I watched the 90s Mario movie for the first time myself recently and that's pretty much my thoughts on it, too. It's ridiculously off-base as a movie based on Mario but dang is it just plain fun to watch it because of just how off-base it is.
"I shall not be foolish again, my dear Gwendolyn!"90s Kombat movie is pretty good. Only thing I can think of that is a deviation from lore is the fact that they made Scoroion and Sub-Zero slaves to Shang Tsung, which I'm pretty sure was just an issue with time, and then all the weirdness with Reptile. Oh, maybe Lui Kang not believing in Raiden and the Tournment at first might count, but that was ditched pretty early, which makes it kind f pointless. I also love Mortal Kombat Annihilation, but in a "This movie is absolute garbage so let's mock it like MST3K," kind of way.
I find the 90s Mario movie fascinating. It has barely anything to do with Mario, so it ends up being this funhouse mirror effect where familiar names and concepts get completely mangled into something else entirely.

"BOB-OMB!"
"Monkey!"
You can't kill art. That bob-omb somehow managed to be 100% game-accurate in a movie where nothing else was.

Not fun enough to make any money though and it made Nintendo adverse to doing adaptations for a long time.
"They truly were a Aqua Teen Hunger Force"I've heard tell that Nintendo was actually very willing to let DIC do whatever they wanted when making the The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and The Legend of Zelda (1989) cartoon. I guess that carried over to the 90s movie, but while the Super Show was a success, that movie was not, apparently convincing them not to allow anyone to adapt their stuff for the next 30 years.

For better or worse this movie was key to Nintendo actually letting anyone adapt its properties. Even if its not as good it did its job and they could improve down the line. And I think its good.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.90s MK and this movie are the best video game adaption I've seen. Sonic 1 and 2 are close seconds.
Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).How many seconds?
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.×4
Secret Galaxy mentioned that in their recent video about the Di C Sonic cartoons, Sega was actually more restrictive than Nintendo back then.
"They truly were a Aqua Teen Hunger Force"I agree with FOFD. This is a great adaptation because it extracts the essence of Mario, and plays it straight without feeling embarrassed about it. So many bad adaptations, especially of video games have no faith in their source material and try to change it up for some goddamn reason. Nintendo and Illumination understood that when people go to see Mario Movie, they want to see Mario story in movie form, and gave them exactly that.
Yeah. That's a good way to put it.
I hope Nintendo recognizes that. There's so much charm, fun, nostalgia, and love for the source material in this flick it feels like lightning in a bottle.
If more directors could just take the essence of the video game they're adapting we'd have a lot more successful video game films.
Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).Well, this is a bit surreal to see.
The Mario movie being advertised to me on an Xbox. What a world we live in.
Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonThat just reminds me of when there were rumours that Game Pass was going to come to the Switch, and now I'm sad again it didn't happen.
Technically, the Switch does have a GamePass type service. It's just that Nintendo only uses it for a tiny selection of roms.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Lately, it hasn't looked too weird considering how friendlier Microsoft and Nintendo have been, like with Banjo and Kazooie and Steve in Smash.
Now, advertising it on a Sony console would look off.
-Witty line-Imagine how Sony are feeling about the Mario movie. A part of me bets they're feeling pretty grumpy because they had an animated movie based on one of their own IP and it didn't make waves like Mario is.
Probably doesn't help that said movie wasn't even animated by Sony's own animation studio. But now that said animation studio is getting attention thanks to Spider-Man, a redo of Ratchet & Clank (or any other PS IP, really) should be a no-brainer.
But I digress. This is the Mario Movie thread, anyway.
What do you guys think of a Zelda or Metroid movie coming out because of this.
Should Link/Samus talk or no?
Should they be distantly connected to the Mario movie as part of a cinematic universe? Peach did mention there being countless worlds/galaxies out there.
Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).> Should Link/Samus talk or no?
I think like it or not Link would have to lose his non talking state, just don't make him a big talker, make him the quiet, shy guy
Samus definately should talk but she shouldn't remove her helmet or armour
New theme music also a boxNo, that is an absolutely horrible idea that I am genuinly confused why apparently a decent amount of people are pushing for. Smash Bros is one of these ideas that works as a video game but is pretty much impossible to adapt into a movie without it turning into the biggest incoherent mess imaginable.
And if this movies success leads to Nintendo pushing for Zelda and/or Metroid movies then those absolutely should not be made by Illumination, just because they made a decent adaptation of the Wahoo plumber man does not make them suddenly a good fit to make high fantasy and sci-fi horror movies.
But it will, because they want to make money and collaborating with Illumination has certainly accomplished that.
You certainly shouldn't expect them to with a studio outside of universal.
"They truly were a Aqua Teen Hunger Force"They could totally pull off Zelda, just... not any of the darker iterations. By that same token, Metroid is probably a 'no' too.
Zelda is easy to make a movie as long as you're not making a specific adaptation of a game.
You just need Link and Zelda as the main leads with Ganon as your Big Bad. And then you start picking and choosing which characters would be important to the plot.
For supporting cast:
Impa
King of Hyrule
Merchant Beedle
Fi
A fairy companion
For Ganon's minions:
Dark Link or Phantom Ganon to be The Dragon for Ganon
Classic, Iconic bosses like Gohma and Dodongo and Gleerok
Moblins, Octorocks, Stalfos, Darknuts, Wizarobes and Lynels for the stable foundation of Ganon's army
That's what I came up the top of my head.

I imagine Illumination would have the Mario adjacent stuff in the list. They'll likely look into other studios under Universal for another adaptation.
Wake me up at your own risk.
I’m gonna say it: the 90s Mario Movie is fun too. Completely fucking ridiculous, but still fun.
