Fun fact, the Men in Black comics the movies were loosely adapting had the MiB covering up all the weird stuff people weren't supposed to see. Aliens, ghosts, magic, etc. They also weren't strictly the good guys like in the movies. K has no empathy for the populace and has used the neuralizer to makes witnesses kill themselves.

A properly cynical MiB movie wouldn't be too out of place in the Ghostbusters universe. It would at least explain why everyone was so dismissive of the Ghostbusters after the Gozer incident.

I might be biased because Sufficiently Analyzed Magic is one of my favorite tropes, but I think there's actually a lot of story potential, especially if you're willing to expand the world building and make the existence of paranormal stuff common knowledge. (Which really should have happened in the first sequel imo.)

Rival ghostbusting teams with different methods and ethics, corporations and governments trying to profit on it in different ways etc.

For all it flaws, Beyond: Two Souls's concepts of weaponized ghosts and a planned military invasion of the afterlife were legitimately interesting and kind of cool.

Still a great "screw depression" song even after seven years.

Extreme Ghostbusters had an episode with a couple of MIB expies, IIRC.

Which was basically a big in-joke, as both shows were made by the same company and shared character designers. So did Godzilla The Series, btw.

Understandably she's upset, but equating it to move like something Trump would do is only going to met with derision by those who saw it as a bad film,I've never seen it so I can't really comment it's overall quality

Yeah. I get why she's angry: her movie got a lot of shit heaped on it for reasons that had nothing to do with its actual quality (well before it even came out) but playing the Trump Card not only sets her up as adversarial, but might inspire those who hated the movie (for both legitimate and not so legitimate reasons) to start firing back, thereby creating controversy that no one might actually want.

She is right that the 2016 cast got a bum deal though. Make no mistake about that.

Jones has not exactly shown the best online etiquette, she has a history of retweeting numerous racist comments made towards her and functionally screaming the "Trump" card any chance she can. The louder you get does not endear you to anyone.

There are rumors the '16 cast will be integrated somehow, so even that is premature.

[up]I hope those rumors are false. The best thing they can do is pretend 2016 never happened, let the new cast of teens or whoever stand on their own without the controversy bolted onto them.

Then again, I hated Leslie Jones' character for being an unfunny stereotype.

I actually found Patty to be one of the better parts of the last movie, which I genuinely enjoyed overall (though I ultimately believe it's an average film). But I also liked the second film, which I only recently found out wasn't as well regarded as the first movie, so I guess I'm just weird like that...note

Anyways, I'm kind of upset that this new movie may ignore the previous one, even if I get why they'd want to. And friends of mine have already decided that the new movie is "just" trying to cash in on the popularity of Stranger Things when they heard the new leads will be younger than usual (I've never seen the show so I have no idea what they mean by this). So I'm not quite sure if I'm looking forward to this one or not yet.

Still, I'm happy if the franchise continues and the reception of the last movie didn't kill it off.note

I disagree on the stranger things comparison. Stranger Things is Alien by way of It with the character cast of Stand By Me. The kids are just kids.

Jones gets no sympathy from me. Sounds like such a straw(wo)man's response of jealousy. If these are the kinds of people who worked on the 2016 interpretation, then I'm glad I didn't see it.

[up] There were stories regarding the film's director being kind of a jerk. I thought Dan Aykroyd said something about not treating the cast well.

Aykroyd said that Feig ignored people pointing out some vital elements that needed to be filmed, only to require costly reshoots when it was confirmed they really DID need it. I didn't hear anything about bad behavior on set, but he definitely did not have a good opinion of Feig. He did go out of his way to praise the cast themselves.

Indeed. To say nothing of their absolutely childish responses to James Rolfe not wishing to see it (and not because of anything political, he just didn't care for the visuals).

The only thing James Rolfe did in his "No review" video that annoyed me, was he took Rick Moranis' "It makes no sense to me" quote, completely out of context.

As far as I’m concerned Leslie Jones doesn’t get to have a say in this anymore than Rob Zombie did with Halloween (2018). At least Rob didn’t typecast the people who like the idea of that film to Trump voters.

I mean, given what Jones went through when the 2016 film came out, I really can't blame her for being emotional over this. She faced the absolute worst of the backlash, many (but not all) of whom targeted her specifically because of her race.

Considering how she summarily called the critics of the movies a bunch of overreacting idiots, she gets zero sympathy from me. As such, I find her rants against this movie to be nothing but immature and pathetic.

If it's a rant against misogynists, alt-right, etc that's totally fine. But Sony never supported them and neither does the new director, so this whole bit about Trump supporter comparison is utterly insulting and yet another bullet to her own feet.

When she got attacked by internet hate mongers, even though I was not sympathetic to herself I wanted to see the perpetrators arrested and prosecuted. For this latest comment, though, I hope she either apologizes for it or suffer the consequences.

It’s a non-starter argument made in bad faith, along the lines of “If you don’t watch this show you’re a homophobe!” And I have no sympathy for her sticking her foot in her mouth.

Sometimes remakes flop. Sometimes characters don’t go over well. Sometimes bad things happen in the creative process. You can’t just say “if you don’t like this you’re a bad person!” because that is how you alienate people and make them ignore any serious issues you have.

Seriously, 2010s saw many remakes flopping or doing mediocre at best. There were Total Recall, Robocop, Magnificent Seven, A Nightmare on Elm Street (yes, that happened), Death Wish, Ben-Hur(why...just...why), and the list goes on and on and on. Remakes are no longer safe box office investments, unless you are Disney.

But apparently it was so shocking when Ghostbusters reboot became a disaster and there had to be a conspiracy.
