[up] On one hand, I find that hilarious given that CGI effects became the norm eventually.

On the other hand, that does kinda suck, because the effects in Tron (the original one) are damn good. And it's not like there was some rule against it.

Maybe they should have installed that rule though. Perhaps it could have encouraged less CGI usage in feature films (but then CGI animated films might have been completely shunned...)

Still feel that the academy should have corrected the mistake later on and given Tron a "honorary award for invention in the film business" or something like that. The movie overall is a little bit meh (great concepts, questionable execution on a narrative level), but it was in a way groundbreaking.

So while Spider-Verse was the correct choice for Best Animated, anyone else think Smallfoot at least deserved a nomination? For a movie about happy singing yetis it's surprisingly deep, and has very heartfelt and relevant messages about people believing pleasant lies over uncomfortable truths, and how many people on both sides of social divides see each other as totally evil and thus prevent true reconciliation.

It should have at least been considered but it's all to do with how it was marketed,to have even a chance of winning you need a lot of attention, accemdy may have looked at the film and gone "Literally who?"

I think Smallfoot is way too much of a meh movie in my opinion.

Yeah, too mediocre overall. It's really not difficult to find a decently animated movie with a nice message nowadays.

I mean, almost every animated movie has some aesop or another. Commending an aggressively mediocre and forgettable one for having An Aesop seems... unnecessary.

To me, the acting nominations for The Favorite seem backwards.

The movie (to me at least)seems to focus more on Emma Stone & Rachel Weitz while the Queen is more of a key supporting character.

This is hardly the first time an Oscar-nominated role has raised questions on what category it belongs to. For example, Tom Hulce was nominated for the 1984 Best Actor Oscar for my all-time favorite film, Amadeus. Even though the film gets its title from Mozart's middle name, I still feel Amadeus was Salieri's movie and Mozart was a key supporting character.

There's also the cases of Anthony Hopkins winning Best Actor for Silence of the Lambs despite having very little screen time, Marlon Brando getting Best Actor for The Godfather while Al Pacino was nominated for Supporting Actor in a total reversal of their roles and while I hate to bring it up because of who he is, The Usual Suspects earned a Best Supporting Actor for Kevin Spacey despite him having half the lines.

I think the only one of those I'd really defend is Anthony Hopkins. He doesn't have a bunch of screen time, true, but he gives an absolutely chilling performance that really had an impact on the audience.

I saw Green Book Today.

Quite a few people weren't too happy to see this win Best Picture. I liked it but I think it's the least of 5 Best Picture Nominees (haven't seen Roma, Star Is Born or Vice).

The biggest problem I had with Green Book is I found it rather predictable. Some things are kind of surprising but usually I could see where this movie was going.

Green Book won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy/Musical Motion Picture. I never got monster laughs out of it (except for a well-earned "Flipping The Bird") but it did make me chuckle here and there.

Credit to Mahershala Ali for becoming the first person to appear in the same year's Best Picture and Best Animated Feature. In the first 18 years of the Animated Feature Oscar, Spiderverse is the 10th Animated Feature that I liked more than the same year's Best Picture. That has more to do with my love of animation than recent Best Pictures lacking quality.

I knew that Green Book was distributed by Universal but I didn't know that Dream Works was also involved in production of the film. I find that interesting since 2018 was the first time in 19 years that Dream Works did not release an animated feature. I believe that this is Dream Works' second Best Picture after Gladiator.

The day after the Oscars, some articles on Bing.com listed Green Book's Best Picture win as an upset. That confused me as I thought winning Producers Guild cemented Green Book as the Best Picture front runner.

I saw Mirai on Saturday. Here's how I rank the 2018 animated features I've seen

11. The Grinch 10. Sherlock Gnomes 9. Hotel Transylvania Summer Vacation 8. Smallfoot 7. Ralph Breaks The Internet (Oscar Nominee) 6. Teen Titans Go To The Movies 5. Incredibles 2 (Oscar Nominee) 4. Mirai (Oscar Nominee) 3. Early Man 2. Isle Of Dogs (Oscar Nominee) 1. Spiderman Into The Spiderverse (Oscar Winner)

I haven't seen the 2013 animated feature nominee Into The Wind but of the other 17 years, this is the 12th time I thought the Animated Feature Oscar actually went to the best nominee. If I had my way: Cars, The Illusionist, When Marnie Was There, Kubo & The Two Strings and Loving Vincent all would have won Animated Feature Oscars. As for how Spiderverse compares with my perception of other Animated Feature Winners:

18. Happy Feet 17. Incredibles 16. Shrek 15. Ratatouille 14. Toy Story 3 13. Finding Nemo 12. Zootopia 11. Brave 10. Up 9. Inside/Out 8. INTO THE SPIDERVERSE 7. Big Hero 6 6. Rango 5. Coco 4. Frozen 3. Spirited Away 2. Wallace & Gromit Curse Of The Were-Rabbit 1. Wall-E

I did a post on the 2018 Animated Feature Oscar so I'd like to flash forward to the 2019 Animated Feature Oscar.

2019 will be showdown between colossal Disney sequels: Toy Story 4 vs. Frozen II. One of these movies will likely become the first film series with two Animated Feature Oscars. Lucky for Disney that Spider-Man will only hit theaters this year in live-action form. Aside from the question of whether TS 4 can beat FII at the Oscars, it'll be equally interesting to see whether TS 4 outperforms FII at the box office. Disney Plus will launch on November 12 which could likely be the day TS 4 is released on home video and I seriously doubt that's a coincidence.

The best chance to prevent the 2019 AF Oscar from becoming a Disney worship is How To Train Your Dragon 3. This Dreamworks franchise will likely become the first series with 3 AF Oscar nominations (if only because Toy Story 1 and 2 predate the category). Dreamworks' Yeti film Abominable (September 27) could get the movie awards love that Warner Bros. never got for Small Foot. Dual nominations for HTTYD 3 and Abominable would make 2019 the 3rd time Dreamworks was double-nominated for the Animated Feature Oscar.

Blue Sky didn't have much luck with the Animated Feature Oscar with regards to their Rio films. Sony had no more luck with Angry Birds in 2016. Perhaps Blue Sky will have more luck with their next bird film, Spies In Disguise (September 13) while Sony hopes 2nd time is the charm with Angry Birds 2 (August 16).

Missing Link has not been blowing away audiences or critics like Laika films usually do. It's very possible (but not definite) that Missing Link will be Laika's first Animated Feature snub after it's first 4 films were all Oscar-nominated. It could get nominated just on the reputation of the studio. After all, Brave is often considered one of the weakest Pixar films and that still won an Animated Feature Oscar.

Lego Movie Sequel didn't impress many audiences or critics. It could get nominated just because of all the people (not me) who feel Lego Movie should have won the 2014 Animated Feature Oscar or at least got nominated.

While Wonder Park didn't bomb but I don't see it as having much of a chance of getting an Oscar nomination.

The Addams Family Movie (October 11) has a promising trailer but I don't think it much of a chance of getting nominated. Than again, I didn't think Frankenweenie was going to get nominated for the 2012 AF Oscar.

I think missing link has a chance for a nomination if for no other reason that there are a lot of sequels and not particularly exciting projects this year. Plus, it will be Laika's last movie for a while.

Honestly, what is it with the current influx of animated movies regarding some sort of big food character?
