US Politics - Impeachment Proceedings

Go To

This thread is intended for a civil, focused discussion on the various impeachment proceedings of President Trump and others in the administration.

Keep in mind that this is a narrowly focused thread, created to more closely manage this topic of discussion. The pros and cons of said impeachment were soft-banned in the General US Politics thread for a few months, due to incessant arguing. However, there is a high desire to discuss said events and it is of such high prominence that we are willing to give this devoted thread a try.'

Things to keep in mind:

  • This is about impeachment, votes on, investigations on, inquiries in, articles on, etc. Other American political discussions should go into the General Politics thread.
  • Standard rules apply. Civility and appropriate forum conduct are paramount.
  • Circular arguments about pros/cons are what got the topic banned in the first place. If we feel it's going circular, we will intervene. Multiple intercessions will not be looked on kindly.
  • As for that intervention, mods will be monitoring and moderating this thread more closely due to the nature of the topic, and its history in the General Politics thread. We will warn and thump in an effort to keep this thread on-topic and civil, but we are more than willing to lock it if people aren't willing to course-correct.

This thread doesn't have to be a case of Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things, but it will be, if necessary.

Look at it this way:

Everyone knows Manchin is a conservative Democrats

No one's saying Romney is a liberal Republican

Therefore, "the remove side is more bipartisan" has more weight lol

So Manchin is a definitive "No" on Removal? Sucks, but expected.

For the life of me, I can't understand why Manchin doesn't just switch parties.

Seems like he'd be much more at home with his fellow Republicans

At the risk of a stupid question, what are the odds of a 51-49 to convict? I heard someone named Sinema is also voting to convict but the name doesn't ring any bells so I don't know if they're a Republican or Blue Dog Democrat.

[up][up] 52-48 to acquit, since Romney's the only Republican defector currently?

Well folks, looks like it's the end of democracy in America, time for an authoritarian Republican oligarchy.

Also, the Mitt Romney vote isn't that surprising (since he's one of the few GOP senators that showed his disgust on what Trump did with Ukraine), but is he the only GOP senator that voted to convict Trump over acquitting him?

[up]Not being sarcastic on this, the GOP just basically give Trump a thumbs up to do whatever he wants and okaying him to investigate and silence his political opponents as he pleases. Basically, the GOP okayed the president to be as authoritarian as he can be.

It’s not the end of democracy, there is a genuine risk of Trump escalating, perhaps to more brute force methods (I fear what Trump might ask a country to have their embassy security (who carry diplomatic immunity) do for him).

However we do not know what comes next, Ukraine was in a pretty vulnerable position, I have a hard time thinking of a country that would we willing to act even more openly in support of Trump.

Still, I hope Hunter Biden has a security detail.

The US isn’t any less a democracy than it was last week. It’s certainly not a dictatorship or autocracy now suddenly.

The chance that Mitt Romney will defect to the Democratic party, or even become an Independent is, I would say, hovering right around zero. He votes along with the rest of the Republicans 80% of the time; he just doesn't personally like Trump. Many of his constituents feel the same way.

He has four years until he faces re-election to win back those who will hold this vote against him in Utah.

West Virginia was run as the personal fief of Robert C. Byrd (pork loving KKK Democrat) for a long time and it's a very different sort of situation in the state there for Joe Manchin. Manchin and the other Democrats there are heavily involved with the corporations that own the majority of the land and businesses in the state. They call themselves coal companies but they're actually "energy" companies and in no economic danger whatsoever since the vast majority of their money comes from natural gas and oil. They're accompanied by "health" companies that are actually the state's largest employers that use ACA to keep much of the state employed.

The Democratic/Republican divide isn't really the same as it is in other states because both parties are all about scratching the other's back financially with the argument what is good for the corporations is good for the people. On the other hand, Manchin is the polar opposite of getting benefits for the public as, say, Mitch 30 miles away. West Virginia is all about getting as much money for the public and public works as possible.

What comes next is more politics. Until the 2020 election.

Then, after that, we have more politics until the 2022 election.

From there, more politics until the 2024 election.

And then again until the 2026 election. Repeat ad nauseum.

The biggest problem with how people treat politics is that they always want to leap to the Roll Credits moment. Every time something happens, people try to treat it like the ending. It doesn't matter if it's a Happy Ending or a Downer Ending, so long as it's an ending. "Democracy is saved forever!" "Democracy is doomed forever!" Etc. etc.

But what is actually going to happen is that democracy will continue. The fights we've been fighting, we'll still have to fight. The struggles we've been struggling, we'll still have to struggle. This act is complete and now it's on to the next one, and then the next, and then the next.

Life doesn't have endings.

I do find it hilarious how damn near everyone here expected Jones and Manchin to vote against impeachment.

I don't know about Jones, but didn't Manchin at one point say that he was voting against impeachment?

Or, maybe I'm thinking of when he said he was going to leave the Democratic party to be a Republican?

That is Manchin, right?
