Shao Kahn certainly found out the hard way that the Elder Gods take their rules regarding Mortal Kombat seriously.

Though not a shock we knew for a while the Elder Gods only do something when it threatens them directly.

That was still pretty dumb how they finally came to action. It was anti climatic since their power up didn't make Shao Kahn any less difficult than his usual boss fight. Not that he's all that hard to beat to begin with. Especially compare to his MK 2 & 3 boss fight. Stupid perfect A.I

Well... nobody said the Elder Gods were smart. By definition they might consist of a bunch of senile cosmic beings too old to even know they're omniscient.

Yeah I'm still disappointed the Elder God power-up did jack-squat gameplay wise.

If anything, it's past raiden's fault he didn't say "Shao Kahn must win"

Although i'm pretty sure winning any of the first two tournaments would have let him actually conquer Earthrealm.

I don't think Shao would have sat there an let him dictate precise instruction... plus Dark Raiden had taken multiple blows to the head from Blaze empowered Shao Kahn

so he may not have been thinking straight at the moment

Please, Mortal Kombat characters can have their eyes stabbed out and their leg bones shattered and suffer no impairments. A few hammer blows to the head would be nothing.

What's interesting to me is that it's unlikely Raiden came up with letting Shao Kahn win in the heat of the moment. Like. The heat of the moment is him getting the shit beat out of him by Shao Kahn. It's hard to think of anything more complex than "OW MY SPLEEN" or "LIGHTNING! LIGHTNING RIGHT THERE! RIGHT NOW!"

It's just too clever for a guy throwing up a last-ditch spell just before his skull gets turned into chunky salsa. It makes me think that Raiden's actually thought about this in the past. Like, it's not a brand new idea to him, but something he's considered before but never had a means or motive to act on. It's something he's been musing over. "Look at all of this carnage around me. What would the realms be like if me and my champions had just let Shao Kahn violate the rules of Mortal Kombat and forced the Elder Gods' hands?"

Like. This time travel spell he cast isn't exactly something we've seen before, either. Maybe he had to research it, but never went through with doing anything with it because it's The Devil You Know versus The Devil You Don't. Who knows, maybe letting Shao Kahn win means he blows up all the realms and somehow kills the Elder Gods or some shit. Maybe everyone turns into tang. Maybe the One Being comes back. You never know with time travel.

So I don't think he really had an answer to that question. He just felt in his gut that letting Liu Kang take matters into his own hands when Shao Kahn violated the laws maybe didn't work out for the best. And when there was literally nothing left to lose, he made a Godzilla Threshold choice to put his insane plan into action, taking a chance on a new reality where Shao Kahn received divine punishment and exploded into a million pieces instead of slinking back to Outworld to plot his next heresy.

And I think that's why Kronika is calling bullshit. It's not about wanting the heroes to win or wanting the villains to win. It's about Raiden rubbing his balls on her domain. The only question I'm unclear on is why she waited so long to act.

Maybe there was a threshold for how many changes could occur without damage to the Grand Scheme of Things. It seems like what amounts to changing an Elder God's fate is what made the difference, since Kronika specifically says that wasn't supposed to be Shinnok's fate.

[up][up]I agree with your assessment. Kronika’s basically a time wraith. If you’re changing time, she’s going to put it back. Doesn’t matter to her what the results are.

Now, as for why she waited so long, I can think of two possibilities. One: she’s got time powers. 30 years is ultimately nothing to a being like her. And perhaps this specific moment is simply the one she judged easiest to succeed from.

Two: it was still possible for the timeline to correct itself until Raiden beheaded Shinnok. Maybe with Shinnok off the table, things are too far off the rails and now she HAS to get involved personally.

Alternatively, it could have been Quan Chi's death that tipped the scale. The Netherrealm invasion at the start of MKX is, as I understand it, basically MK4. After that Quan Chi and Shang Tsung were the catalysts for the plot in discovering the Dragon King's army. One might have been able to do something with the other, but with both dead one of the major events that leads to more powerful kombatants and, by extension, Armageddon, no longer has and real way to happen because nothing from Deadly Alliance onward has no path forward.

[up][up]That’s what I’m thinking. That the divergences were correctable, right until Shinnok was beaten by the Earthrealm Teen Titans and the Netherrealm’s power structure was completely upended. It’s gone south.

That or she's getting involved cause something Worse is now on the table

Remember Dark Raidan Wastes all the other realms'Even those who are allies' so only Earth Realm remains which is also a Cosmic Fuck up. 'and its Telling the last two standing at Armageddon are him and Shao and Blaze still exists waiting for the moment to highlander his power away.

Decent Thoughtful Raidan isn't around anymore only Angry Tired of this bullshit Raidan is... basically the coinflip is no longer Heads Shao Kahn wins, Tails Raidan wins but the aftermath is largely the same.

