Personally, I'm hoping that they'll open up a third dorm soon. There are now so many Valkyries that I've have run out of space for the Chibis to live in. [lol]

Aye, I have a Bronya sulking because I've put 5 chibis in a room with only two beds. tongue

Otherwise, they've apparently added a sort of "qualifying round" to enter Q-Singularis now? Is it new or is it just because I'm now in the Elite league (lvl 58)?

Aaand I've also unlocked 4 new Valkyries in a single gatcha (good thing I saved my crystals for that). Valkyrie Accipiter (Fu Hua), Shadow Dash (Mei), Snowy Sniper (Bronya) and Sünderjäger (Kallen). Most of which I have to upgrade all the way from lvl 1. Goddammit.

[up] Leveling Valkyries can be quite the coin hell, but for veterans like me it's a convenient coin dump :P

"Otherwise, they've apparently added a sort of "qualifying round" to enter Q-Singularis now? Is it new or is it just because I'm now in the Elite league (lvl 58)?"

This one has been used several updates before, just that they go back to the regular QS model afterward

Then they use it again for one update, had it run a few weeks, then it's gone again

Dunno what they want out of it though. The implementation seems arbitrary (but you can get some crystals out of the bat so there's that)

[up] Huh… weird. Thank god you could refresh the levels while keeping your points because I could not get past level 5 in those qualifiers. >.>

…I've noticed in my co-op missions that some people had already unlocked and upgraded Durandal after like 3 days. It's a bit irritating. Though not as much as lvl 35 captains playing with Azure Empyrea or Herscher of the Void. evil grin

Tried Post Honkai Odyssey on the phone and damn, I feel like playing a PS 1 game.

And some of it may be just me getting accustomed to the new gameplay, but can't you do Ultimate Evasion in midair?

[up] As in, the option is blocked or (more likely) the game froze when it tries to load the PHO stage?

Just tried it too. I had some problems at the beginning, with severe framerate drops and the game outright freezing after like 2 minutes of playing (I could move the camera but not the rest). It ran pretty smoothly on the second try though, thankfully.

Gameplay-wise it's pretty neat, though yeah, as [up] said it's pretty much DMC/Bayonetta lite. And of all things they could take from DMC, they had to put the jump button on triangle. evil grin I suppose the combat options will only increase as new abilities are unlocked, but so far I'd say Kirito and Mei's gameplays are a tad too similar, with Mei just being more flexible in midair.

Story-wise, I quite like the older Mei but I should have expected the dialogue to spoil events from the main story. =.=" Still, it's weird that this mode is included in the main game like this… it really feels like it could be a sequel game of its own.

And some of it may be just me getting accustomed to the new gameplay, but can't you do Ultimate Evasion in midair?

Not easy, but I managed to do it a couple times, so it's definitely possible.

Meanwhile in the main story… ugh, chapter 10 was pretty tedious to go through. Not that it's bad story-wise − the undewater base is gorgeous and I really like the whole arc with Bronya, the twins and Cocolia. Just hearing Bronya get angry and sound angry was a bit of a shock. Not to mention Einstein getting shot down out of nowhere…

My issue was elsewhere… namely, it feels like Mihoyo wrote the story for this part but only remembered at the last minute that this was supposed to be a game so they threw in brief combat sequences (which are also interrupted by dialogue). Thus 90% of the chapter is just… listening to people talk, often while staring at an empty background. Not exactly the most thrilling experience. The action only gets interesting at the very end when Theresa unlocks her full power. I do think this chapter would be great in anime though.

I actually enjoyed 10 for that reason, though I'll admit playing as just Bronya was a bit tedious. I think the chapter is another Growing the Beard moment for game, as an issue I had with the earlier story is that we kind of just jump into the story, and don't really get to know the characters before everything starts getting drastic, which makes it hard for me to get emotionally invested.

Like the main trio has this whole backstory to them, but we only learn as it gets dramatic, instead of getting bits of it before shit hits the fan, then getting the whole context.

Though the real problem is how low the production values are for the early chapters. 10 had that cinematic with Bronya going Kamen Rider on Tlaloc, and those C Gs.

The early chapters are mostly just the standing characters model and such. Not the best for conveying emotional drama. Though I played the game before the early chapters got reworked, so I might be confusing some things.

Tldr: The game got a lot more visual with telling the story as it went on, and the early chapters are bit lacking as a result.

