Unreleased Work Page Cleanup (Speculation, Spoilers, ZCE etc.)

Go To

This is a thread for checking up on pages for works that have not been released yet, to make sure that they are not straying into rampant speculation or posting crazy behind the scenes spoilers. You can bring both individual examples or entire pages to attention here.

In extreme cases, any page can be locked, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

(As these pages often are hit with zero-context examples and shoehorning as well, all four - speculation, spoilers, ZCEs, and shoehorning may get addressed simultaneously.)

The policy governing this effort is Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work. Cleanup is being tracked using the Unreleased Works sandbox.

All pages for unreleased works should include a %% comment at the top of the page, confirming the policy and linking to this thread and the Administrivia page. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the example provided here, but this provides a template to work with.

Template for the unreleased work comment

%%
%% For unreleased works where all we have to go on is advertising and other supplemental materials, we have some detailed guidelines, which can be found at Administrivia/CreatingAWorkPageForAnUnreleasedWork.
%%
%% NOTE - these rules also mean that unreleased works should only have one page image, and that image should NOT be changed again until the work is released.

RT 1986, you seem to not be getting it. What having citations in the context means is simple:

  • She's a Man in Japan: As seen in the trailer, female Green Ranger Izzy takes the place of male Ryusoul Green Towa from Ryusoulger. Notably, this is the first time the trope has come into play since the Yellow Ranger was changed from male to female in Power Rangers Wild Force (and the first time it's been used with the Green Ranger rather than Yellow).

Obviously this can be rewritten for better flow. But all you need to do is say which promo materials show it.

[up] That's what I'm actually trying to say. [lol] Anyway, thanks for the feedback. [tup]

I'll just put them back once the show premieres so we all wouldn't be stressed. [lol][lol]wink

The page can be cut for being a stub without three proper tropes, mind.

I brought this up in Final Fantasy XVI's thread, why are we assuming the trailer is not showing gameplay footage? It's a PS5 game, there's every reason to assume that's actual gameplay footage, not prerendered cutscenes, especially given how the characters move in the trailer. As such don't we have the two out of three requirements for a trope page? Gameplay footage and an announcement (the trailer is prerelease material)?

It's because we can't assume anything based on promo material. There's always the chance the assumptions will be proven wrong. We can only trope the promo material in isolation and not jump to any conclusions until the actual work is released- hence why we need to cite it.

So what do we consider gameplay footage then? Does it have to be people playing demos?

Like Hollow Knight: Silksong has a page (we don't have a release date but we have a trailer), we don't see any people playing it, but it's obviously gameplay footage. Why is Final Fantasy XVI different? Nevermind for silksong; I forgot about e3 demos...

Demos can change. You can cite "people playing demos" or "pre-release gameplay footage" without implying it's how the actual work will be.

Well this still doesn't answer my question, what counts as gameplay footage? For the sake of argument let's say we only had the Silksong trailer and not the e3 demos. Would that not be enough for a trope page?

IDK, really. I don't actually pay attention to pre-release information or footage so I don't know how to classify what; I can only explain the actual policy.

This is starting frustrate me a bit, what was shown in Final Fantasy XVI is almost certainly gameplay footage, but okay the website doesn't consider it that. What does count as gameplay footage?

Footage of people playing the actual game when it's released?

Seriously, the rule is there so that people don't speculate and jump to conclusions based solely on pre-release information that might be inaccurate. It's not that big of a deal.

Okay I think I understand, something like e3 demos would count, or just footage of people playing it. Or maybe a developer walkthrough of what they're currently working on.

[down]Yes I saw that, you still can sight it.

Producers have lied about this kind of thing. And even if it is genuinely gameplay footage, that doesn't mean the gameplay won't change before the final release.

e: I've sort of lost track of this conversation; what is this question relating back to?

I believe this is about What counts as gameplay footage? Which work is irrelevant, as knowing how to determine gameplay vs cinematic pseudo-gameplay would be useful in general.

So we can know when to start a trope page. Judging by the rules of Creating a Work Page for an Upcoming Work.

Bringing up a couple of issues with Raya and the Last Dragon:

As I brought up a few pages ago, doesn't a work need to be released before it can have a fandom, because otherwise then would these Friendly Fandom examples be misuse, since it needs to go both ways between fandoms?:

And from the same page does the work need to be released for They Copied It So It Sucks to apply?:

I say just remove the Friendly Fandoms entry. Disney is one of few companies that can manage to drum up a huge pre-release fandom for stuff that doesn't have source material, but I don't think we should make exceptions for them.

They Copied It, Now It Sucks was already removed. I agree with the deletion since we don't yet know if it "sucks".

Not sure this is exactly the right thread for this, but

Creating a Work Page for an Upcoming Work has a bit in the "after the thing gets released" section that goes

if they talk about content that did not make it into the final product, they should be deleted or moved to the Trivia subpage as examples of What Could Have Been, Dummied Out, or other appropriate trope.

The thing about this is that Dummied Out is not currently classified as a Trivia item.note  So that probably needs to be rephrased.

I was wondering about the format of unreleased work examples and their citations. For context, most examples I've seen are like this:

  • Blood Magic: In the cinematic announcement trailer, the seal to the door to Lilith's summoning chamber is activated by the injured priest and the two normal treasure hunters giving blood from their hands, and the gate that Lilith emerges from is a membrane formed out of the blood from their exsanguinated bodies.

However, I've occasionally seen them formatted like this:

  • Blood Magic: The seal to the door to Lilith's summoning chamber is activated by the injured priest and the two normal treasure hunters giving blood from their hands, and the gate that Lilith emerges from is a membrane formed out of the blood from their exsanguinated bodies. (cinematic announcement trailer)

I prefer the second version, as I feel it's cleaner and easier to fix once it's officially released, but it's also more obviously waiting to be fixed, while the first version could be on a perfectly normal page.

Any opinions on which version to use?

[up][up] The first one, because it doesn't need editing if the release never happens. The second one is bad because we don't want obvious editing for after release.

Can I have a few people verify that JustForFun.Hypecastr doesn't have any promotional material released? It's in the wrong namespace (and because of that, cannot have subpages), but if it is an unreleased work, then we still need to cut it for breaking the policies on unreleased works.

I apologize for the subpages, when working on this page I missed the rules when it comes to unreleased works and subpages. Thank you ~crazysamaritan for tagging me in this thread.

From my understanding, I believe that Hypecastr actually belongs on the Darth Wiki under Unpublished Works. I'm a new troper and wasn't aware of it when someone else created the page, and was under the assumption its place in Just for Fun was correct.

Will I be able to move my work to the Darth Wiki without issue? I've saved the tropes used on the subpages and will be reformatting them to work on a new page.
