Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
- Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
- Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
- Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

- Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
- Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
- Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
- ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
- The Cut List does not work.
- Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]

- Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]

- Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
- Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
- Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
- HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.

- In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
- Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
- In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
- The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]
- [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]

- Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]

Absolutely the only thing I consider improved is that the main page has a recent activity list, and that obviously in no way makes up for the 500 other issues.
I just tried to open my profile in a new tab by clicking "open link in new tab" after right clicking my profile icon. It took me to the Add Post screen you see when trying to post in a thread. I just tired it again, and it opened this thread. I can access my profile normally by left clicking.

So, hey, I found this on the Obvious Beta page.
TV Tropes's reworked design in 2015 was initially released with a number of errors and bugs, before being recalled and returned to the previous site design and working on those errors.
...can we do that again, please?

For me that just takes me to this thread (when I was already on the thread). I think that behavior's been that way since before this revamp.

The old style was much easier, this is way more difficult for me. In addition it can't seem to handle any editing for me. I'm just trying to edit my sandbox and profile picture like normal, and it can't handle it. I'm unable to get rid of the spelling errors! Is this a problem of the overhaul?
Not as angry as the name would suggest.
One thing about the thread watchlist - I might be okay with having the read threads still listed if they were automatically moved under all of the unread threads, rather than keep them in order of update time. It might be less distracting that way.

One weird glitch is that the new CSS forces some very awkward breaks in example text to display longer URL links on their own lines, e.g. on Audience Participation after "Doki Doki Pretty Cure had". (This glitch does not affect wiki links.)
I don't personally mind the new design, but I'm worried about all the bugs people are reporting. I don't understand much of website development, but I wonder if there would have been a better way of doing the transition. I expect bugs to show up anyways when there's an overhaul, but I wonder if there was a partial update for testing and bugfixing purposes, and if not, how hard would it have been to implement one.

Did this whole thread just break for anyone else, or it just me? I clicked the Thread Watchlist page and it took me to the Home page. I hit back, and suddenly the last 7 or 8 posts on this thread were gone. I reloaded a few time until it went back to normal, but I had to log into my account, which I was already logged in with, to write up this post.

When I type a post, the cursor, you know that flashing vertical bar that let's you know where you're going to add text too? It does not exist. I'm not sure if this is a problem for anyone else, because I don't think it's listed in one of the many many many lists of things that are broken or no longer work.
And now I'm getting logged out randomly.
I am not happy with how Night Mode has been affected by this update. I always use Night Mode when I'm on TV Tropes because it looks cooler and is easier on the eyes than bright white everywhere.
My main gripe is how headers are affected. It's white text on a light gray bar that make it damn-near impossible to see Here's an example of what I am referring to. I implore whoever is in charge of design on here to change the text or the bar to a darker so it will be readable.

I agree that the folder headers are pretty much invisible now, which makes it much harder for visually impaired people to navigate the site.
