They'll save some money but it sounds like losses are bigger then the savings, either way they're not really enduring financial hardships

Hears that Square is undergoing financial troubles to the point of canceling XV's DLC

Gee...I wonder whose fault it is. Probably wouldn't have happened had they actually polished up on XV first instead of releasing the game in its incomplete state and leaving the rest as DLC.

At this rate, I'm not even optimistic about Kingdom Hearts III because knowing Nomura/Square: The end result will just be dissapointing to give fans incentive to buy another installment/DLC for the "full" experience. Bad enough they added crap like Frozen...

There are no financial troubles and XV sold extremely well.

microsoft reps people forgot about in the great banjo v steve war of 2018.

  • master chief (deconfirmed)
  • Blinx the time sweeper (open domain, not likely)
  • Voodoo Vince (unlikely)
  • Marcus Fenix (slim chance)
  • Conker (likely if banjo gets in)
  • Sabrewulf (would be interesting, and hey we could finally see him ride the dolphin he's been talking about!)
  • Joanna Dark (slim chance)
  • Vela (probably a spirit)
  • Mr.Pants (would be a good wtf character)
  • Pinatas from viva pinata (would be a good wtf character)
  • Battletoads (slightly more likely than banjo due to new game)

you make me want to do terrible things to you~

It's not just that all of the FF15 DLC got canceled. Relatively recently (early November, so well after any negotiations SQEX had with Sakurai and Nintendo about Smash inclusion), they revealed that their first half of the financial year resulted in a loss of 3.73 billion yen. (For those who don't want to do the conversion, that's about $34 million USD, using today's conversion rate). That's a serious financial hit, and while Square Enix may be hoping that Kingdom Hearts 3 and Just Cause 4 will reverse the flow of red ink, there's also the possibility that the company will try to hedge its bets where it can (and licensing out a property to Nintendo for DLC that they don't have to spend much to work on would be almost pure profit for them).

From everything I've read, the issues so far are only affecting the original slate of FF15 DLC, so those awaiting the Switch version (as well as the Switch versions of 7, 9, and 10) don't have to worry (and given the recent PC versions of all of them, those conversions are probably fairly affordable for the company and unlikely to be at risk). That said, they're already on less stable financial footing, and if any of their upcoming titles really falls below expectations (KH3 in particular is something they're heavily counting on), all of that could be at risk.

To bring this back to Smash Ultimate DLC considerations, Square Enix is thus the company I most think has financial considerations to ponder when discussing possible DLC. I mean, I know Konami gets rightly slammed for their recent "focus on the bottom line" mentality, but SQEX is the one where they're probably the most prone to make decisions on it (for better or worse, I think Nintendo just went to Konami, said "we'll give you money to use your stuff," and Konami laughed all the way to the bank with few conditions on Sakurai). They're also the company that would thus most be prone to seeing Smash Ultimate DLC as a way to promote an upcoming project. Konami might be happy just pimping out their characters for quick cash infusion, Capcom and Bandai Namco will probably be fine as long as their legacies are appropriately honored, and Sega is ironically pretty happy to be BFFs with Nintendo at this point, but Square Enix are going to want promotion to help move recent properties.

That's also why I think anything before the Playstation 2 from Square Enix's stable is less than likely unless it's about to get a remake/sequel (sorry, Geno and Crono). While potential promotional consideration certainly is on the minds of the others, I would bet it's utmost for SQEX.

Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.

Since someone mentioned Doomguy having no personality, it's also worth noting that the majority of Nintendo's characters generally have equal amounts of characterization.

That is objectively not true.

But if we're talking about the comic, however...

I think I meant to say 'similar amounts'-and to be fair because there's been a lot more Mario games than Doom games it's a little hard to compare. But the majority of Nintendo protagonists like Mario, Link, DK, Samus Aran (aside from Other M), Red, they're somewhere in the same ballpark, particularly if we're talking the modern Doomslayer.

I'm reminded of an Extra Credits video where they take the stance of "Actions define a character" when it comes to characters like Samus and Link:

Just because Samus hasn't always had a voice or a detailed backstory doesn't mean she was a completely blank slate. As we've said before, actions define a character. We don't know a lot about Samus, but we can make a few reasonable guesses just by looking at the meager story details and game events.

Here's what we know: we know she's chosen a career in bounty hunting, dangerous work, and that she prefers to operate alone. We know she's got access to and working knowledge of enormous firepower. And whoever she is, she's proven herself capable of singlehandedly storming and toppling heavily defended bases and installations on multiple occasions.

And we've also seen she has a softer side through her interactions with the baby Metroid. And Fusion even hinted at a close personal connection she once had. Yes, it's all very vague and sparse, but there's a character in there.

Even more than that, most of Nintendo's roster emotes clearly and have clear personality traits independent of the player even if they don't speak.

Now, who are the characters with the most personality?

To me, a toss-up between Luigi, Wario, Duck Hunt and Incineroar

The whole Kid Icarus crew is also up there given the huge amount of dialogue and characterization from their own series. Same for Fire Emblem from what little I know of it, but Smash doesn’t seem to do that part justice.

It would never happen, but I'd like to see the Builder from Dragon Quest Builders in smash.

Basically Steve - JRPG edition.

Would be a good unexpected choice.

also, toon link has alot of personality for a link, since most links are blocks of meat with tiny snippets of personality. infact, ww link was very expressive for his time, nintendo has gone on record saying that they wanted to have a fully expressive character who reacted to his environments like ww link for a looong time, but do to hardware limits, they couldn't do it. in fact the only thing that was close to ww link at the time was conker both in the prototype (twelve tales) and the final product.

Also I think they could make an expressive character out of silent 3rd party reps like doomguy, Gordon freeman, master chief etc. nintendo always pays the highest respect for 3rd party reps and makes sure they were on point with animations. and they have made characters that feel alive from very little in the past (captain falcon, mr G&W, R.O.B, pirahna plant, ice climbers, pit etc.) infact smash is responsible for captain falcon's and pit's modern personas. and possibly pirahna plant's (he's already popular, just imagine a potted pirahna plant with legs be bowser or the koopalings pet, I think that frank would be a good name for him, named after frank oz of course :P)

Edit: accidently called gordon freeman "morgan freeman", whoops!

Between KH 3 and XIV's next expansion, I don't think SE is gonna be hurting from Fuckup Fantasy XV for much longer. That said, they really do need to get their heads out of their asses.