I'd say Kirito and Mei's gameplays are a tad too similar, with Mei just being more flexible in midair.

Perhaps because both use swords? :P

Mei doesn't fare as well against sturdier enemies or bosses as the dude. He's more of a generalist.

I quite like the older Mei but I should have expected the dialogue to spoil events from the main story. =.="

Not when it has been stated to be an "alternate story". (CMIIW)

Still, it's weird that this mode is included in the main game like this… it really feels like it could be a sequel game of its own.

I heard that this is actually a testbed for their planned "Honkai 4".

Just hearing Bronya get angry and sound angry was a bit of a shock.

She was basically holding it for her foster mother.

My issue was elsewhere… namely, it feels like Mihoyo wrote the story for this part but only remembered at the last minute that this was supposed to be a game so they threw in brief combat sequences (which are also interrupted by dialogue).

Contrast the earlier stages where there's too much combat and too little story. :P

Normal Mode is where they put all the story contents; the real gameplay is in Hard and Supreme

I guess you're right… either way, the fact it's made for tiny smartphones hurts this game's story immersion, I feel. I don't know how games with (presumably) bigger budgets like FGO fare in that department…

edit: Wait a minute… the smartphone version does have the character sprites talking during the dialogue. ò.Ô I only have the background… and I didn't even realize there was supposed to be subtitles during those silent CGs!

Meawhile, I watched the Cooking with Valkyries series on youtube. And now I wanna try making pizza toasts. And that SakuKallen episode was [awesome] [tup] It also amuses me how China and Japan have no problem saying names from other countries − Kiana, Bronya… − but refuse to pronounce each other's names properly − Fu Hua becomes "Fuka" in Japanese while Himeko and Mei become "Chizì" and "Yeyí" (I think?) in Chinese. tongue

Now I just need a good doctor to surgically remove that goddamn theme song from my brain.

[up]No, that "Kamen Rider Bronya" is in ch. 11. I won't say much more (although you're probably already spoiled enough at this point)

the fact it's made for tiny smartphones hurts this game's story immersion, I feel.

I think it's more about the game story's very slow pacing. It takes years for them to reach chapter freaking 15. On the other hand, the supplemental materials have been bloated at that point.

the smartphone version does have the character sprites talking during the dialogue. ò.Ô I only have the background…

Some mess-up with assets download, I think

If you like Cooking with Valkyries, you'd like to read the manga version. They have added Rita and the twins' chapters as well. (And prepare to get hungry :P)

I have to try pizza toast sometime... Dante could've learned from Ziggy lol :D

And yeah, that Sakura episode is special for a good reason. evil grin

That language quirk has been there since when ancient Japan was still writing their language, I think? Chinese reads the characters in pinyin and Japanese reads them in on'yomi. Although certain modern Japanese works are willing to read Chinese names in pinyin-katakana (like Street Fighter for example).

Uuh, yeah, I tried the method given in the Q&A a few pages back, and I have the subtitles now. No wonder I was confused at the beginning of chapter 7, I had completely missed what was said at the end of chap 6. >.>

I do remember Rose Guns Days reading Chinese names like Lee Meijiu or Wang Yuanhong in pinyin-katakana.

I think they were aiming more for NieR: Automata myself. It's probably no coincidence that they dropped the realization of the robots being attempts at imitating humans (One of the main themes of Nier Automata) after you fight an Expy of Nier's Opera Boss

…Okay, I now have subtitles for previous chapters' CGs but still none for chapter 11's. Still no character sprites either.

Speaking of which, why the hell is chapter 11 so different in design? >.> Because it takes place in the Quantum Sea? It's interesting though. I only played through the first half but it's nice to finally see Seele in the story. Her voice is… less high-pitched and annoying than during gameplay, thankfully. tongue Also nice to see a version of Cocolia that never became a dick. Which means Himeko has found her match among busty Valkyries in that world I wonder what weapon she uses. I imagine her with a mecha whip for some reason.

I still have trouble getting used to the triangle jump in PHO. I keep dashing instead of jumping and vice-versa. Some of the daily tasks are surprisingly tough too!

I also finally maxed out the Xuanyuan Sword. Whew.

Hmm... I entered one of Chapter 11's Normal stages to check while using SEA's PC version, and my CG had English subtitles and character models during the dialogue.

