Dark times had come to the galaxy. The Central Galactic Republic, formerly the main government of civilized space, had been torn apart by civil wars and insurrections. As its former leaders fought amongst themselves over how to reestablish control and rogue factions plotted to take over in their place, lawlessness, poverty and violence spread. Some people resorted to desperate measures to survive while others took advantage of the misfortunes of others, and with little stable law enforcement, an increasing number of systems became hotbeds of crime. Smugglers, pirates and other lowlifes dominated the stars, answering to no authority and only truly threatened by each other.

As such, when the former Republic cruiser Nine-Tailed Cat suffered total system failure near the planet Niftaven and had to be abandoned, it was no surprise that it drew in a variety of scavengers and pirates: Anything that could be salvaged intact, whether fuel, weapons, cargo or even just the rare metals in the hull plating, would fetch a hefty price on the black market. Before long, six rogue ships had surrounded the derelict Cat with the intent of stripping everything of value from it. However, none of the scavengers had any intent of sharing their prize, and furthermore, their rivals were sure to have some nice cargo themselves. Thus, each ship warmed up its engines and weapons for combat. Their piloting skills and choice of targets would soon decide who would be rich and who would be dead...

Round 1 begins now. Game time started.

Plasma blasts and lasers blazed all around the abandoned Nine-Tailed Cat in a chaotic free-for-all. A few stray shots grazed the cruiser‘s hull plates while the rest sped off into the void, slowly dissipating in the distance. The six pilots weaved about each other, dodging incoming fire and retaliating with barrages of their own while looking for good openings.

A number of shots came uncomfortably close to jaketroper's vessel. Looking for any way to get the pressure off him, he withdrew into an unrealistically-dense asteroid field where the others wouldn't dare follow. However, he overestimated his ship's maneuverability, and while he managed to dodge the rocks for a time, a fast-moving one caught him by surprise and smashed his ship into scrap metal.

Dookie Idiot Nimrod circled the cruiser while watching his rivals, looking for an easy target. It wasn't long before he found one: Moptophugger's ship was having engine problems and lurched about erratically. Dookie charged up his main cannon, waited for Moptophugger's ship to stall again, then locked on and fired. Before Moptophugger could dodge, he was wiped out in an explosion of superheated plasma.

Afterwards remained on the edge of the fray, letting the others fight amongst themselves and firing a few warning shots at anyone who came close. However, he failed to dissuade Bluethorn, who closed in and began raining fire on him. Afterwards tried to fight back, but it was too late, and a well-aimed laser blast from Bluethorn struck his power core and exploded his ship.

Out of the others' way, dave_the_assassin flew about, firing off the occasional shot in the general direction of the main battle. He knew he wasn't likely to hit anyone, but paid it little mind - after all, half the competition had been taken out without him having to lift a finger. He swerved to avoid a few stray shots from Bluethorn and Dookie, reminding himself not to get complacent: The fight was still far from over, and it was anyone's game at this point.

Round 2 begins now. Mr. Speaker, we are for the Big.

Aw man. I always was too paranoid.

As the fight continued, the number of shots exchanged fell and a newly-formed debris field made piloting more hazardous - both consequences of half the ships involved being destroyed. Bluethorn and Dookie Idiot Nimrod decided to take a more cautious approach, with the former laying down mines to protect him while the latter took cover behind the Nine-Tailed Cat. From there, they awaited the approach of dave_the_assassin.

Rather than risk damaging his prize, dave chose to attack the relatively-exposed Dookie, firing upon him with everything he had. Dookie focused on evasive maneuvers, too occupied by dodging and weaving around to return fire. In the end, one of dave's shots struck true and dropped Dookie's shields, but before he could finish him off, Dookie detonated the charges he'd planted, blasting dave_the_assassin's vessel into space-dust.

Meanwhile, from his hiding place, Bluethorn attempted to pick off his rivals with homing missiles at a safe distance. However, the cruiser that gave him shelter was also interfering with his targeting, limiting the missiles' effective range. With the others occupied elsewhere, they were too far away for the missiles' guidance systems to get a lock, but there was one thing they could lock onto - Bluethorn himself. Before he realised his mistake, one of his shots arced back around and struck his engines, sending him spiraling out of control and smashing to pieces against the Nine-Tailed Cat's hull.

With the competition out of the way, Dookie Idiot Nimrod was free to scavenge all he could from the cruiser, and found enough supplies to fund a brand-new pirate fleet. Not one to miss an opportunity, he purchased several new ships, recruited crews of scoundrels to man them, and became Pirate Lord Dookie, terror of the Niftaven system. His power and ruthlessness made him a valuable prospective ally to all sides in the Republic civil wars, and whichever one he chose to back - if he chose one at all, that is - would have a stronger chance to solidify their own power. His actions would soon shape the course of galactic history...
