I'm wondering if I should rush through the game to get those party members...

I heard the minor citizens aren't randomized with other people's Miis anymore.

That's disappointing to hear. My favorite memory from the 3DS version was walking into Greenhorne for the first time and being greeted by Nigel Thornberry.

Speaking of, outside the castle guards and Greenhorne I haven't seen the game actually hand out default Miis to anyone like with those characters...

You don't need to rush. Party members will catch up in level quickly, plus there's some... plot developments that pretty much ensure your whole party will be around the same level by the end, save for your main protagonist being higher than everyone else.

Right. Any other advice you can give out? I know that the RPS minigame gets quickly outclassed, though there's a way to win more by observing the other hand's gestures.

Oh, and to avoid the Kind and Laid-Back personalities like the plague.

Without spoiling too much...

During the main game, there are twelve total jobs you can try out. You only get ten total party members, but your leader also gets two reclasses, so you have exactly enough opportunities to try out each job.

After beating the game you can add as many new party members as you want, plus there's two secret postgame jobs.

Every personality trait has its benefits, including Kind and Laid-Back. The game's not so difficult that you need to min-max personality trait, just go with whatever you think best suits the character in question.

If there's a trick to RPS, it's new to the Switch version, because such tricks have been thoroughly debunked on 3DS.

Our advice on game tickets is to save them for near-endgame and spend them all when there's a max-size wedge with Legendary equipment as its prize — this makes each game ticket worth ~24k gold, since you can sell the equipment if you don't want to wear it. Once you've got the catalogue, you can use this gold to boost everyone's equipment to Legendary straight off.

And yeah, while Kind and Laid-Back are "objectively the worst", the game's not nearly hard enough for this to be important. Nor, for that matter, is our above advice on game tickets. Spend em whenever you feel like it, if you'd rather do that.

I've mostly used the play tickets on the roulette when the bad prize (a snack) has comfortably low odds. This got me some early treasure, but I might consider putting it off for a while like you said, if the cost of those high-end items are that high.

Legendary weapons and armor are 30k each, yeah. Way more profitable use of a game ticket than RPS if you're not extraordinarily lucky.

[up][up][up][up]Kind is frustrating when they spare an enemy, but Laid-back is pretty good, actually. Hiding behind teammates will make them resent you, yes, but resistance to emotion-based status effects is nice and Get Serious makes you hit pretty damn hard.

[up][up][up]I don't have it yet myself, but from what I've heard/seen:

  • A more robust Mii Maker. Very robust.
  • You get a horse you can use in battle and on the field.
  • Characters can now go on outings as a way to improve their bonds.
  • Spotpass has been removed, so minor NPCs are sadly no longer auto-filled with other people's Miis. Apparently you can still choose to populate them with popular Miis, but you have to do it manually.
  • There's a small new postgame area; specifically, an even tougher version of the Tower of Dread.

Gonna pop in to note that the character page has a big problem with Zero-Context Examples and tropeless character folders — if anyone wants to take a scroll through and fix even just a few small issues, it would be very helpful.

Been playing the remake.

Outings are fun and much nicer than Jolly Jaunts. Horse feels kinda tacked-on and cumbersome, though. I could do without that mechanic.

I like the horse. It's a nice way to occasionally get in a strong attack without having to expend MP.

I'm currently making my way through Galados Island at the moment. I had nearly forgotten how annoying those Giant UFOs are with their disgusting health pools.

I've only been playing here and there, so I'm still in Greenhorne, about to go meet the Prince from Neksdor.

Who is being played by a stretched-out Mario face like the one in my avatar.

Building a relationship with the horse is incredibly easy, especially when you're going out of your way to spend MP to use MP Candies, which also end up becoming far more plentiful than they need to be. So you shouldn't worry about that.

Also should note that I beat the Final Boss. Twice. Replayed the game after knowing who's who in the cast, and wanted to prepare accordingly. Still hate that sickness mechanic...

It's not a problem with building horse relationship, the battle mechanic itself just kinda feels somewhat intrusive and awkwardly shoved into Miitopia's (admittedly not stellar, but simple and serviceable) battle system.