Perhaps Kronika is going for something different... the coin lands on its edge

@Tobias Sorry a bit confused here. If letting Shao Khan win wasn't Future Raiden's plan what was his plan?

His plan was letting Shao Kahn win. What I'm suggesting is that he probably didn't really have much idea about what would happen past that. It was a gamble, equivalent to shooting Child Hitler in the head and hoping for the best. Maybe it means we don't have a WWI! Maybe it means we lose and Nazis rule forever. Who knows? That's what happens when you chuck a wrench into history.

He acted on it once the answer to "what happens next?" became "Anything, literally anything, would be better than this."

And it did work out, but only kinda. Shao Kahn was punished by the Elder Gods for his transgression, but nearly all of Earth's defenders were brutally murdered and became Netherrealm Revenants. Outworld's still a thing, just under new management and with a few jealous hands eying the throne.

From the perspective of, say, MK:DA Raiden looking out at the world, it's a crazy idea that'd be stupid to go through with. A lot of shit would have to go wrong before kicking history in the nertz and hoping it doesn't doom us all starts to seem like a good idea.

Form the perspective of Armageddon Raiden looking at the hammer coming down, a lot of shit has gone wrong and kicking history in the nertz and hoping it doesn't doom us all is basically the only idea that a god about to get his skull crushed has left.

And. Like. I think Kronika doesn't agree with that assessment. Especially if it turns out that Kitana's MKX ending is a real thing and, further along the timeline, Kitana winds up taking down the Pyramid-empowered Shao Kahn.

Like, Earthrealm got f*cked but to a god-being who surveys all of history. Like. That's life? Civilizations come and go. That ain't Kronika's problem, and from her perspective, she probably just sees Raiden as some asshole who panicked and f*cked with time to save his own ass.

Bayonetta hinted for "Mortal Kombat 11".

Considering what was teased for Bayonetta 3, I don't think this is surprising.

I know it's an M Rated game but was Bayonetta ever a gory game?

I wonder if she is going to be Goro sized

[up]Compared to others in her guest spots she’s about 6 feet in heels. It’s just her games has hilariously exaggerated proportions for everyone. Hardly Goro size.

That would be the weirdest.

There was some degree of gore in Bayonetta, but it was almost never centered on the more humanoid characters.

I think it'd be pretty strange to see her disemboweled and what not. I could see her performing graphic finishers, but not suffering them.

Well my reasons for Bayonetta to be a guest:

  • She's sexy as hell
  • Time travel is the perfect excuse to bring in an Umbran witch whose franchise is basically one big causal loop.
  • She turns most of her enemies into viscera and that's perfect for MK.

My problems with it though:

Kratos gets tuned up just as much he gives back, so it makes sense, and they still had to change his model to be more aggressive/defiant in death than the other kombtants (look at how he reaches for Freddy before the latter slams him inside of a boiler). You can see Freddy and Jason and Alien in MK because, yeah, they get carved up like Christmas dinners in their movies. A lot.

Bayonetta doesn't really get wounded in her game, so much as occasionally blasted or paralyzed by a magic bolt, or matched in an exchange of punches/kicks. She usually one-shots her foes with her magic guns, or lets her hair demons devour them. But, I mean, I really can't see her getting a leg chopped off, or getting dragged across the ground into a spinning saw.

  • She's already in Smash Bros

She's ok in Smash Bros where the enormity of her skillset can be utilized in quick succession - Wicked Weaves, Witch Time, giant dragon monsters. But she works much better in a game like Anarchy Reigns that at least allows for three-dimensional movement.

  • Her fighting style is too nuts

Bayonetta's highly acrobatic fighting style, what with her hopping onto her back and shooting with her feet, flying through the air on the regular, and switching between gun, sword, fists, and tentacle whip among other contraptions just wouldn't translate to the relatively limited moveset allowed to Mortal Kombat characters.

Smash Bros already allows for a range of movement that lets plenty of characters function. You could put Scorpion into Super Smash Bros sure. You can't really put Samus or Little Mac into Mortal Kombat.

  • She's not very unique mechanically

We already have a fighter who manipulates time, and a character with a spammable gun move they could use, and plenty of characters with swords. The only thing about her besides being sexy as hell is having demons that'd probably be too OP and too cinematic to use in a standard match.

Now, ignoring all of that, seeing as Bayonetta and Persona 5 are in Super Smash Bros, I'm open to just about any crossover we can get. But Bayonetta? In MK? I just don't see it.

So, Anarchy Reigns, Smash Bros, and now Mortal Kombat. I wonder how many of these fighting games, if any, are canon to Bayonetta lore.
