US Politics - Impeachment Proceedings

Go To

This thread is intended for a civil, focused discussion on the various impeachment proceedings of President Trump and others in the administration.

Keep in mind that this is a narrowly focused thread, created to more closely manage this topic of discussion. The pros and cons of said impeachment were soft-banned in the General US Politics thread for a few months, due to incessant arguing. However, there is a high desire to discuss said events and it is of such high prominence that we are willing to give this devoted thread a try.'

Things to keep in mind:

  • This is about impeachment, votes on, investigations on, inquiries in, articles on, etc. Other American political discussions should go into the General Politics thread.
  • Standard rules apply. Civility and appropriate forum conduct are paramount.
  • Circular arguments about pros/cons are what got the topic banned in the first place. If we feel it's going circular, we will intervene. Multiple intercessions will not be looked on kindly.
  • As for that intervention, mods will be monitoring and moderating this thread more closely due to the nature of the topic, and its history in the General Politics thread. We will warn and thump in an effort to keep this thread on-topic and civil, but we are more than willing to lock it if people aren't willing to course-correct.

This thread doesn't have to be a case of Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things, but it will be, if necessary.

Doug Collins (GOP) really needs a chill-pill.

He's rambling so fast and shouting so high that I mistook him for a jackhammer at first...

The GOP are full on the retreat, rambling nothing but nonsense so far and accusing Team Blue for pressing for impeachment because "they didn't like the guy!"...

And accusing Team Blue for "foul play"...

Update: And now claims that "DONALD TRUMP ALWAYS TOLD THE TRUTH!!!"

(Which at this point, just got me to stop listening to this nonsense and made the GOP's opening point perfectly clear.)

And now has the audacity to demand for chairman Schiff to testify first.

Well yeah, because he's repeatedly abused his power as president. I think that's a perfectly valid reason.

This vote-taking has something of a rhythm to it.

To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."

And now the GOP are trying to throw a smokescreen in the face of the chairman by hair-splitting a rule.

Denied.

Now witnesses.

Wait, is this actually happening now? Is Trump actually being impeached?

I mean, I know he won't be removed, what with the Senate being the way it is, but I'm honestly surprised we even got this far.

Not just yet. It's gone to the Judicial Committee in the House so they can determine what articles of impeachment to write up.

Obviously, Trump is going to be impeached.

American democracy won't mean anything if he isn't.

Also, Trump's financials have been entered into evidence in the impeachment process. Their release is now historical.

Lol, the GOP is actually trying to call off the hearing until a later date.

Oh yeah, expect even more Republican jackassery than in the Intelligence Committee. There are twice as many Nunes and Jordan's here.

3 out of 4 witnesses (professionals) have been having their opening statements so far.

Result: GOP and every single one of their arguments = Destroyed

We aren't even through the opening statements yet.

The GOP witness is completely bonkers... he just quoted a fictional play for his defense...

And now the GOP tried to drag out the whistleblower into the room on demand... AGAIN!!

The witnesses (the three democratic ones) are being questioned...

They are making it crystal clear with easily understandable facts about impeachment and why Trump is impeachable.

It's really damning for the GOP and Trump.

[up]No amount of logical arguments are going to make much of a difference if the people who need to listen to them are burying their faces underground.

I'm with Charles, the more important part is how much of Trump's little network will be dismantled.

So basically, we probably won't take down the big boss himself, but we very likely will take down some of his minions, and that's definitely good for us?

The big boss will also not enjoy it whatsoever, which, while in itself already already a worthy goal, is likely to result in more erratic behaviour, decreasing his and his toadies' chances in the next election.

Trump has also proven that he is watching every minute of these elections and it's distracting him from all of his regularly scheduled evil.

Another constitutional good is the fact that the impeachment will permanently mark the Trump Presidency historically as a violation of laws, customs, and democracy.

Which will restore some of the luster of government's crown (and I know the irony for my saying that).