Double post. I'm at the late postgame and defeated over half of New Lumos' districts. I believe I obtained all, or most of the gear priced at 15k gold. But my party members no longer want to buy anything it seems, and the yellow chunk of the roulette wheel now mostly yields bunches of 10 bananas. Is there a restriction on gear past this point?

Edit: Figured it out. It depends on the level of your highest-levelled character. I've been trying to spread the exp out evenly across my main ten, but I suppose I'll have to concentrate on my hero again.

So, I've gotten around to beating the main story of the Switch port. In the end, the face that I gave to the Dark Curse is... LEGO Yoda, of all things. I sense recidivism in his near future. tongue

Anyway, I loved Miitopia on the 3DS and that feeling hasn't really changed much, but I do wish they would have taken the opportunity to rethink and revise some of the game's original issues:

  • Sickness is a bad mechanic and should have been revised or just removed entirely. There's better ways to encourage spreading EXP among the party.
  • The quests in the Traveler's Hub being clock-dependant kinda sucks. It made sense on the 3DS since a handheld is more conducive to once-a-day gaming, but console gaming is better suited to singular, long play sessions and having to wait a day for new quests is just artificial longevity.
  • It would have been nice if after beating the game, since they allow us to drop the main controllable hero from the party, they also allow us to reassign who the main controllable hero is. It's kinda weird making a party of four heroes and not getting to control any of them.

And of the new features in the port, they're hit-or-miss for me.

  • Outings are fun, and much more creative and amusing than Jolly Jaunts. I love 'em.
  • The robust Mii maker is obviously the biggest draw of this version, and boy howdy does it deliver.
  • The horse feels kinda poorly implemented and tacked-on, as I've said before. Maybe I'm just biased because I don't like horses much, but it really sticks out as a superfluous feature to me.
  • Honestly, the worst "new" feature is the removal of the randomly-chosen minor NPCs. One of my favorite moments from the original game was when I walked into Greenhorne for the first time and was greeted by Nigel Thornberry as the town guide. Having to set them all manually kinda sucks a bit of the fun out of it, and the fact that there isn't even an option to choose random Miis from online hurts.
  • The framerate seems to suffer when there's a lot of monsters on-screen or in certain locations like Ghontu Cave. I expected a little better performance from the Switch, especially when the 3DS had no such problems.
  • As far as the gameplay goes, it would have been nice to have a little more new content than just the Tower of Despair. Some other new explorable areas, a couple new classes, some new NPC roles to fill, anything really.

Miitopia is still such a bizarre, charming game and I hope this port did well enough that we get a proper sequel some day. What are some features you would wanna see in a sequel?

I'd like to see some achievements cut, like getting level 50 on all classes and obtaining all gear on one Mii, as opposed to simply spreading them out among one Mii for each class. Maybe a plot where the initial Big Bad isn't sidelined so early. Maybe more classes, personalities, and improvements in existing classes and personalities. And not restricting enemy types to randomly generated quests (still working on encountering two mid-level quest bosses).

Also, have the popular selection be from both the Switch and 3DS releases, to spice up the variety in randomized Miis you can select if you don't want to make your own.

Definitely agree that the achievements need adjusting. It makes far more sense to spread out those requirements among all your characters rather than insisting that somebody's gotta master them all by themselves.

More classes and personalities would also be nice, especially the latter. And it would be nifty to see some kind of Old Save Bonus, or characters from the first game show up in a potential sequel, even if only as cameos.

It would be nice if party members had a bit more variety to their roles in the story rather than just ringing the doorbell one day.

Maybe have at least some characters in roles similar to the Besmirched Noble's Son or Fab Fairies who are introduced as NPCs first, but eventually join up as permanent party members. Or inversely, party members who join up and then do something significant later; like, say, whoever the fifth party member who joins you is, at some point during the story they abandon the team for a while and join back later (And I don't just mean because of falling rocks or being captured by the Dark Lord, I mean as an actual story development).

Also maybe some boss battles against other Miis in actual Mii form. I was a little disappointed we didn't actually get to fight the Genie in his normal form, just as a face on a monster.
