- We recently discovered that a non-US IP address was hitting us with thousands of SQL injection attempts, none of which succeeded. They did, however, put additional load on the database. This wasn't intended as a DDoS attack per se but rather an attempt to take control of the site.
- The administrators activated additional security measures on our Cloudflare firewall that have had the unintended side-effect of causing frequent ReCAPTCHA prompts for users. We are aware of this problem and working on a resolution.
- Improvements to new user registrations and the user experience when suspended or banned. See this post for details.
Mar 21th:
- The adblocker bug (popup message) will now appear for logged-in users after a certain threshold of page views has occurred while blocking ads.
- You may snooze the bug for up to 7 days at a time if you have contributed to the wiki (by editing articles) recently.
- There is now a subscription option to use TV Tropes ad-free for certain periods (monthly, yearly).
- You can use this link to access the subscription system.
- Subscriptions use a third-party payment facilitator called Stripe. TV Tropes does not collect or store any of your payment information. You will be rebilled at the indicated interval unless you cancel.
- Subscriptions are linked to your account. If you change accounts, or are banned, you will lose your subscription.
- Additional subscription options are being considered or are in development.
- The badge advertised as a reward for subscribing appears not to be working currently.

Heads-up for a site update coming later today or tomorrow. This update is not related to ad blocking, but mainly has to do with improving the registration and suspension experience for users. Please note that we have more updates both in planning and under development. Do not take this as a sign that other issues are not being worked on.
- The major change is that new accounts will be able to use site features that do not involve posting or editing immediately upon registration. Specifically, new accounts may:
- Manage profile settings, except for uploading avatars and setting signature/location
- Use the wiki and forum watchlists (a.k.a. "Following")
- Change viewing options (night vision, wide load, etc.)
- View all areas of the site (wiki, discussions, forums, liveblogs, reviews, TLP, queries, etc.)
- Subscribe to get ad-free browsing
- Until approved, new accounts may not: edit the wiki, post in the forums, post in discussions, post in Ask The Tropers and related boards, write or respond to reviews, write or respond to liveblogs, participate in Trope Launch Pad, send or receive private messages, use their to-do list, access forum gingerbread (avatar, signature, etc.).
- Users attempting to access any function that they lack permission for will now receive an appropriate message in the form of a modal dialog, directing them to the appropriate actions to resolve the issue. Conditions include:
- The user has not verified their account by clicking on the link in the registration email.
- The user has not received moderator approval for full access on their account.
- The user has been denied moderator approval for full access on their account.
- The user's account is too new to access that function.
- The user has received a suspension from that function.
- The user has been bounced.
- Bounce status will no longer prevent users from logging in. They may continue to have read-only access to the site as detailed above.
- The user is trying to access a moderator-only function.
- Suspension messages will direct users to What to Do If You Are Suspended, which will be updated to reflect these changes.
- Most other messages will direct users to the contact form to request assistance.

Hotfixes were deployed for the following issues:
- Users without a registered email address will no longer be told that they need to verify their account.
- Users who are in the middle of changing their registered email will no longer be told that they need to verify their account.

So, e-mail verification isn't required to use the site? I kept on getting a message every time I tried to do, well, anything a few hours ago.
The message even appeared when trying to view TLP's. Not edit, just view them. Was that intentional or was it a glitch? AFAIK, people who aren't logged in can view TLP's just fine, so it seems weird to block out unverified accounts.

The issue is accounts that were created before email registration/verification was required. They kind of break the logic a bit. If you associate an email address with your account, you'll be fine, but we may need to iterate a bit on the accommodations for users who don't.

I saw some concerns that the recent registration changes have affected what you can do while logged out. I am assured by the admins that no changes to "logged out" privileges have been made.
What you can do while not approved has definitely changed, but that's a distinct thing. If you find yourself unable to access features while logged out that you could get to before this week, please provide specific details.

I can't seem to view users' edits pages or the launched tropes page while logged out. For both of them, I just see a "LoginPrompt" page. The urls are also different:

I'm told that the things you are talking about were not changed, but I've asked the devs to check. We already found another issue: the new code incorrectly blocked Edit Banned for users with forum suspensions.

Something random with weasels and birds
I'm someone who's been suspended for a while, but my suspension has a strange effect on my posts.
On forums such as Ask The Tropers, I wanted to try and edit my post solely on that forum at one point, only to be denied via the usual "You have been suspended from editing" despite the fact I wasn't trying to edit a main page.
Edit: However, it seems I am still free to edit posts such as this and on the suspension appeal board.

We have some site changes coming up soon. There will be more to share as we get closer, but I do have two specific items to announce.
Hotfixed today:
- Users with forum posting suspensions can post in the Edit Banned topic again. This was inadvertently broken when we overhauled the security code.
Upcoming:
- Video Examples
- We are going to launch a feature called "Video Examples". How this works is that a trope article may have, in addition to its text examples, a set of videos that illustrate it.
- These videos will live at the bottom of the page, below the text but above the indexes. Only one video will play at a time, with thumbnails in a scrollable gallery.
- By default, the videos will start playing when they become visible. They will not play audio unless clicked on.
- We will allow users to control auto-play in their profiles, to accommodate lower-performance devices or if data consumption is an issue.
- The host will be Vimeo. At launch, only moderators and admins will be able to upload new videos. We may consider opening it to user submissions but only with moderation.
- There will be a feedback component so users can tell us whether they like the feature and provide comments.
- This feature will roll out in a limited scope and then be expanded if it works out.
- The player will use HTML 5 (not Flash), in case anyone is wondering.

~Sneasel Sawashiro: Being suspended from the wiki should not affect Ask The Tropers or the forums. I'm asking about that. However, Ask The Tropers and the forums are themselves separate systems and can have independent suspensions placed on them.

We have just hotfixed an issue that caused Ask The Tropers and related message boards (Trope Finder, Query Bugs, etc.) to incorrectly block users with a wiki suspension. That section of the site has a separate suspension control.

Suggest that the auto-play be "opt in" in user profile (so it defaults to off).

Also, I'm not sure if this was a problem on your end or mine, but I had some trouble connecting to this website a little bit ago. Was it related to website changes, or just coincidental?
Also also, have you figured out what's causing the Launched Tropes page and users' edit pages to require login? Sorry if that makes me sound impatient, but I just want to stay informed on the issue.
Oh, forgot that TVTropes doesn't have a Patreon or KoFi, and stuff.
A more flexible way to support instead of, or in addition to, the current subscription model would be good?
Like 1 dollar is "Expected number of ads in a month / 4" amount of pages of no ads.