Have you tried downloading all CGs? Maybe that'll fix your issues

To download all CGs:

Tap you Account (Found in the upper left corner of the Bridge) -> Tap CG (Near the bottom left corner of your Account page) -> Then tap Download (Found near the center top of the CG page)

This will download all CG assets in the game in advance. Note that CGs need to be downloaded again every version update.

Otherwise, it may be time to contact Customer Support and let them know there's an issue.

To go to Customer Support:

Tap the cell phone at the lower right corner of the Bridge -> Tap the Support icon -> Tap Contact CS (Note: The Support page includes lists of common questions and issues split per section. It may be best to check those first to confirm if your problem is listed there)

Speaking of which, why the hell is chapter 11 so different in design? >.> Because it takes place in the Quantum Sea? It's interesting though.

Yeah, I believe that's the Watsonian answer.

The Doylist answer though, is probably to give the players A Taste of Power with 5-Star Weapons and Stigmata in a Gacha-lite mechanic. Incidentally, would you like to purchase some Crystals and try your hand at the various Supply drops? tongue

I only played through the first half but it's nice to finally see Seele in the story.

So in case you haven't already, now would be a good time to read the Azure Waters manga that details the history of Bronya and Seele. smile

I still have trouble getting used to the triangle jump in PHO. I keep dashing instead of jumping and vice-versa. Some of the daily tasks are surprisingly tough too!

So I play with a keyboard so I'm not sure but, couldn't you reconfigure the Controls of the controller in the Pause menu screen of PHO? It's how I reconfigured PHO's controls to something I'm more used to.

Right, I forgot you could remap the buttons. >.>

I'll read that comic when I have the time, thanks. smile If they ever make a Honkai anime, how much of the main story do you think they could adapt in 26 episodes? Considering they would also have to add at least some of the side material − like, if I hadn't played Seele in special levels beforehand I would probably be like "Wait, who the eff is that girl?"

edit: Okay, I read Azure Waters. I only have two questions: a. Who the hell leaves their cleavage wide open out in the middle of Siberia? and b. Why couldn't they sacrifice Sin Mal instead? No one would have missed that bitch. ;__;

Between the Story Mode, Chronicles, manga, and Visual Novels, there's definitely more than enough for an anime series. The problem would be on how to sort it all out since some of them (like the Visual Novels and the Second Eruption manga) has enough content to be an anime series on their own.

The only thing I'm pretty sure of is that Chapter 9 would be the Season Finale. If I remember correctly, miHoYo even refers to that to it as the end of Season 1.

It'd definitely be hard to top "Final Lesson" as a season climax. The early episode should also throw in some slice-of-life moments with characters like Mei or Fu Hua and have Bronya reference Seele once in a while.

Regarding the trope page, there's probably some clean-up needed regarding the overuse of Expy − which is "a character obviously and deliberately based on another", not "a character vaguely similar to another". Listed as expies, we currently have:

  • Kiana > Noel Vermillion from BlazBlue and Bayonetta from Bayonetta. I don't know about the former, but the latter is a Shout-Out to her moveset at best, since they're completely different characters otherwise.
  • Rozaliya > Elizabeth Bathory from Fate/EXTRA. There is an uncanny resemblance I guess?
  • Tesla > Tohsaka Rin from the Fate franchise. No. The only thing the two have in common is that they're twin-tailed tsunderes − not exactly a rare character type.
  • Raven > Raven from Guilty Gear and Raven from Teen Titans. Probably more of a recurring motif than a reference to either.
  • Siegfried > Dante from Devil May Cry. Eeh… kinda? If he had been included in PHO I'd definitely have mistaken it for a DMC spin-off. evil grin

Surprisingly, the Noel one is really the only one that works. Blazblue spoilers below.

Like Kiana, Noel is actually an artificial being, a Murakumo Unit in this case, created by the villain in hopes of meeting "God". In Noel's case, it's to kill god, while Otto justs wants the Herscher that rules over death.

Noel's also a clone as well, of the MC's sister who was thought to be dead. But said sister actually got possessed into being another villain. Considering we don't know what happened to the original Kiana yet, we could see something like this in the future. Also Noel's apparently a copy of God as well, or something.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet Unless I grew it. In that case, throw it in the trash.

Jumping topics for a second - do any of you use an actual controller for playing the game on computer, and if you do, what controller do you use? I tried using the keyboard controls and found combat far too frustrating, so playing it on my laptop has been relegated to things like dorms and armada tasks. At the same time, I'm not really feeling dropping the money for a high-powered PS or X Box controller just for this.
