He better check his dental plan or something. At least, his jaw will be mighty sore after he is done.
Wake me up at your own risk.Eh, he's Sonny Chiba's son. He can do it.
Randy Troy mentioned they most likely have the prop molded to Mackenyu's teeth so he can bite it more easily. And it's clear most of it's gonna be CG anyway.
...He's still gonna have the sharpest jawline of the seven seas though.
He's also going to have the neck of a defensive lineman. Even with just a lightweight hilt, that can't be fun.
Matt Owens seems like he's a cool genuine guy.
"They truly were a Aqua Teen Hunger Force"Owens checks a lot of my boxes for a Netflix One Piece writer: he's a big fan of the series, he's actively involved in OP's rather extensive fan community, he not only has Oda's blessing but straight-up earned his trust to do so, he's openly acknowledged and embraced the series' political nature (notable since a major criticism of Cowboy Bebop was how watered down it was from the anime), etc.
The show may well still suck but he's giving me a lot of reasons to have hope when I would have written it off otherwise. The main cast is also inspiring further hope, but we'd need to see how the rest of the cast fares - Bebop also has a really strong main cast but nothing could stop Vicious from dragging the whole thing down.
Honestly, I do not envy them for the task that lies ahead for them. As I see it, there are so many things that could look just silly if wrongly adapted... Luffy's fighting style (or heck, Devil fruits in general), Zoro's 3rd sword... all of this needs to be done right, or it will doom the series. At least Nami and Usopp start with rather basic moves.
I am also curious about the direction they will go with the humor. Initially I feared that they could tone it down a lot, ut Marvel films have shown how to properly balance humor with drama and I could see a dynamic between the Strawhats similar to the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Off the top of my head, in the East Blue, there is:
- A rubber man.
- A guy who fights with three swords, with one of them being in his mouth.
- A guy who can bloodlessly be sliced and move around the pieces.
- A circus acrobat swordsman.
- A giant white lion.
- A Fat and Skinny duo in cat cosplay who fight with claws.
- A Moonwalking hypnotist with metal disks.
- A super-fast guy wearing gloves with swords coming out of every finger.
- A guy with pearl cosplay who fights with handheld shields.
- A guy in a nice coat and hat with a freaking massive sword that goes around in a little raft and can split whole ships in a swing and schooled three-swords with a pocket knife.
- Maybe the kicking cook too depending on how they have to choreograph his fighting style.
- And a species of fish people, including an octopus and sharks.
This'll be a challenge for the people behind the SF.

Wake me up at your own risk.I somewhat expect them to change Aarlong's crew to humans because I sincerely doubt they have the budget to make them appear convincingly as Fish-Men for an extensive time. It would be a shame of course, but I think many fans would understand as long as they get the basic feel right. Kinda like Witcher fans were very happy with the first season despite its' flaws and limited effects, because it got the main characters and themes right.

They're not going to change them into humans. They might change their sizes, but they would likely still be fishmen.

Mega Man fanatic extraordinaireWell Ace wouldn't show up until Alabasta.
"They truly were a Aqua Teen Hunger Force"Right. Brain fart.
Mega Man fanatic extraordinaireNah. The wonder of makeup means they could totally have them on as Fish Men.
I just don't expect CGI as that requires way too much money if their onscreen for awhile
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."Looks like the series has officially begun production.
He/His/Him. No matter who you are, always Be Yourself.I do expect them to use makeup and careful camera angles over CG for most things. Cheaper and a touch more practical given how much fantastical stuff is part of the series.
Oh, and graphic designer Arisu Kashiwagi of Stranger Things fame re-imagined logo and brand identity design for the live-action series. According to the details:
The goal of Netflix’s live action brand identity is to further evolve One Piece into a compelling, modern brand – one that elevates the epic fantasy pirate genre while standing the test of time. By adding dimension, textural realism, drama, and a hint of humor, the new identity captures the eccentric, whimsical nature of the One Piece world and the cinematic scale of their wild, nautical adventures. While retaining many of the key elements from the original manga logo, the new logo simplifies and provides a fresh, modern look by pairing a bold, contemporary sans serif typeface with a photorealistic Jolly Roger redesigned to incorporate key details that are iconic to One Piece. The rich, weathered textures add life and realism to the title representing the many adventures that the Straw Hat Pirates crew have encountered at sea. The resulting identity stays faithful to the source material while providing a visual refresh that feels new, universally inviting, and most importantly, real.
There have been some photos showing what the Navy uniforms look like.

Jeff Ward as Buggy seems a bit off to me, but I'm willing to give it a chance. Casting a black man as Arlong might carry Unfortunate Implications though.
You lost! Then again, Oda really went hard with the racial allegory with the Fishmen, so it was gonna be a bit awkward one way or another.
Wake me up at your own risk.Alvida is inspired casting from the looks it.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."I think this is Before-Alvida.
You lost!I'm presuming they're keeping the same actress and just skipping over the "she becomes hot" tidbit, particularly given the actress is herself fairly attractive to begin with.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."
As someone who did try this as younger... Eh, a bit.
I assure you, I'm a completely trustworthy person.
