Was the girl in the first panel the 2 people fused from the Self Hug draft? I know next to nothing about Steven universe so that first panel is a bit confusing.

I'm seeing two characters that I've never seen before in anything relating to the show, who are bystanders to more important characters, meeting and falling in love.
I still don't get how it illustrates the trope. It shows two random guys who suddenly become love interests to each other. It doesn't show how they correlate to the other characters.
The universe is under no obligation to make sense to us.
I thought the image was enough on its own. If I added the correlating relationship images, it would make it too long, which is also the reason why I combined the last two images in the third panel.

Panel 1 is about a guy who's looking around and see nobody to partner up with in whatever event he's in. Same with panel 2. So at the end they decides to partner up with each other.
I see a Meet Cute or something in the suggestion; I don't see the relationship/s they are spares of.

When I see a bride and groom saying "I do," the next thing I expect to see is them kissing, not some other couple. Without the red circles, my mind would have glossed over the fact that the hair colors don't match—and even with the red circles, I'm still not very comfortable with it.
The red circles show who the "spares" are. It's certainly the best image thus far.

The image, added without discussion, is misused since the Spares in question are not paired in-work (it's not YMMV so fans pairing them don't count), they don't even get Ship Tease (at least until the finale which we aren't allowed to show or mention due to being leaked). Also one of the pairs is only teased, and the other has yet to go as far as Official Couple.
