere? Somehow she knew it hadn't been destroyed or left behind. And what was a "Green Lantern Sector"? The lady in red seemed pretty calm.

Indali scowled. She was good at planning and anticipation. Getting sent to an alien planet kind of blew it all to hell.

Oh, hello. I'm Jack, that's Blue Spider, Skarmir Jan and Crimson Dragon over there.

Hi!

Greetings.

"Hi! You're a new recruit like me, right?"

I can see you don't seem too happy for this, and I can understand. You have been just dragged to some kind of outer space and kinda forced to have a job. And presumably, haven't gotten the info dump the Band is supposed to do if you ask it to explain to you.

We're basically like Protectors of the Multiverse, or, if you look at it the other way, Multiversal Cops. We go through universes, fix up holes in the space-universe continuum and battle giant space bugs, and battle villains if they are too dangerous or something.

The good thing is that you can eventually quit. The bad thing, is that you have to work for a week first. I'm sorry for all the plans you have in your universe, but this is going to take a few hours every day.

He then turned back to Crimson Dragon.

Well, the Multiverse is divided in sectors of ten universes each, and you are from Sector 52, like me. I'm assigned to be your mentor during at least the first week. Blue Spider and Skarmir Jan will help ocassinally.

The Sectors are nearby, so that's a given.

I'll give you my Band number.

But there are still two more new recruits that haven't arrived yet. Let's wait for them.

Indali

She nodded as the man spoke. Truthfully, the Band had been trying to talk, but between her panic at SPACE and irritation, she'd told it to shut up. But now that she was on solid ground. Indali was feeling calmer.

"Thanks for the heads up. A week, huh? Well, I guess I can reschedule a few things. Though if my plants die, I will be unhappy," she snarked. More seriously, "I don't do this kind of thing very often. Is there a training school or something?"
