TVTropes Writing Contests - Discussion Thread

So, there have been talks in Random Questions Thread about reviving the contest.

So far, if I'm not mistaken, the following tropers have expressed the interest in participating in the contest:

• Eterna Memoria
• Kakai
• Aw Sam Weston
• Movie Reference
• Adannor
• Millership

I think we need more people to start the contest, and we need to decide on what the theme of the contest would be.

Kay I'll set up some stuff I guess since I brought it up The theme will be an Eldritch Location in the same vain of the 19th floor of Wayside.

Word Minimum:2000 Word Maximum:5000 The same scoring system will be used from before and I'd like to have two other judges on board to help with the scoring process to get different angles and cover all the bases to not accidentally give someone more or less credit than deserved.

Well, I'm not sure if it counts as complaining or pointing something out, but I will say that when the first post appeared I was considering saying that I want to join, but the theme ... well, to put it bluntly it put me off massively because I've not seen the show, it's not aired where I live, and it is something I would have to watch probably many episodes of the show for (since with just the episode where it appeared I wouldn't know what is part of the eldritchness and what is just the show's humour) just to have the idea where and how to begin.

As I wrote, it may be that I am simply complaining, but this may also be why you aren't getting more people willing to join now, and I can only guess.

I didn't watch the show as well, but after googling a little, it seems that the theme is "a floor that exists and doesn't at the same time". Which, I think, is a bit too specific to be used as a theme for the contest. Maybe just an Eldritch Location will do?

I'd be interested in participating as a contestant, though the theme might require some elaboration first. I'm all for going with "Eldritch Location" alone as a theme.

Sure just Eldritch Location will do because you have to have read the book to understand the contradicting nature of the Eldritch Location I was going for.

Yeah, I'm all for an Eldritch Location as a theme (and, as a general rule for contests, focusing on one or two tropes as the backbone).

I'd also be open to judging. If we get enough other judges I'd like to write, but I'll judge if need be.

I'm also interested in participating as a contestant.

Cool um just post entries here. Also read the entries and once you've done so rate it on the 3 things in the pages for the old contests.

I think it's better to make the judgment anonymous, as was done before:

A set deadline for submissions is probably a good idea. (The standard seems to be 4-6 weeks.)

(And you may want to make a new thread specifically for the new contest, for better visibility and clarity.)

4 weeks from this posting would be August 16. 6 weeks would be August 30. Personally I'd recommend an August 30 deadline just so it has time to generate interest.

Side note: Going off the old Writing Contest pages, nothing shows up on the Seventh and Eighth sections. Have we only had 6 writing contests so far?

It originally skipped numbers because of the theme I proposed so it's now an Artifact Title.Also if your willing you can be the anonimizer.Also yes the end of August will officially be the cut off date.

If I'm a judge, I can't be the anonymizer. Seeing the entrants' usernames would compromise my judging abilities.

Movie Reference, seeing as you're the one who resurrected this idea, would you like to be the anonymizer?

I was suggesting that Millership be the anonimizer since that dude suggested resurrecting that aspect of the contest.

Since there's been a month since the thread's start and we're less than a month away from the current deadline, it'd be helpful to know:

a) how many of those who expressed interest are still intending to participate (real life tends to get in the way of a decent number of people).

b) if there's anyone else interested in judging. Previous contests had by rule at least three judges. It could be hard to find three at this time, but I'd say we need two as a bare minimum.

Yeah, screw it, why not? I'm up for it.
