Good luck, Kaluuya. You'll need it.
The only way I could see this working is if it's a dramatization of the show's origins and production. A straight film adaptation would be a laughingstock.

One piece of BTS trivia I always found interesting regarding Barney is one of the original child actors was forced off due to being bullied by one of the others (why they didn't kick off the kid that was doing the actual bullying is a Riddle for the Ages).

If I had a nickel for every film where Emma Stone falls off a balcony... I'd only have two nickels, but weird that there's two of them.Touche.

With... very dubious methods. :|

That'd be a necessity for making a darker Barney movie.
...Also, I'm surprised this is still happening.
It's been 3000 years…The idea of a darker Barney is incredibly confusing. Should we be concerned?
Wake me up at your own risk.Which children property are they gonna give a dark and edgy remake next?
E.T technically is a Isekai movieTo be fair, a Darker and Edgier Barney is...not saying much, so you could still have it be pretty kiddy.
For what it's worth, if I were making a Barney movie, I'd probably try making it akin to an ET-type story. Some kids find a friendly talking dinosaur and befriend it and have to do things like hide it or find a way for it to get home or prove it's not dangerous or whatever.

"Any campaign world where an orc samurai can leap off a landcruiser to fight a herd of Bulbasaurs will always have my vote of confidence"Looks like the "I Love You" song will be repurposed for a darker and 'heartbreaking' moment in the movie
From the way Kaluuya phrases his response:
Some might think it's a clue that this will be a horror fare, but what if this ends up doing to Barney what The Lego Movie did to Lego in that the movie that looks shamelessly made to promote some new toy ends up revealing a much deeper tale that strikes at our hearts in a way we never saw coming?
God knows Barney's a really easy target for the internet and everyone else to point and laugh at, so it'll be mighty surprising to have those same people reacting like "...why does it feel like I'm being judged?"

Dont people like lego though unlike barney.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."You ever have people who fixate on an idea and despite everyone else telling them it doesn’t work, they keep pushing forward trying to make it work?
That’s this whole concept. I’m sure it sounded good in his head.
...Fair point.
Hey, it's literally the only way I can even slightly comprehend something as stupidly absurd as a Barney movie by the guy from Get Out.
(I kid about that last one, but if everyone wants me to knock it off, I will. Sorry.)

Maybe the movie will play on the idea that Barney wasn't loved during the original series, and how no one holds fond memories of the show now that they're older? Basically, a meta look on anti-Barney humour and how prevalent it was during the '90s and '00s.
Edited by chasemaddigan on Oct 23rd 2020 at 2:39:34 PM
Wait, this thing is still going on?!
Death is a companion. We should cherish Death as we cherish Life. It's a smaller movie and more meta, but I recently saw the B-movie horror-comedy The Banana Splits Movie, which is basically the same premise of a children's show made into a horror film.
If it wasn't for Kaluuya I don't think anyone would entertain this project, but people like him and so want it to be good. But it's hard to grasp how this will play out, part of the anti-Barney circles is that it lacks the Periphery Demographic that makes things like Sesame Street or Mister Rogers beloved years later. Even Kaluuya is saying they are try to re-envision the context of the show.
Then again, the Dora the Explorer movie got an 85% Rotten Tomato score, so anything is possible.

Because it leaned quite a bit on the belief that Dora is crazy.
It's been 3000 years…Just a yearly reminder that this is still happening. Why? Because reasons.
Yes, that's right. Barney the Purple Dinosaur is going to return to the big screen thanks to Mattel and Daniel Kaluuya.
I don't know how this is happening, but I kinda want to see it.
